Although I agree with the underage and mildly annoying children, I'd rather not ship my ID somewhere over the internet. I feel like VRchat will have many users that agree with this statement about the underage problem. As well as the ID problem. While talking with friends about this problem even back in the early days of VRchat, I noticed I have a soft spot for security of my own wellbeing. With that being said. Most of my friends as well as myself, will not be sending an ID over the internet. Instead we will either play normally. Or find a different VR social game to play. Being asked for my birthday and name in games we join is already enough. As my online "persona" doesn't stick to my IRL persona. Those are kept separate for many reasons. There's been multiple breaches of this company you plan to use. Just in the past few years there has been breach list released on multiple websites and sources. This is the reason i personally disagree with this. When a user decides a different user is underage, breaking rules, or is just rude and they report it. The user is never looked at or even cared about from the VRchat moderation team. Many times even people on my "friends" have been reported and still play VRchat. On the same account, with no warnings. I have been playing before "release" and still see the same issues. I have reported people that I know STILL play the game on the same account even 5 years later at this point. This won't fix our problem, It is just asking people to sell more of their data. Think about what you are doing here.
Here's an idea that may make things easier for you guys at vrchat. Before we take a photo of our drivers license, we could take a dry erase marker and hide our address or any info you do not require. This way only our photo, & birthday is exposed, making less work for you, and more trust.
As of the time I'm typing this, the FAQ contradicts itself. In "Can I request the deletion of my data?" you say we can request Persona to delete our ID with no affect to verification, but in the December 3rd update you say that ID will need to stay on file. Between big blunders like this and the shady past of Persona's parent company I'm having a hard time putting faith in this system.

After reading a bit on Persona's privacy policy, it looks like you, as the controller of our data, will have the ability to remove all our personal data from Persona's database immediately after you see our date of birth, after a successful verification. You also don't need to retain the DOB after confirming that we're above 18. Is this what you're actually planning to do? If that's not the case: How long do you plan to retain it for, as you have the ability to set the timer for automatic deletion? It seems you will also be handling our requests to remove personal information, can you clarify if that can easily be done immediately after verification, or within a reasonably very short time, and no data will be kept by both you and Persona, and your/their partners? This is important as many people are unwilling to risk having another company keep all their personal information even for a few days, and upon request this information also can be accessed by you, including names, photos, videos, addresses and identification numbers, as shown by the API and privacy policy, for example the DOB isn't shown "by default", but you want to see it and you can. Please clarify on what exactly happens to our information, what you will do and we will be able to do, to protect it.
What they say and what's in the TOS are two completely different things, you shouldn't trust VRChat to not only collect all that information but sell it also, like they said in the video. It cost them money too.

A Question that should be answered above all else. VRC is a gobal game, Persona is not a gobal verification system. What are we going to do for the people who want to opt into this system but can not due to Persona's lack of total gobal coverage? Are we going to just accept that these regions of the world will have to just be a willing sacifice?
I am an Iranian player, I never harmed anyone or any country but my government does that, throwing me out like a piece of garbage and destroying my friendship is the most evil thing you can do to stop another type of evil There should be clearly a better way, I hear about Australian people who cannot verify with persona because oh guess what it's not a human who verifies, its a dumb bot that most of the time is broken.....
This is probably why they said they are talking to multiple verification organizations and also, doing like a closed beta of the ID verification system. Best to do a trial run before purchasing access to multiple platforms for verification in all countries.
Yes just becouse vr chat is not saving anything who tells me that persona is not selling it before deleating or thst they wobt get hacked in the time its on there
One thing, if they only need your DoB, you can obscure any other sensitive information on your ID by taping it off or editing it black digitally and then upload that which only shows your DoB, there is no need for them to see all your personal info, if they don't accept it that way than that is suspicious and not according to the EU's GDPR.
Persona checks all of your personal information against a database to ensure you're not submitting fraudulent information, so no you can not just block out parts of your ID. Also, they retain your name as well because they are only allowing an ID to verify one account, so if you have alts they will not be able to be verified.
@heavyweaponsguy6284 are you referring to the age verification in general or the blacking out of non essential information on one's id? The only people I see having an issue with this is either those with security concerns (which is valid) or minors and in that case they can just shut up and grow up. When an instance is labeled adult only then it means adult only
probably the best way to have done this it doesn’t instantly cut out the kids who actually do have a friend group in vrchat to suddenly not be able to access vrc but it’s just a way to filter them out and that’s all it needs to be
Not a single world will be verification free and you know this. What this does is lock out parts of the player base who are of age and do not wish to DOXX THEMSELVES
Agreed, i have never even touched the app but i've heard a lot about it because of just liking vr in general, and this solution sounds perfect. Though avatars may also do with age locking features too.
afaik it costs vrchat money to do this, and also, they want to catch as many bugs as possible before releasing it to everyone. I'm fine with waiting for that

Persona is not based in the EU. They are based in San Francisco. They are not subject to GDPR, but they say they are GDPR compliant. The fact that you get this wrong is quite worrying. On top of this I feel like, especially for the EU, using eID would be much preferable to this. eID is widely available and much more secure than this.

As a heads up: we mention in the video that Persona is based in the EU -- they are based in the US. However, they are *still* required to follow the GDPR, so that part is correct. blame tupper ok
Please let all VRC+ users access age verification first. You mentioned there is monetary cost to providing the service and VRC+ users are providing funding for this service, indirectly!
Should pin this in the case there might be comments "but Persona is in US" to have an easier reach to clear up any misunderstanding that might come along.
one can only imagine the amount of friend groups which will break apart over this now because people lied about their age. not saying this as a complaint, of course. it's just something i've already seen happen, people lying about their age and then tearing apart an entire community, literally. once again, this VRChat feature wouldn't be to blame, it would only be the trigger.
The people lying about their age can just keep their badge hidden, they're not going to get exposed. In fact, having the blue badge be an option for adults actually makes it easier for predators to lie about being minors.
At least they made it optional because despite being of age there is no dam way I'm going to be giving such case sensitive stuff away so willy nillie, I know no one cares that much about privacy anymore tho I ain't one of those so kudo to make it an optional thing.
optional doesnt mean nothing is gonna affect you if you dont if you want big tiddy avis now you're gonna have to send ur personal information to a company which no one should trust just to be able to give a random dude a boobjob. so yea, it isnt gonna be optional in the long run if you're wanting to do actual adult activities on the platform

I think another thing is adding a visual indicator that is toggleably on a user's name plate that allows the user to put their verification status on the nameplate, whether age verified, or 18 plus verified, cause not all people take the time to look at profiles in detail like that, just a thought

I guess my biggest questions are: 1) You mention it impacting content filters in the future, would this mean unverified/underage accounts could be prohibited from using certain avatars or accessing certain worlds? 2) What is VRChat's plan to combat false positives, like a kid stealing their parents' ID or using an adult's account? 3) Given the enormous amount of content already on the platform, what's the plan to handle things from before content filtering?
2) Persona does a live verification using your computer or cellphone camera via a webpage, requiring a look at a live face and validating it against the pictures on the front and back of your ID. I use it in the financial industry all the time, and its very good at what it does. But it does have issues with glasses and exceptionally large beards.
@@BadHaddy What if a kid uses the account of an verified adult later on? Whatever vrc does, there will always be ways around for some kids. My biggest concern is what happens to all the adult people who do not wish to verify using Persona, will they be left out/blocked from certain worlds and instances? Will there be alternate ways to verify without giving too much personal information? I will wait it out and see what happens.
@@erlnite Then there would be a report of account sharing by users that catch them. At that point, the bad actors are of the parents who would be banned for breaking the rules once the user report is made. This update seems to be a case of limiting bad actors, not those smart enough to use their bad parenting parents to get around online security protocols. At that point, you are questioning why you don't have a Big Brother system.
@@BadHaddy One of the high downsides is pulling up a picture of an ID, along with a cropped photo of the face directly from the ID, therefore bypassing the face verification aspect and age verification all together. So unless the verification system is genuinely great and magnificient at what it does, who knows we might still have to hear brainrot in group instances :P
damn this is exactly what I was afraid of - my country is not supported by Persona, I will be locked out of adult spaces eventually, and I will not even be able to wear my avatars and see other people in adult avatars - effectively destroying the game for me

Nothing screams trustworthy ID verification like a US-based company skating by on shaky legal frameworks cobbled together thanks to some political maneuvering between the EU Commission and the US. The Court of Justice of the European Union has already *retroactively* torched all prior frameworks, and the current framework is a re-brand of the last failed attempt. Persona's data protection officer is also conveniently based in Ireland. The country whose data protection agency is notorious for dragging its feet on cases, interpreting the GDPR in ways that businesses love (even when the European Data Protection Board strongly disagrees), and wrapping everything in gag orders to avoid accountability. It's not like Ireland has a reputation for being the weakest link in GDPR enforcement or anything. If that doesn't fill you with confidence about how your sensitive data will be handled, I don't know what will. No worries about US agencies being able to request your data without notice because the US company is so committed to breaking US surveillance laws for GDPR compliance.
Not to mention that persona does not support certain Middle Eastern countries essentially locking people out of adult groups, and the fact that nobody is obligated to keep any of your data secure because the database leak will happen eventually even if for a small amount of people...
I mean, SSI info was leaked not even 2 years ago. At this rate, nothing is private and if thos means I don't have to interact with literal children, ima do it.
Lol, ssi was hacked and that's under government server supervision and they still got it. So nothing is safe of you think about it. There is always a back door.
These companies are completely untrustworthy. I know age verification is an issue but the way to do it is not to give some shit company all your personal info.

I've heard reports on Personas partners (take Paravision for example) that have been found using user ids from Persona for use in training AI. While Persona is GDPR compliant, Paravision is not. Can VChat promise that if we use Persona, that our data will not leave Persona and VRChat,and will be fully deleted once age is confirmed. I don't feel secure knowing this I a risk. I'd rather VRchat find an actual EU based, GDPR compliant company that will follow through with the ge verification and have our data scrubbed. Either that or the VRChat team do it themselves.
You're searching for certainty in a place where it just doesn't exist. Unless you're planning to raid Persona's offices and do a full audit yourself, you'll never know for sure if they (or maybe someone already inside their systems, or a government agency) are holding onto your information.

I'd like to hear more about the decision to specifically partner with Persona for age verification. Surely theres dozens of age verification services out there. What were the main reasons to chose Persona and what research and steps have you made to ensure that you are not putting player's personal information at risk with this partnership? Are there any systems in place preventing any leaked data from Persona being correlated to individual accounts in VRC? Is any data kept on Persona's server, or after the verification, is it simply your date of birth being saved with your VRC account and that's it? I'm sure VRC has some negotiation power in this partnership to determine what data gets kept and what doesn't by default. To be clear, I'm 1000% for age verification in VRC. I'm certain in the long run that this will significantly benefit the community. I'm just concerned about user's data privacy and any potential reputation damages that might happen to VRC if something would happen to Persona's data. Personally, its not about IF a company has a data breach, its about WHEN and doing a calculated risk as to whether share that personal data or not. The internet never forgets.
Apparently, Roblox (and a few other platforms) already uses Persona, so I searched for their FAQ since guidelines should be the same. Persona keeps the picture you take 90 days, so you may need to re-verify every few months unless VRchat/Roblox/ decides a single time is enough on their side. Which would mean it stays verified long after any data is gone IF that's how they go for it and not asking every 90 days. The platform can also ask to re-verify "on accessing restricted goods" and "on transaction" according to Persona feature list on their website, so... Depending on how it's implemented, the verification can either go: "One time verification, no long term data kept past the first 90 days" (which would be equivalent to when you link the account to Meta/Steam) OR... "Verify every 90 days + On creator-economy transaction + On joining a restricted instance/world + On applying for a restricted group + On switching to a restricted avatar" (which could become old real fast... xD) (As always, take what I say with a grain of salt and search for sources yourself)
@@renookami4651 To add to this, and to avoid some concerns from OP, it's very likely VRC just throws you to a link and expects a callback from it with your birthdate. That's the only information VRC would get from this, and Persona likely has no idea who you are in terms of VRC username and such.

I dont exactly trust anybody or any company to view or hang onto my personal information like that. There has been companies that specialize in verifying IDs that have been breached in the past. "Just don't do it, it's optional" Works until friends or most groups move to verified instances which makes you get left out unless you cave in yourself
roblox has used this services for years now and theyve been great, personally i trust it. At the end of the day it's better than nothing, and completely optional.

These are pretty unfounded concerns. The best case scenario is they teamed up with someone in the EU as they have absolutely mind-bogglingly high consequences for breeches. And they did persona is even used by multi-billion-dollar companies like Roblox. None of liability for a VR chat data breach now. If you are going to have age verification then you are going to have to store the data. It's really that simple. This will put the age verification in the same category as only fans and fansly. The concern is unfounded and not valid because for sure if you have a bank account you're storing data behind encryption as well.

Faking your age likely won't be that easy. I expect the age verification process to also require access to your camera to double check you are not using someone else's ID, on top of a manual final up check. That's how these verification systems usually work.@@dogge521
I've quickly gone through the privacy policy of Persona, and it clearly states that they uphold their rights to share our personal data with third parties they are in a business relationship with. I already know people will say they need to say that to be able to share, in this case, our date of birth with VRChat, but I *reeeally* dont like the open-endedness of the above statement. I do not trust these random websites that I've never heard of before to send them actual photos of my ID.
It's a trusted third party based in the EU. We have very powerful privacy laws over here. Any pictures will be stored for 90 days max. Any breach of GDPR (the laws on how to handle privat information) will nuke them from orbit

While I'm very on the side of age verification, data privacy is also a huge part of it for me. Even though I'd like to verify myself and that others are verified, I do not like the idea of sharing personal information past my age, as persona sometimes asks for (not a concern on you taking it). They also sometimes charge for this, and I am not the biggest fan of the idea of paying someone to take my identifiers. Again, I am completely for this change, but I personally will wait and see how it goes. These changes can often go badly, I've seen it before with other games, and with things in real life such as stores containing adult contents. For now, I am not willing to use the service, even if there are some places/worlds, avatars, and groups I cannot access. Props to you guys though, this is a huge leap forward!
I have a question. What will happen to people who are very clearly adults that do not want to share their ID information to these partner companies? will they just be locked without any other option? It's all fine and dandy that the video mentions that VRCHAT doesn't have the information outside of birth date, but these "partner companies" having and or even keeping all other information is not explained. This is what rubs me the wrong way. I don't like this system for this reason.

@@bakasheru No rule, law or regulation is perfect. There will be some kids that bypass the verification. Maybe with swiped cards or something. But it will still filter out the vast majority of kids who are too lazy or ignorant of the process to bother. And the ones that do get through and get caught, can be easily reported or banned. If current VRC has you running into 100 kids, making it only 60, 50 or 40 is still an improvement.
Or, how about we actually get parents to be held accountable for what their children do online? Instead of outsourcing all our personal information to a faceless corporate entity again?
Giving a 3rd party company my ID. Nuh uh, I had done this before and that previous 3rd party ID reviewing company had a data breach and leaked millions of personal information, not letting that happen again.
This is important for those clearly adult worlds but thank you for making it optional. I'd rather not store my IRL ID on a server, *even* if it's a reputable 3rd party service.
No offense the idea is great and all but the minute that company perchance has a breach *im aware very rare* it leaks info on users with can be used against someone with malicious intent. I like the idea but i believe vrc should figure something out that’s a bit better then giving information to a company
I love we're finally getting this, but there should be an alternative to ID. I don't think anybody has faith in companies these days to not get us doxxed/hacked/etc. Not that it'd be an issue for me personally most likely, but you get the idea. Maybe you can add a "soft" verification system where after like 4-5 years of playing, you can apply to let people know you've been around a while, and that you're likely over 18.
Goth no. Last thing we need is the 11~ year olds who got a quest and lurnt they could be in places they're not ment to be turning 16-17 and being able to slip in. Not that I'm saying I have total faith in such age varification services. But honestly jsut having to do it in one place would be a big improvement over the current 10 different discord servers I've had to consider showing my ID too >.

Good news is because of what VarChat is, until the company itself starts restricting stuff. You can always find like minds who share your lack of desire to give their ID and yall can make instances of mature stuff and just set verification to off, that is until VRChat itself starts locking stuff behind verification, then it becomes a real problem.

I'm not handing over my identification to some company so I can play a video game, I'm able to BUY M and even ADULTS ONLY games on most platforms by just confirming my DOB, I don't buy this is for "le kiddos", this is clearly a way for an identification company to bang out a quick buck by data collection and VRchat bit full force, this is ridiculous. Just stop. Children are just going to sneak their parents ID and use that anyways. and the number of people okay with this is actually scary, even ADULT WEBSITES don't require identification to upload to or watch from in most places.
I'd like to also point out something that other people are wondering. Will our data be held onto by persona? Seeing how even MASSIVE tech companies like AT&T have suffered data breaches in the past year, some of us are concerned with another company having our identification. How will this be handled?
i've seen other people here answer that they hold onto it for 90 days and it then gets deleted. and someone else said you can request deletion earlier. HOWEVER, I am just repeating what others said, so take it with a grain of salt
there really needs to be better ways to verify age instead of sending photos of your id to some company online that you know eventually is gonna get hacked or most likely sell your data
It's severely depressing. I want to do fun things like this and to hang out in games with my friends but I'm already seeing the way it splits us apart because of our varied morals on privacy. It's so unfortunate, because it's already hard enough to play games with friends, genuinely. We don't always all have the ability or money to play a certain game, and it just feels like the options are limited despite the huge library on Steam for example, does this make sense? And I know kids are always on free and accessible games, but the ID thing is just frustrating.
I just thought about something disastrous... what about kids who use a sibling's or friend's account that is age verified? Now they have a bubble around them that convinces everyone they are legal and safe... Saying that it reduces cases is a bad argument, because it makes the bypass cases worse due to false sense of security.
As a long time SL User this makes me happy. I am thankful that this huge leap in the right direction is being trialed for VRChat, and hope it is a success. Fingers crossed that in the future when it's all figured out that the ToS will also get some love to reflect the age verification system and what sort of user content must be gated behind it. Honestly I'm glad for this because this means the likeliness of joining a random lobby to find a ton of kids running around shouting memes like Amogus or whatever is a lot lower, and it opens the door to having better social interactions with others who just want to hang out and chat.
I'm really concerned about this as well, me and some others in the community brought up our concerns before and quickly were bogged down with people more so worried about younger peeps from annoying them... which is valid.. and a serious issue. Obviously children under the age of 14 shouldn't be on the platform in the first place. Teens I'm not so worried about if community guidelines are followed. This can devide the community, we were all mostly younger users on the platform at somepoint. Data Collection is just as a serious concern, I'm not comfortable with being kicked out of spaces simply because I'm not comfortable with giving up my data. Even if the policy is clear, there's no guarantee it's followed since thus partnerd company isn't open source.. Age verification needs to be done at a web 3 level with Decentralized technologies... VR is supposed to be breaking the ice here, not rolling back.. VRC is literally the social hub of our ecosystem..
I'm not comfortable giving my information to some company that could sell that info off. What? That's illegal? What's stopped companies from doing that before? Or having a data breach? And *I* have to pay for that? No thanks. If that stops me from being in places or even using certain avatars, then I guess I'll go out and touch grass again or play some alternative. At least have an age gate or have VRC+ members have it be automatic. If kids fake it, then they can be reported.
ID verification is a terrible idea. Yes VRC doesn't store the info but Persona does. Online privacy? Ha! I can see it now. Some VRC player is gonna hack into Persona and leak/sell all that info and possibly even link it back to services that ask for it and which accounts. VRC is notorious for how insecure it is. This is just showing how much they really don't think things through. There's a multitude of other issues as well but those have been mentioned over and over again in counter arguments to a id verification system like this for vrc/other games for a long time.
If you use some banking apps or LinkedIn, you've used persona's services before. There's no point in virtue signaling about this when the majority of your information is a Google search away.
@ObliviousCrow I have not used their services before. And if you think this is virtue signaling you obviously don't know what it is. Also yes some info is available but nothing too important. Also just because they may have some doesn't mean we should give them more. That kind of logic is idiotic.
Haven’t seen that much of a problem with kids recently. If adult instances are having problems with them, the instances should be moderated by the creators to begin with. The fact that you intend to restricting content that solely affects the user of said content is seemingly beside the point of why people where asking for this. The problem is kids accessing adult instances, not anything to do with what the kids are seeing but that the kids are causing disturbances. If you want to make the badge, go ahead. Finally! I've stopped playing the more popular games I like because of children invading all of my servers, I've found kids who sound like they haven't even hit puberty yet and are absolutely clueless and innocent. I don't want to be in servers with them because they tend to make the game an absolute chore to play to get them to listen to you and do basic things. With this I can't wait to finally be in servers with people who (mostly) have the mental capacity to know what to do. Thank you VRC
Wonder if in the future you could avatars or worlds up in a way that certain things will be able to only show to people who are age verfied. Definitely interesting, although I have to check out that Persona service first.
Worlds, def, but NSFW avatars should still be banned from social public spaces. Its fine to use that in super private instances, but we still have a problem of people using borderline or flat out nsfw avatars in public around kids, and its insanely cringe.

You cannot use any sort of NSFW avatar outside of private instances, in which public instances include *literally everything except Invite*. Even using it within private instances and consensual, if there are any reports on an NSFW avatar, they will get taken down by VRChat. Though, I do fully agree with borderline NSFW avatars, even if the Tags system is forced on fully for those who don't decide to verify or verify under 18.

Main Question: So when I heard about the partnership with persona, it was mentioned that you needed some for of Government I.D to verify, and you also said that no other information will be recorded except the users DOB. Does this mean that it is ok to use an expired government I.D as it will only record the DOB and not the validity of the I.D, or is it required to have a valid I.D? When I say valid, I primarily mean expired/unexpired I.D.

After doing some research into this Persona company, and their affiliate/parent company Paravision.. that recent EULA arbitration clause change for the game is making a lot more sense.

Great idea, not only will we no longer have to deal with children on instances, but we'll probably see less trolls in those instances as well, because who's going to bother with verification if they are gonna get themselves banned from vrchat within the same day.

that goes together with the question if there will be some unique id or hash of some sort that connects your id data to your account. if we were to take their statement of "we only get your birthdate" at face value then its just a birthday and wouldnt stop you from doing alt accounts... probably best to ask persona identities inc about that.. but they also delete your data no later than 90 days soooooooooo
If this feature gets added I can see a great number of VR chat competitors rising from the ashes because nobody is giving out their actual gov ID, VRC can literally kill itself by adding this feature, I'm Middle Eastern and persona does not accept my ID, i will be leaving VRCHAT, and taking my MANY friends with me....
I love how you can still hide your verification status. Meaning the update does nothing in protecting kids. It's just a huge inconvenience for us adults. As you and Persona (based in TN, the worst state in the US) sell our information.
do I have to keep my data with Persona permanently to remain verified or can I just verify with persona and then delete (as per gdpr) my data from the Persona servers afterwards. to phrase it more clearly can I: step 1: send my ID to Persona step 2: verify my age on VRchat using Persona step 3: delete my ID off of persona step 4: remain verified on VRchat. Because it's a GDPR company, and VRChat seems to be storing only your birthday information following verification, I would assume you can request data deletion and remain verified on the platform.

(I am a minor and this is my thoughts on this) this is a amazing feature but there's issues with the id verification system. There's people (myself included if I had a id) that aren't comfortable sharing that with anyone not to mention one good look at roblox proves this system to just not work and I understand protecting the younger kids on the platform but having it affect the content filters ends up screwing over the 16-17 year olds (if there going with the overly strict approach like I think they will) and one final issue (one that will be VERY difficult to deal with) is people who feel entitled because there over 18 and gatekeep things just because of it I'm sure this could be formatted much better but those are some flaws I noticed. As I said this feature is a amazing idea but should be reworked before releasing

Its optional to do it. However, when they start locking down the mature side of the platform, not having it will mean you're locked out of anything requiring it. It also means the spaces where it isn't required will likely have even more squeakers since that's where they will be allowed.

As long as the age verification service is 100% safe to doxx myself to, then I can see this being ok. I also want age verification, but not have my damn ID involved. Leaks happen anywhere and I don't like the idea that someone could find me over VRC trying to add a safety feature.
They delete your info once you are verified. Also, VRC won't have any of your personal ID info. The third party handles that and then tells VRC that your account is now cleared to be age verified.
@@BoardWalkToke I still think many people will not feel okay with using that kind of verification, for their own reasons. I hope vrc will add alternate ways to verify, or automatically verify trusted users who supported them with vrc+ for a long time.
@BoardWalkToke it's not that I'm worried about VRC will have my info. I did the thing called "watching the video" and know that they're only being told "yup." My worry is the third party company themselves not being trustworthy. And they only delete a specific part of the data when you request deletion. Not the entirety of the data you give. And they could at any point give that data to someone you didn't authorize.

Although I agree with the underage and mildly annoying children, I'd rather not ship my ID somewhere over the internet. I feel like VRchat will have many users that agree with this statement about the underage problem. As well as the ID problem. While talking with friends about this problem even back in the early days of VRchat, I noticed I have a soft spot for security of my own wellbeing. With that being said. Most of my friends as well as myself, will not be sending an ID over the internet. Instead we will either play normally. Or find a different VR social game to play. Being asked for my birthday and name in games we join is already enough. As my online "persona" doesn't stick to my IRL persona. Those are kept separate for many reasons. There's been multiple breaches of this company you plan to use. Just in the past few years there has been breach list released on multiple websites and sources. This is the reason i personally disagree with this. When a user decides a different user is underage, breaking rules, or is just rude and they report it. The user is never looked at or even cared about from the VRchat moderation team. Many times even people on my "friends" have been reported and still play VRchat. On the same account, with no warnings. I have been playing before "release" and still see the same issues. I have reported people that I know STILL play the game on the same account even 5 years later at this point. This won't fix our problem, It is just asking people to sell more of their data. Think about what you are doing here.
Here's an idea that may make things easier for you guys at vrchat. Before we take a photo of our drivers license, we could take a dry erase marker and hide our address or any info you do not require. This way only our photo, & birthday is exposed, making less work for you, and more trust.

As of the time I'm typing this, the FAQ contradicts itself. In "Can I request the deletion of my data?" you say we can request Persona to delete our ID with no affect to verification, but in the December 3rd update you say that ID will need to stay on file. Between big blunders like this and the shady past of Persona's parent company I'm having a hard time putting faith in this system.

After reading a bit on Persona's privacy policy, it looks like you, as the controller of our data, will have the ability to remove all our personal data from Persona's database immediately after you see our date of birth, after a successful verification. You also don't need to retain the DOB after confirming that we're above 18. Is this what you're actually planning to do?
If that's not the case: How long do you plan to retain it for, as you have the ability to set the timer for automatic deletion? It seems you will also be handling our requests to remove personal information, can you clarify if that can easily be done immediately after verification, or within a reasonably very short time, and no data will be kept by both you and Persona, and your/their partners?
This is important as many people are unwilling to risk having another company keep all their personal information even for a few days, and upon request this information also can be accessed by you, including names, photos, videos, addresses and identification numbers, as shown by the API and privacy policy, for example the DOB isn't shown "by default", but you want to see it and you can.
Please clarify on what exactly happens to our information, what you will do and we will be able to do, to protect it.

In the Netherlands you can scan your id and blurr out unnecessary information and it will still be valid.
One thing, if they only need your DoB, you can obscure any other sensitive information on your ID by taping it off or editing it black digitally and then upload that which only shows your DoB, there is no need for them to see all your personal info, if they don't accept it that way than that is suspicious and not according to the EU's GDPR.

Persona checks all of your personal information against a database to ensure you're not submitting fraudulent information, so no you can not just block out parts of your ID. Also, they retain your name as well because they are only allowing an ID to verify one account, so if you have alts they will not be able to be verified.

The only people I see having an issue with this is either those with security concerns (which is valid) or minors and in that case they can just shut up and grow up. Persona is not based in the EU. They are based in San Francisco. They are not subject to GDPR, but they say they are GDPR compliant. The fact that you get this wrong is quite worrying.

The people lying about their age can just keep their badge hidden, they're not going to get exposed.
In fact, having the blue badge be an option for adults actually makes it easier for predators to lie about being minors.

I guess my biggest questions are:
1) You mention it impacting content filters in the future, would this mean unverified/underage accounts could be prohibited from using certain avatars or accessing certain worlds?
2) What is VRChat's plan to combat false positives, like a kid stealing their parents' ID or using an adult's account?
3) Given the enormous amount of content already on the platform, what's the plan to handle things from before content filtering?
2) Persona does a live verification using your computer or cellphone camera via a webpage, requiring a look at a live face and validating it against the pictures on the front and back of your ID. I use it in the financial industry all the time, and its very good at what it does. But it does have issues with glasses and exceptionally large beards.

My biggest concern is what happens to all the adult people who do not wish to verify using Persona, will they be left out/blocked from certain worlds and instances? Will there be alternate ways to verify without giving too much personal information? I will wait it out and see what happens.

At that point, the bad actors are of the parents who would be banned for breaking the rules once the user report is made. This update seems to be a case of limiting bad actors, not those smart enough to use their bad parenting parents to get around online security protocols. At that point, you are questioning why you don't have a Big Brother system.
@@BadHaddy One of the high downsides is pulling up a picture of an ID, along with a cropped photo of the face directly from the ID, therefore bypassing the face verification aspect and age verification all together. So unless the verification system is genuinely great and magnificient at what it does, who knows we might still have to hear brainrot in group instances :P

Nothing screams trustworthy ID verification like a US-based company skating by on shaky legal frameworks cobbled together thanks to some political maneuvering between the EU Commission and the US. The Court of Justice of the European Union has already *retroactively* torched all prior frameworks, and the current framework is a re-brand of the last failed attempt.
Persona's data protection officer is also conveniently based in Ireland. The country whose data protection agency is notorious for dragging its feet on cases, interpreting the GDPR in ways that businesses love (even when the European Data Protection Board strongly disagrees), and wrapping everything in gag orders to avoid accountability. It's not like Ireland has a reputation for being the weakest link in GDPR enforcement or anything.
If that doesn't fill you with confidence about how your sensitive data will be handled, I don't know what will. No worries about US agencies being able to request your data without notice because the US company is so committed to breaking US surveillance laws for GDPR compliance.

I've heard reports on Personas partners (take Paravision for example) that have been found using user ids from Persona for use in training AI. While Persona is GDPR compliant, Paravision is not.
Can VChat promise that if we use Persona, that our data will not leave Persona and VRChat,and will be fully deleted once age is confirmed. I don't feel secure knowing this I a risk.
I'd rather VRchat find an actual EU based, GDPR compliant company that will follow through with the ge verification and have our data scrubbed. Either that or the VRChat team do it themselves.
You're searching for certainty in a place where it just doesn't exist. Unless you're planning to raid Persona's offices and do a full audit yourself, you'll never know for sure if they (or maybe someone already inside their systems, or a government agency) are holding onto your information.

What were the main reasons to chose Persona and what research and steps have you made to ensure that you are not putting player's personal information at risk with this partnership?
Are there any systems in place preventing any leaked data from Persona being correlated to individual accounts in VRC? Is any data kept on Persona's server, or after the verification, is it simply your date of birth being saved with your VRC account and that's it? I'm sure VRC has some negotiation power in this partnership to determine what data gets kept and what doesn't by default.
To be clear, I'm 1000% for age verification in VRC. I'm certain in the long run that this will significantly benefit the community. I'm just concerned about user's data privacy and any potential reputation damages that might happen to VRC if something would happen to Persona's data.
Personally, its not about IF a company has a data breach, its about WHEN and doing a calculated risk as to whether share that personal data or not. The internet never forgets.
Apparently, Roblox (and a few other platforms) already uses Persona, so I searched for their FAQ since guidelines should be the same.
Persona keeps the picture you take 90 days, so you may need to re-verify every few months unless VRchat/Roblox/ decides a single time is enough on their side.
Which would mean it stays verified long after any data is gone IF that's how they go for it and not asking every 90 days.
The platform can also ask to re-verify "on accessing restricted goods" and "on transaction" according to Persona feature list on their website, so...
Depending on how it's implemented, the verification can either go:
"One time verification, no long term data kept past the first 90 days" (which would be equivalent to when you link the account to Meta/Steam)
OR...
"Verify every 90 days + On creator-economy transaction + On joining a restricted instance/world + On applying for a restricted group + On switching to a restricted avatar"
(which could become old real fast... xD)

@@renookami4651 To add to this, and to avoid some concerns from OP, it's very likely VRC just throws you to a link and expects a callback from it with your birthdate. That's the only information VRC would get from this, and Persona likely has no idea who you are in terms of VRC username and such.

These are pretty unfounded concerns. The best case scenario is they teamed up with someone in the EU as they have absolutely mind-bogglingly high consequences for breeches. And they did persona is even used by multi-billion-dollar companies like Roblox. None of liability for a VR chat data breach now.
If you are going to have age verification then you are going to have to store the data. It's really that simple. This will put the age verification in the same category as only fans and fansly.

I expect the age verification process to also require access to your camera to double check you are not using someone else's ID, on top of a manual final up check.

I've quickly gone through the privacy policy of Persona, and it clearly states that they uphold their rights to share our personal data with third parties they are in a business relationship with.
I already know people will say they need to say that to be able to share, in this case, our date of birth with VRChat, but I *reeeally* dont like the open-endedness of the above statement. I do not trust these random websites that I've never heard of before to send them actual photos of my ID.

It's a trusted third party based in the EU. We have very powerful privacy laws over here. Any pictures will be stored for 90 days max. Any breach of GDPR (the laws on how to handle privat information) will nuke them from orbit

While I'm very on the side of age verification, data privacy is also a huge part of it for me. Even though I'd like to verify myself and that others are verified, I do not like the idea of sharing personal information past my age, as persona sometimes asks for (not a concern on you taking it). They also sometimes charge for this, and I am not the biggest fan of the idea of paying someone to take my identifiers. Again, I am completely for this change, but I personally will wait and see how it goes. These changes can often go badly, I've seen it before with other games, and with things in real life such as stores containing adult contents. For now, I am not willing to use the service, even if there are some places/worlds, avatars, and groups I cannot access. Props to you guys though, this is a huge leap forward!

@@bakasheru No rule, law or regulation is perfect. There will be some kids that bypass the verification. Maybe with swiped cards or something. But it will still filter out the vast majority of kids who are too lazy or ignorant of the process to bother. And the ones that do get through and get caught, can be easily reported or banned.
If current VRC has you running into 100 kids, making it only 60, 50 or 40 is still an improvement.

I love we're finally getting this, but there should be an alternative to ID. I don't think anybody has faith in companies these days to not get us doxxed/hacked/etc. Not that it'd be an issue for me personally most likely, but you get the idea. Maybe you can add a "soft" verification system where after like 4-5 years of playing, you can apply to let people know you've been around a while, and that you're likely over 18.

It's severely depressing. I want to do fun things like this and to hang out in games with my friends but I'm already seeing the way it splits us apart because of our varied morals on privacy. It's so unfortunate, because it's already hard enough to play games with friends, genuinely. We don't always all have the ability or money to play a certain game, and it just feels like the options are limited despite the huge library on Steam for example, does this make sense? And I know kids are always on free and accessible games, but the ID thing is just frustrating.
I just thought about something disastrous... what about kids who use a sibling's or friend's account that is age verified? Now they have a bubble around them that convinces everyone they are legal and safe... Saying that it reduces cases is a bad argument, because it makes the bypass cases worse due to false sense of security.

As a long time SL User this makes me happy. I am thankful that this huge leap in the right direction is being trialed for VRChat, and hope it is a success. Fingers crossed that in the future when it's all figured out that the ToS will also get some love to reflect the age verification system and what sort of user content must be gated behind it. Honestly I'm glad for this because this means the likeliness of joining a random lobby to find a ton of kids running around shouting memes like Amogus or whatever is a lot lower, and it opens the door to having better social interactions with others who just want to hang out and chat.

I'm really concerned about this as well, me and some others in the community brought up our concerns before and quickly were bogged down with people more so worried about younger peeps from annoying them... which is valid.. and a serious issue.
Obviously children under the age of 14 shouldn't be on the platform in the first place.
Teens I'm not so worried about if community guidelines are followed. This can devide the community, we were all mostly younger users on the platform at somepoint.
Data Collection is just as a serious concern, I'm not comfortable with being kicked out of spaces simply because I'm not comfortable with giving up my data.

ID verification is a terrible idea. Yes VRC doesn't store the info but Persona does. Online privacy? Ha! I can see it now. Some VRC player is gonna hack into Persona and leak/sell all that info and possibly even link it back to services that ask for it and which accounts.
VRC is notorious for how insecure it is. This is just showing how much they really don't think things through.
There's a multitude of other issues as well but those have been mentioned over and over again in counter arguments to a id verification system like this for vrc/other games for a long time.
If you use some banking apps or LinkedIn, you've used persona's services before. There's no point in virtue signaling about this when the majority of your information is a Google search away.

Haven’t seen that much of a problem with kids recently. If adult instances are having problems with them, the instances should be moderated by the creators to begin with. The fact that you intend to restricting content that solely affects the user of said content is seemingly beside the point of why people where asking for this. The problem is kids accessing adult instances, not anything to do with what the kids are seeing but that the kids are causing disturbances. If you want to make the badge, go ahead. Don’t have it affect the rest of the game though.
Finally! I've stopped playing the more popular games I like because of children invading all of my servers, I've found kids who sound like they haven't even hit puberty yet and are absolutely clueless and innocent. I don't want to be in servers with them because they tend to make the game an absolute chore to play to get them to listen to you and do basic things. With this I can't wait to finally be in servers with people who (mostly) have the mental capacity to know what to do.

Worlds, def, but NSFW avatars should still be banned from social public spaces. Its fine to use that in super private instances, but we still have a problem of people using borderline or flat out nsfw avatars in public around kids, and its insanely cringe.

You cannot use any sort of NSFW avatar outside of private instances, in which public instances include *literally everything except Invite*. Even using it within private instances and consensual, if there are any reports on an NSFW avatar, they will get taken down by VRChat. Though, I do fully agree with borderline NSFW avatars, even if the Tags system is forced on fully for those who don't decide to verify or verify under 18.

Main Question: So when I heard about the partnership with persona, it was mentioned that you needed some for of Government I.D to verify, and you also said that no other information will be recorded except the users DOB. Does this mean that it is ok to use an expired government I.D as it will only record the DOB and not the validity of the I.D, or is it required to have a valid I.D? When I say valid, I primarily mean expired/unexpired I.D.

After doing some research into this Persona company, and their affiliate/parent company Paravision.. that recent EULA arbitration clause change for the game is making a lot more sense.
Do you intend to absorb the costs associated with verification or do you plan on passing on the cost to the end user (either by requiring VRC+, having a separate charge for verifying or both)?
Great idea, not only will we no longer have to deal with children on instances, but we'll probably see less trolls in those instances as well, because who's going to bother with verification if they are gonna get themselves banned from vrchat within the same day.

(I am a minor and this is my thoughts on this) this is a amazing feature but there's issues with the id verification system. There's people (myself included if I had a id) that aren't comfortable sharing that with anyone not to mention one good look at roblox proves this system to just not work and I understand protecting the younger kids on the platform but having it affect the content filters ends up screwing over the 16-17 year olds (if there going with the overly strict approach like I think they will) and one final issue (one that will be VERY difficult to deal with) is people who feel entitled because there over 18 and gatekeep things just because of it

Its optional to do it. However, when they start locking down the mature side of the platform, not having it will mean you're locked out of anything requiring it. It also means the spaces where it isn't required will likely have even more squeakers since that's where they will be allowed.

I've never used VR Chat, but there ain't no way I'll ever submit my ID to a company if I can't blurr out absolutely everything besides the birthdate.
It's even more invasive than that, they require you to send them a 3d scan of your face as part of the process.

As long as the age verification service is 100% safe to doxx myself to, then I can see this being ok. I also want age verification, but not have my damn ID involved. Leaks happen anywhere and I don't like the idea that someone could find me over VRC trying to add a safety feature.

They delete your info once you are verified. Also, VRC won't have any of your personal ID info. The third party handles that and then tells VRC that your account is now cleared to be age verified.
@@BoardWalkToke I still think many people will not feel okay with using that kind of verification, for their own reasons. I hope vrc will add alternate ways to verify, or automatically verify trusted users who supported them with vrc+ for a long time.
@BoardWalkToke it's not that I'm worried about VRC will have my info. I did the thing called "watching the video" and know that they're only being told "yup." My worry is the third party company themselves not being trustworthy. And they only delete a specific part of the data when you request deletion. Not the entirety of the data you give. And they could at any point give that data to someone you didn't authorize.
