- Weird Bed &/Or Yes Please is a very weird song that I've wanted an excuse to briefly talk about a while, it's just unfortunate that the excuse has ended up being the Joe Hawley accusations/drama/controversy.
Nevertheless, I wanted to just focus on the lyrics of this song as it was written at the time. I do not think there is any connection between this song and what has come to light recently.
But yeah, this is just a short video of my interpretations of Weird Bed &/Or Yes Please. Hope you like em

“velveteen” also means a fabric that feels like velvet, but isn’t. so maybe she isn’t actually a teenager, but still inexperienced. it’s also important to consider that although joe is like 40 now, we shouldn’t immediately assume that he’s writing this from his present self, and that maybe this is a song about when he was younger

I think “I am only velveteen” could be a reference to the story of the Velveteen Rabbit, about a stuffed toy rabbit (made of velveteen) who wants to be real. He’s mentioned the story before in social media posts, though how this connects with the rest of the song I’m not too sure. But since it’s a Joe Hawley song, anything is possible.

I think this is exactly right. Joe is fond of literary references, and the idea of a creature that wants to be real tracks with his general existential tendencies.

Have to disagree; cause I low key don’t think this is talking about age at all, I high key think the lady in the song is just… kinky? If that makes sense? Like she says “I am only velveteen” in a way to say “I am soft and fragile” and she said it with a flare, in a way to insinuate that shed want the character we are playing as, (or Joe is singing as, or Joe, or whoever,) to do something with that knowledge, especially followed up by the lines “fear not any pain for which I am unprepared” which sounds like she is saying she has a pain kink 😭 idk, the rest of the song just sound like… kinky stuff, and so that’s why I’m like “ah that explains a lot now.” Also one May describe a women as velveteen cause her skin may be soft
I did think of that, but to me what I said just seemed to make more sense. There are loads of lines that can be interpreted in loads of different ways, so chances are you could be right.

I know this comment is really late, but i only just saw this video and wanted to share my opinions, at least onthe sexual aspects of it. I always thought that, because velveteen is a type of fancy, soft fabric, the lady inthe song was refering to herself in that sense; that her body is great and she is bragging about it. And that 'fear not any pain to which i am unprepared' is more about how the man in the song, Joe, can be rough with her without the fear of her getting hurt, which in my mind ties in with the references to rabbits. As for the 'old childlike empress' i had assumed its more to do with her energy and playful nature. But hey, thats just a theory, a TH theory.

I always interpreted it as the partner being 17 since the syllables match up more than with any other -teen number
I don’t think we should ignore what he’s done but instead acknowledge it and continue to enjoy his music without supporting him as a person, I’ve seen the sentiment of just ignoring the drama with a lot of TH fans and that really rubs me the wrong way

Overall yes it’s a weird song especially when paired with what’s he’s done

I'm not the type of person that actively engages within the Tally Hall fandom/community so I'm not quite educated on the amount of documentaries that are published like this-,, but I really enjoyed watching some sort of a.. disambiguation on smth you can't find real often on the internet in (an especially QUICK) youtube-vid format.. not to mention how you got straight into the point! please keep up this high-quality style of content!!

I always assumed this part was a reference to roleplay, and she was pretending to be something that she isn't. In this case, she was pretending to be unexperienced and young, and the next line kind of confirms this: "fear not any pain for which i am unprepared".

One thing I noticed too is in the single's cover (or whatever it's called idk) on the borders there's an illustration of two skeletons in a bed, but they're exactly the same height, so I do think that the two characters in the songs are roughly the same age/are both adults.

I don't believe this is any kind of "foreshadowing" or whatever. It is simply about roleplay. "Velveteen" is a cloth that's like velvet but not velvet.
