    Yes, cabbage rolls my favorite. My maternal grandparents were Ukrainian. They had a large family and just about half of them married outside of the Ukrainian community, especially the younger ones. We would get together for a Christmas Eve party at one of my aunt’s house and enjoy holuptsi. Sometimes shinka and hrin too. It was the only time of the year that I enjoyed Ukrainian food because my mother never learned how to cook it from her mother. She was the second to the youngest. I have fond memories of those get togethers with my mother’s family.

    Ahh! Thank you very much for your kind explanation of the Ukrainian Christmas celebrations. Although I live in the US, my maternal grandfather was Greek and I see you have two similar celebrations. The caroling is similar to the Greek children singing “Kalanda”, Greek Christmas carols. They ring little triangles as they sing.
    Also, Greeks observe Ephipany in a similar way. Men and young men dive for a crucifix in the cold waters. Whoever finds it will have a good year. Thank you! I have been praying for Ukraine for God’s protection and its freedom. Salva Ukraine!!

    Thank you for your explanation of Ukrainian Christmas traditions. I want to try cooking Ukrainian food for my Ukrainian guests. They've converted me to Ukrainian food and I want to surprise them.

    My job on Christmas Eve was to see the first star in the east- there was hay under the table, I think, and an extra place set--my grandfather would read from the bible befote the meal--how lucky I am to have these memories. Thanks for posting this Christmas lesson.

    My great grandparents immigrated to Canada from Franko Ivano region. My family has always celebrated Ukrainian style Christmas. That is the only way I know. Right now my family and I are confused about the change to Dec. 25th. We want to continue with Jan. 7th.
    Something new that you taught me is how to say Merry Christmas. I've never heard anyone in Canada saying that.
    Thanks for the great educational video.
    Stay safe!! May God bless you, your family, your friends and the military.

    I look forward to the 12 dishes this year. I’ve celebrated Ukrainian Christmas in the past in a previous relationship and love many of the dishes. Now I have a wonderful Ukrainian girlfriend and I look forward to us sharing our traditions together over this holiday season. Even though I still know very very little about the language, one day I hope to. Thank you for your video, best wishes and merry Christmas to you and your family. 🇨🇦🇺🇦🫶

    TY for the video. Hmmm. How about Tree-toppers for Xmas trees? It can be an ornament of many shapes, but is often a large five-pointed star.

    • @LearnUkrainianwithVakulenko
      @LearnUkrainianwithVakulenko  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, very popular ornaments in Ukraine are: five-pointed star (as a biblical symbol of Bethlehem star), pickaxe tip, big bow, Christmas tree top "angel" or "Santa Claus cap" etc.

    Thanks for the video, it's the first I watch on your channel and I've already subscribed! I like your teaching style. I've been learning Ukrainian since April 2022 but I haven't got very far yet... it helps that I'm English-Italian bilingual - it doesn't help that I'm not very organised 😂
    I don't celebrate any religious holidays, but the one thing I remember fondly from my catholic childhood is the day of the epiphany of the 6th January, when children get a stocking full of small gifts from an old hag called Befana (she looks a lot like Baba Yaga, and will bring you charcoal if you've been naughty). I also remember that one of my grandmothers would fill a big hamper with fruit, nuts, and her own baking and preserves 🥰 we would slowly get through it over the holiday period then return it so she could use it again.
    I'm very impressed with Ukrainians for observing 40 days of fasting before christmas as well as easter! As a vegan, that gives me two windows for visiting Ukraine and actually finding something to eat 😂Will Ukrainians start counting backwards from 25th December from now on, and will fasting follow the traditional dates?

    • @LearnUkrainianwithVakulenko
      @LearnUkrainianwithVakulenko  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment! I didn't know about an old hag Befana:)
      Ukrainians usually don't count backwards from 25th December.
      Fasting goes from November 15th to December 24th.

    Do you have someone like Santa or Grandfather Frost, Ded Moroz, or is that russification & not of Ukraine? My maternal grandmother's parents were from outside Kyiv. I've had cabbage rolls. Mom loved them. I love potato & onion varenyky better, poppyseed roll or cake, & fried cabbage or big cabbage slices rubbed with oil & roasted in the oven with onions, and my grandma would make mushrooms and baked noodles with cottage cheese and baked fish. She liked to use herbs like marjoram & thyme, too. Her food was always special. She always fed the birds too. And we always went carolling. Our whole neighborhood went, in New York. She told me about Grandfather Frost but I don't know the origins & I know her parents left because of Russian oppression & violence. I have a star like that, as a lamp, and a Santa hat at the top of my tree. I put a bow on top of another I decorated at a local community hall and I didn't know this is done in Ukraine but my grandmother's cousin always did this too, so I got it from her ways. They both made traditional rag dolls, and embroidered felt ornaments I still make too, with patterns like on the blouses or hearts and flowers. Thank you so much for the information! I wish you, and all Ukraine peace and safety and freedom, forever. Merry Christmas to you! Slava Ukraini!
