I have that same amp that you did your magic to. Question, I think you said that the power wasn't the problem with the tubes going bad fast. I tune my amp just like this and it gets about 1k or a but more out of it at 95w drive. Is it okay to run it at 1k output if its tuned correctly? Or should I drop the drive down and run the amp tuned properly at say 800w output? Thanks.
I am totally confused I was always under the impression that tuning to max output at 80 in then backing down the drive was the way to go. This is what is in my manual. I tried tuning with 165-175 grid current at 100 in but only am getting about 700 out as opposed to 1000 out at about 100-125 grid. So do I tune to max output at 100 in or 165-175 grid and 600-700 out I am using a pulser and it is difficult to read meters as they jump around. I am not able to adjust the pulser to smooth the needles out I do not have a TOF
You cannot use grid current to tune with a pulser without something like a TOF. The normal grid meter reads something around average. Peak is what is useful for any mode but steady carrier. Normal grid current for maximum output, once anywhere near full power, is about 40-50mA per tube.
Thanks for the nice video, I have an AL811 and hooked up with an ARB-704 between the rig and the linear, btw what is a pulser tuning device? And how much watts input to get a grid of 160-175ma on AL-811? Thank you and 73 de KH2ZZ
K10IK, look at the left edge of the Grid Current meter. There is a red flash in that area. Trust me I know. I hand delivered my AL-811H to Toms location and had him do all his up grades to my old amp. I saw this thing put out 1,200+ watts. This is his design, he knows how to run these things. Don’t be such a knucklehead dude.
Wow! I have an 811H and would love to have it set up this way to make tuning so much easier!
In lieu of a tuning pulser can I set my ic 7300 wpm to 48 and let the dits rip on cw?
Can you tell me what the value of L7.It is bad the schematic and parts list does not tell you anything about L7

whats next best if you dont have a tuning pulser
Hi Tom, so I tune at max high power from the exciter? Then after I have tuned the amp I reduce the exciter to 60 or 65 watts? Is that what I am to do?
I was looking at one of those pulsers from Ameritron what do you think of those?

Whoa! I keep my grid current under 100 (tuning with rtty). I guess I am way off base.
I see nothing blinking red. I am surprised in your, "tuning" at length you didn't melt the tubes.
Burt this man designed the amplifier.
