  • Today we hit the streets of Mexico and ask locals what they think of Americans. In this video, people discuss topics including culture, quality of life, and material possessions. We recorded the video in Guadalajara, Mexico. The aim of these videos is to learn more about people in Spanish-speaking countries, their culture, and to learn Spanish at the same time.

I have a friend from Tijuana who I met in San Diego. He was one of the kindest and one of the most hardworking people I've ever met.
I think most people from Mexico come across as very genuine and accepting.

Guadalajara! I am an American and I stayed there in the heart of the city for a month, and the people were honestly so welcoming, extremely hilarious and are absolute party animals. Some of the most fun-loving and cheerful people I have ever met. I learned Spanish with street smart Spanish because of this trip, and learned so much more during my stay!

These opinions are insightful and honest. As an American in Mexico I am still getting used to how open and welcoming Mexicans are, unlike our culture. The Americans that visit Mexico, except for some that visit beach towns to party, are generally more open and interested in Mexicans and their culture. I have a very high opinion of Mexicans in general and of the culture. Mexicans have managed to retain much of the good things in life that are being lost in the U.S.

As a Chinese-American, I will say Asian-Americans in the USA view Mexicans in a highly positive manner. Both Mexican and Asian peoples are very hard working, honest, sincere, and family-oriented. Both cultures love to eat and are excellent cooks. Tacos, enchiladas, and arepas are the greatest food inventions ever! My Asian friends all love Mexican food.
Most Americans are friendly people and love Mexican food which has become an important staple in the USA's diverse cuisine.

Racism and different opinions will never go away completely, but it's so satisfying and fulfilling to be able to put stereotypes and judgements aside and get to know individuals to form friendships and business relationships or even romantic relationships despite what everyones hatred or judgements that is the norm in our cultures. Always give someone a chance to prove and express that they are one of the good guys. You'll have some of the closest relationships and bonds with people that society tells you not to like or talk to. It's a very beautiful way to fight hate and racism.

I was kinda surprised to hear how highly some people think of us. I wonder if that's just something they see in the media, or if the people they have had the chance to meet were just "well off", in the sense that they can actually afford to travel, and are educated enough to speak another language fluently.
On a side note, a lot of the buildings I'm seeing in the background are gorgeous.

As an American it’s really interesting to see how another culture perceives us! I agree with a lot of their criticisms of American culture, we can be a very self centered country and I know there’s people here that can be very cold to other cultures and perspectives. Of course I think with any country there are people that are kind and accepting of everyone, but I do understand where some people are coming from about us being cold. We should be and could be more welcoming of other cultures, especially Hispanic culture. There’s so many people in Florida where I live that are very against immigration and think that only Americans should live here, but we are a melting pot, and pretty much everyone who lives here has family that has migrated to live here at some point, so I feel like it’s hypocritical to box people out who want equal opportunity. I would be curious to see more videos like this! 🤗

Also an American, I love Mexican food and had some really good friends through school that taught me a lot about their culture, I think alot of people here misunderstand how the United States is we are a multi national country and we are United with different cultures all in one, some Americans can be judgemental probably like anybody in other countries as well, I believe the main issues we have here is we are super strict with immigration causing a lot illegals to come here instead of through the proper system and that bunches alot of old farts panties in a wad and causes them to look at them less than human and that ain't right imo every one is human and should be able to see and experience the USA without trouble regardless if they came here illegally or legally in my eyes we are one and the same.

I would walk around the neighborhood and visit my neighbors. I would eat at their house and they would eat at my grandparents. When I came out as trans I made more friends because there is a big lgbtq community in Mexico. Now that I live in the U.S I nearly know my neighbors. This is a pretty interesting video; I naturally assumed everyone would dislike Americans, particularly after our previous president.
It’s nice to know that isn’t the case. However, with all things, people within America are quite different in terms of cultures they value, most likely due to the vastness of the country and different ways of governing.
I would say, no one’s opinions in this video is wrong, and many in which I agree with. The most we can do as a global society is just appreciate one another’s unique differences and explore and learn from each others experiences as we all have something that adds value to the world.

Thank you!! And I completely agree.
My experience is that everyone is the same, generally speaking. There are different cultures however on the foundational level, we all want the same things.
There are good people and bad people in every culture, but the true test is sitting down with a person and having a conversation over a beer, or tea or a meal.
Only then can you gain an idea of that person.
General opinions about groups of people based on what we see in media is a very very bad way of developing an opinion about groups of people.
      The media lies to us.

I'm glad to see the opinions of (Norte) Americans is so varied. Years ago I took my kids to a city in Mexico on a quest for them to see Afro-Mexicans after I began tracing our ancestors. We were initially treated so badly that I cried. I wondered if we were treated "well" in more touristy parts of Mexico because the industry dictated a mode of behavior?
It wasn't until I began to REALLY interact & speak (not great Spanish) with people that I wasn't shunned & found out about the misconceptions held largely due to the media (or lackthereof).
Sadly, many of the comments about Americans were spot on
Communication is the best bridge to creating friendships

Please don't come to retire in Mexico, we have a lot of elder population coming from the US and they are not being nice with our people. They are complaining about our culture, even some elder couple sued a Mexican restaurant and they want it to close because "the music is bothering them and they came to retire to have a quiet life", but they don't have any right to do that, it's a familiar restaurant with traditional music, but they don't respect our culture, our people. If you come from another country, then you should respect and adapt to the culture. The thing is, many Americans think the world is just them, and that every country must speak English (that's why most of them don't bother to learn other languages) and they think we must attend to their consuming needs. So, please don't retire here, if you won't adapt, if you won't learn Spanish and you won't treat people with respect and dignity.

Im soooooo sorry that I only know some basic spanish. I have inoperable brain cancer and it effects my memory, so despite my efforts, I have not been successful in learning your language. After seeing this video, perhaps I will not come back. I hear the Phillipines are nice. Maybe I will go there. Thanks for allowing me to visit for a few months.

Americans are so broken these days. They only think about the negative parts of Mexico. It's the same with Colombia. They only read about the bad things that happen in Colombia and not the good things. Spanish culture has been really interesting to me for the past four years. You'd be amazed by the things you don't read about. I have nothing positive to say about America though. There is too much violence these days and too much bullying online in the United States.

Americans don’t give a shit about Mexico I hate to break it to you. They talk about the tourist destinations because that’s where they visit and they talk about the border/cartels because it’s a political issue and it affects American lives. There you go.

Coming to the U.S as an older teenager people here won’t help you at all. You could be dying in a sidewalk and most people just pass by.
