50 years ago today, the Wailers gifted this masterpiece to all of us. To Peter, Bunny, and Bob, as well as Earl “Wire” Lindo and the Barrett brothers: Thank you for all that you gave to the world! ❤️💛💚🖤
It boggles my mind that a 27 year old Bob Marley came up with this - I do know the instrumentals are not his playing, but the lyrics, the beat and rythmn - I do rank this as the best of the Wailers' tunes and even my favourite Marley tune. The bass at the end is incredible!
I just saw the Bob Marley movie it was just a beautiful movie!! I heard stuff I’ve never heard before but yeah my favorite Marley songs are Could You Be Loved, Three Little Birds and Buffalo Soldier!!
Love this song. I saw and heard Jimmy Cliff sing this at Randalls Island n Manhattan. in early 1979s for Saviors Day ! We traveled from Manhattan to the island via an Aerial Tramway. Amazing experience 🔥🙏🏾
[22 November 2022] Perfect. Perfectly rockin', and more to the point, perfectly *scarifying* ; with the most brilliantly queasy, faintly off-kilter falsetto harmony backing vocals from Bunny Wailer (and possibly - astoundingly - from Peter Tosh, too).
I shot the sheriff But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no, oh I shot the sheriff But I didn't shoot no deputy, ooh, ooh, ooh Yeah! All around in my home town They're tryin' to track me down, yeah They say they want to bring me in guilty For the killing of a deputy For the life of a deputy but I say Oh, now, now, oh I shot the sheriff (But I swear it was in self-defence) oh no, oh, oh, ooh Yeah, I say, I shot the sheriff oh, Lord (and they say it is a capital offence) Yeah, yeah! Hear that Sheriff John Brown always hated me For what, I don't know Every time I plant a seed He said kill it before it grow He said kill them before they grow, and so-and-so Read it in the news! oh, Lord! But I swear it was in self-defence Where was the deputy? (Ooh, ooh, ooh) I say, I shot the sheriff But I swear it was in self-defence, yeah! (Ooh) Freedom came my way one day And I started out of town, yeah All of a sudden I saw Sheriff John Brown aiming to shoot me down So, I shot, I shot, I shot him down and I say If I am guilty I will pay (pay, pay, pay, pay...) but I say but I didn't shoot no deputy I didn't shoot no deputy, no (ooh, ooh, ooh) (I shot the sheriff) I agree (But I didn't shoot no deputy) oh (Ooh, ooh, ooh) Reflexes had got the better of me And what is to be must be Every day the bucket a-go a-well One day the bottom a-go drop out One day the bottom a-go drop out I say I, I, I, I shot the sheriff Lord, I didn't shot the deputy, no I, I (shot the sheriff) But I didn't shoot no deputy yeah So, yeah
Jesus Christ loves you no matter what he died for you on the cross accept Jesus Christ as you’re lord and savior and you will enter Gods kingdom and be saved from you’re sins ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit and you will be filled
I’m so used to the live versions with that heavier sound and the beautiful harmonies of the I-threes. Revisiting the album version is somewhat strange but I still quite like it
[Chorus] I shot the sheriff But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no, oh I shot the sheriff But I didn't shoot no deputy, ooh, ooh, ooh [Verse 1] Yeah, all around in my home town They're trying to track me down, yeah They say they want to bring me in guilty For the killing of a deputy For the life of a deputy But I say Oh, now, now, oh [Chorus] I shot the sheriff, the sheriff But I swear it was in self-defense, oh no Ooh, ooh, ooh, yeah I say, I shot the sherriff, oh Lord And they say it is a capital offense, yeah Ooh, ooh, ooh, yeah [Verse 2] Sheriff John Brown always hated me For what, I don't know Every time I plant a seed He said kill it before it grow He said kill them before they grow And so, and so Read it in the news [Chorus] I shot the sheriff, oh Lord But I swear it was in self-defense Where was the deputy? Ooh, ooh, ooh I say, I shot the sheriff But I swear it was in self-defense, yeah Ooh-ooh [Verse 3] Freedom came my way one day And I started out of town, yeah All of a sudden I saw Sheriff John Brown Aiming to shoot me down So I shot, I shot, I shot him down and I say If I am guilty I will pay (pay, pay, pay, pay, pay) [Chorus] I shot the sheriff But I say, but I didn't shoot no deputy I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no, ooh, ooh, ooh I shot the sheriff, I did But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh Ooh, ooh, ooh [Verse 4] Reflexes had the better of me And what is to be must be Every day the bucket a-go a well One day the bottom a-go drop out One day the bottom a-go drop out [Outro] I say I-I-I, I shot the sheriff Lord, I didn't shot the deputy, no Yeah, I-I shot the sheriff But I didn't shoot no deputy, yeah, so, yeah
So really, anyone ever find out who shot the Deputy? Did the Sheriff do it, and then try to pin it on Bob, and that's why he was Aim'in to Shoot him Down? Thus causing the "self-defense" rational for Bob? Could someone ask AI to come up with a Part 2 of this song which explains what led up to this, and what happened after, and also include a relatable "life lesson" in the chorus?

50 years ago today, the Wailers gifted this masterpiece to all of us.
To Peter, Bunny, and Bob, as well as Earl “Wire” Lindo and the Barrett brothers: Thank you for all that you gave to the world!
❤️💛💚🖤
Bob Marley and the Wailers did excellent on this song. Way better than Eric Clapton. Nobody can beat the original. Takes me back to my Jamaican roots.
When the song was released it was just "The Wailers" Peter and Bunny hadn't left yet.
Thanks for sharing this valuable information. 💖💖💖🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
screamin jay hawkins nailed it aswell nearly as good as Marley alot better then Clapton
Jesus Christ loves you no matter what ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit and you will be filled
Accept Jesus as you’re lord and savior and you will enter Gods kingdom of heaven pray it and believe it deep in you’re heart
It boggles my mind that a 27 year old Bob Marley came up with this - I do know the instrumentals are not his playing, but the lyrics, the beat and rythmn - I do rank this as the best of the Wailers' tunes and even my favourite Marley tune. The bass at the end is incredible!
Swear the end is my fav and when he say it im guilty I will pay but the bass at the end immaculate
Why does it boggle your mind? Have you never heard the works of a 25-year-old named Hendrix? 🤷🏻♂️
@@scottmisus4678love me some Hendrix, but every single Bob song is incredible. He’s one of the greatest musicians EVER
The Bob Marley biopic movie brought me here. And I'm loving it
Same here.
Thinking critically about the lyrics heard in public brought me here.
Wassup biopic
I’m only 24 and I grew up on this song I 1st heard it when I was like 5 or 6
Bob Marley will not be forgotten he made his music change the dark side of the world rest in peace bob Marley
That Bassline at the end does something to a Brother...it's mean Jack!🤜🏽🤛🏽
brother im a cracker and me too
Ashton "family man" Barrett's sublime bassline rocks, so awesome, it turns an already great tune into a masterpiece
How about Carlton Barretts amazing percussions
Greatest bass player 🙌
Why is this son so good bro

Jesus Christ loves you no matter what he died on the cross for you
AskGod to fill you with the Holy Spirit and you will be filled
I shot the sheriff was a song addressing police brutality and police misconduct
And racism. When he says “always hated me. For what, I don’t know.” He is of course making the audience guess that this is a racial thing
Mostly racism, and genocide.
Every time I plant a seed , he said “kill it before it grows , he said kill them before they grow”
To me, the meanings Express themselves more symbolically, it's taking authority into your own hands as the sheriff was clearly in violation
Love this song. I saw and heard Jimmy Cliff sing this at Randalls Island n Manhattan. in early 1979s for Saviors Day ! We traveled from Manhattan to the island via an Aerial Tramway. Amazing experience 🔥🙏🏾
Awwww omg love this amazing creations of uncle Bob respect kicking here in 2024 love to you all.

Bob said, what is to be must be. And he is right. Everything happens for a reason. If its your time, its your time.
Some time you can make it some one else's time, hope not.

Aiming to shoot me down
So I shot, I shot, I shot him down and I say

I shot the sheriff
But I say, but I didn't shoot no deputy
I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no, ooh, ooh, ooh
I shot the sheriff, I did
But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh

Very great song from 51 years ago
That is an awesome song! Understamd it across divisional lines . The poor are the opressed. It aint about color or country or religion!
I NEVER DRAINED ANY SWAMP BUT I STILL LOVE THIS JAM
We all can relate to Bob Marley and distinctive sounds of his Rhythmic Music..
🔥 🔥 😍
🎉😊😊kippin warnig 😮
Whats up with everyone commenting the same thing? lol I dig the Clapton version too but BOB brought me here!
Bots
Bob Marley he's the greatest singer in the universe, guaranteed✔.
I’m 24 and I was 5 when I 1st head this masterpiece 🔥🥲
High for my self
All around in my hometown
Theyre trying to track me down
They say they want to bring me in guilty
Eric Clapton is a top 10, maybe top 5 guitarist ever to me. But he didn’t even come close to matching this version, let’s be real.
Jamaica Love ❤🇯🇲🇲
Greetings from Sicily 🇮🇹
Greetings
Jamaican Outlaw at the Old West
When I had the LP, I used to put the stylus back to hear that last riff repeatedly (from 3.42)
Of course,Eric Clapton made this world famous-You gotta love the original version by the late great Bob Marley.
It’s Bob’s song to be true, but Eric did an awesome job in his own style. Same song but completely different styles….
The parts that really get my attention:
1:42
From 2:32 to 2:38
So really, anyone ever find out who shot the Deputy?
Did the Sheriff do it, and then try to pin it on Bob, and that's why he was Aim'in to Shoot him Down?
Thus causing the "self-defense" rational for Bob?
Could someone ask AI to come up with a Part 2 of this song which explains what led up to this, and what happened after, and also include a relatable "life lesson" in the chorus?
Hook is great
I agree..
2024 am still here❤❤❤

Crucial, who feels it knows it
Great song
Bob wrote this song, Eric Clapton just copied it so it has to be better by the Master himself after all Bob was the best and still is.❤️🤩

Ils disent qu’ils veulent me rendre coupable
D’avoir tué un agent
D’avoir pris la vie à un agent
Mais je dis que j’ai descendu le sheriff
Mais je vous jure que c’était de la légitime défense !
J’ai descendu le sheriff
Et ils disent que c’est passible de la peine capitale
Sheriff John Brown m’a toujours haï,
Qui s’apprêtait à me tirer dessus
