- It's a place that would surprise even Sheldon Cooper.
In this video, we venture to Kyoto, a city steeped in Japanese history, to explore its expansive railway museum. The museum is renowned for its vast size and impressive collection, housing a staggering 53 preserved rail vehicles. While the SL Steam Locomotive C62 Type 2 experienced a derailment on January 8, 2024, this footage, captured in April 2023, showcases the lively run of C56 Type 160, radiating vitality.
You can purchase admission tickets online, and for those looking to save a bit, utilizing ticket shops and flea market sites near Kyoto Station is a viable option. Booking the railway simulator through the "Asobi View" website in advance is highly recommended, especially on weekends. The museum boasts a large diorama featuring the Doctor Yellow, an extensive Plarail collection including Thomas, and a review of the on-site cafeteria. Additionally, the video captures the sleek Shinkansen Nozomi and even provides a glimpse of the Twilight Express Mizukaze passing by.
Stay tuned for future videos showcasing the railway museum in Omiya. Don't forget to subscribe to the channel! If you find the video intriguing, please show your support with likes and comments. Your continued support is sincerely appreciated!

No amount of American railroading bias can stop me from loving this.
thank you! I'm planning to go to other railroad museums, so I'd be happy if you were looking forward to it ☺️ I also want to ride a lot of American trains! ! !
As an American, something about Japanese steam locomotives feels so correct. Maybe it’s their whistles and knuckle couplers.
That's right! You're very knowledgeable👍I haven't had a close look at steam locomotives around the world yet, so I'd like to go see one someday! !
That’s what makes Japanese trains stand out to me. The knuckle couplers compared to the chain and hook couplers are like night and day for me. Not to mention how any railfan can agree they like a c62 or a d55 or a c57. (C62’s are my favorite in my opinion)
I'm glad that you like Japanese railways ☺️ I'll be visiting other railway museums as well, so please look forward to it 🚂✨
I would have never thought to be able to touch a real train while standing on carpet. What a time to be alive!
When I visited for the first time, I was impressed and wondered how they were transported! I hope you can come and see it someday 🚃✨
They really are just chilling
@@Choo-ChooTravelI would love to! Often times railway museums are just a grimy old locomotive shed somewhere far off at a local station, with as much old and rusty trains squeezed into as possible. This one looks exceptionally clean and amazingly well put together. Don't get me wrong, I like old locomotive sheds, but this one looks like a place where the whole family could spend an entire day and not get sick of it.
I visited this museum back in April 2023. I'd been to the Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum in 2013, but then hadn't gotten around to getting back to the museum post-expansion. Definitely a great way to spend an afternoon if you're in Kyoto.
That's right. As you can see in the video, it is now a very spacious museum with many beautiful exhibits and a variety of experiences. However, the Umekoji Steam Locomotive depot is still the most impressive of all the museums and it remains in my memory 😊🚂 I hope you can visit again ☺️
@@Choo-ChooTravel It was definitely the highlight of my Kyoto visit last April. I knew it had grown substantially with the expansion, but I was in awe of just how large the museum has become.
I'm glad it was a highlight of Kyoto✨⛩Personally, the Railway Museum was so big that one day wasn't enough😂✨I think I'll go again!
This is genuinely one of the best railway museums I’ve ever seen! There are so many interactive elements, and every display and piece of railway equipment is kept in incredible condition! If I ever get the chance to come to Japan, you can bet I’ll definitely stop by here!
thank you for positive comments! Please come to Japan ☺️ We are also planning to visit other railway museums in Japan, so we hope you are looking forward to it 🚂✨🎥

That's right 😂 There were a lot of kids and they were going crazy 😂✨
wow, I found another reason to visit japan again.
I'm glad to hear that! I hope you have a wonderful trip to Japan someday🙏🚂✨
This museum was fantastic. I like the rooftop terrace where you can watch passing trains go by!
I could have stayed on the rooftop terrace for hours ☺️ There is also a garage for active vehicles, and the view from the top is amazing 🚂
Japan loves it's trains, so it was to be expected. Great museum!
I'm happy to hear that you like Japanese trains ☺️ Please come and visit us when you come to Kyoto 🚂😊
As a fan of Japan, I enjoy the trains in Japan. I also enjoy the various train models at a museum in Japam in this video.
Thank you 😊 I'm planning to go to a model train shop and the Railway Museum in Saitama in the future, so I hope you're looking forward to it 🎥✨
Arigatougozaimasu for brightening my day with your visit to the Kyoto Railway Museum. It's a wonderland of fun and entertainment for children and adults to enjoy. The many steam locomotives on display and the giant model railway were sugoi. I was a surprised to see the steam locomotive train ride. I had not expected that, and I was so glad that it was part of the attractions. I love Japan's train culture and the fact that vintage trains are so well preserved at a place like this museum. I look forward to watching more of your railway adventures! 👍🚂🇯🇵
Thank you very much for your very nice comment 😊 I think this is a heavenly place for those who like Japanese trains. It was a very fulfilling day for me as I was able to learn about the history of trains as well as the history of Japan! Being able to ride a steam locomotive and the grandeur of the depot is something you should definitely experience 😍🚂✨
🙂I hope to be able to visit the museum one day@@Choo-ChooTravel
This museum looks so cool, leagues better than the transport museums we get here in Britain!
Thank you 🚂☺️ I'm very interested in the British Railway Museum! I definitely want to go 🏃♂️✨
@@Choo-ChooTravel As someone who has been to the one in York I highly reccomend it if you are intrested is looking at trains and being in them but it is not as interactive as the ones in Japan!
At least you have a museum. Where I live, kids throw rocks at trains.
The National Railway Museum in York has an original 0-Series bullet train. It had to be transported there because it was too wide for British double track, tunnels and platforms.
You think that’s bad, herein the Deep South you just get a hot shed with 2 steam engines from the 1960’s
What a wonderful and interactive experience! In the UK, we have our National Railway Museum in York. It is a fantastic collection but sadly not nearly as interactive as this. We do, however, have the only 0-series Shinkansen unit outside Japan, which was donated by JR West in 2001. It is so incredible to see it standing beside our British locomotives!
I learned from a comment here that there is a railway museum in York, England! I would love to visit too! The 0 series Shinkansen is actually my favorite train! I'm definitely going to see the British locomotive and the two-shot! ! Thank you for letting me know 😊

Please come and visit Japan! And not only do you enjoy the wonderful Kyoto, but also the Railway Museum 🚂 Kyushu is also full of fascinating trains 🚃✨
Visited this museum in 2019. Fantastic, and highly recommended for even the casual railroad fan...

Visited in 2017. Was absolutely fantastic, probably one of the best I have been too. At the end of the day, the running steam engine does a spin on the turntable.
I’m also happy to hear you say that ☺️

@@Choo-ChooTravel I am excited
Why I wasn't supprised to se Thomas the tank engine 😂 Wish we could have proper museum like this in Croatia 😊
That's right 😂 I'd love to go to a world where Thomas the Tank Engine is actually moving and the tracks are just like the anime ☺️ I think both children and adults will be very excited!
To make their collection complete, they need a Santa Fe GM F-7 unit with a Brill observation car and vista dome from the 1950s. ;-) TY. Nice video. .
I agree! There are many attractive trains in America too! I would also like to visit and ride the train ✨ It would be great if we could create a railway museum that integrates the world 😍

Thank you 😊 It's sad to see historical trains destroyed 😢 There are many railway enthusiasts in Japan, so I'm sure there are many museums like this 😂✨
I visited this museum a few years ago. There's a park outside the museum that has a heritage streetcar that takes you from the park entrance to the museum and even has a small museum itself. I hope it's still there.

I cannot recommend this museum enough, I went towards the end of the day near closing and was able to see them run a steam train, and watched it go down the track and when it came back to the round house spun around on the turntable and blew the whistle and got reloaded with coal.
