IU is a very special talent. She started auditioning when she was 13 and was rejected 20 times before a small company signed her. She trained for only about 10 months before making her debut at the age of 15. Compare that to Blackpink who trained for 10 years on average and even BTS trained for 7 years on average, now granted some of that time was finding all the right pieces. They planned on putting IU in a group but quickly realized that her voice was so unique and good that she woukd dominate a group so why bother.
She took control over her music in 2014 when she started recording more of her own songs both lyrics and composing.
The first song she received sole writing credit was Hold My Hand which she wrote for the Kdrama The Greatest Love in 2011. After she released her 2019 performance of Hold My Hand at her Love Poem concert the song went to the top 10 for the
2nd time, 8 years apart.
Many of her performances from the Love Poem concert are available on TH-cam. Those released by her channel are not blocked.
She performed for the first time in 3 years last Sept. Becoming the 1st Korean female artist to headline a concert their. All 90,000 tickets sold out in 30 minutes with 450,000 still waiting in the queue. 2 performance from that concert are available. The opening song Eight and the final song of the offical Concert. Both are must watch.
One last thing which sums it up about her talent. Rolling Stone has added her to their list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.
Thank you, yea she is amazing at what she does. Listening to her for so long but never really realizing who she actually is makes me a bit sad now. But its never too late and I appreciate her now even more because she somehow stuck to me through the music without me knowing her. That is a sign of good art...

Thank you. Yes she has a very natural way of singing. You can hear that she started to sing in a time where you actually had to rely on your singing and not looks, dancing, entertainment and social media presence.... Singing was maybe 80% back then and 20 the rest... now it is like 25/25/25/25 for each segment

I tried to check the countries, but couldn't find complete list. Hope China is included (I'm from Finland) because she can get so many movie goers from there. BTW got my bluray yesterday, so I'm covered.

For the rap part of Coin, initially IU wanted to collab with rapper CL, but CL was on a hectic schedule herself. Thus IU execute the whole song on her own.

Dear Pierre, I know I.U. for her acting skills and I really appreciate her in the kdrama "Moonlovers". I'm sorry to say (since you adore her) that I don't like her voice so much as you. I think it's because she uses to much falsetto. Moreover in her higher notes her the voice loose consistency. About her vocal technique I must say that her vocal coach didn't teach her the right mode to breathe when she is singing, infact she always take breath with her mouth between one phrase and the following phrase (I'm sure that your very fine ears can detect this breathing) and I personally find it annoying. This way of breathing is also very dangerous for the vocal chords, because the air input directly by the mouth has the effect to dry the higher part of the throat and the vocal chords. Personally, I'm not in her type of music, I find it very childish. But this is only my taste: I definitively like her when she's acting and I agree with you that she is a beautiful woman (who has to struggle with her early years).
Thank you for your insight. I actually don't really care about level of skill or technique in a singer. I want the voice to touch me. And exactly the loss of consistency in her voice here and there and the fragileness get closer to me then if it was perfect. But that is just me. For example in male voices I love to listen to Kurt Cobain even though he was one of the worst technical and unskilled vocalists out there. His voice cracked, he sang out of tune and out of time, but he "moved" me and "felt authentic" ... on the other hand I cannot listen to the critically acclaimed Dimash who - as many say - has a perfectly trained and tuned voice... he does not get close to me in any way.... I see his skills and definitely respect them, but don't feel him. Taeyeon for example - she has great technique and skill - but I also "feel" her because while singing she forgets all of that and just sings from the heart. Whereas a Beyonce - for me - is just showing off her skill without soul - I just can't connect.... So in the end its all about preference and - for me - how the voice touches my emotions more than my ears.
