- DIVINE SERVICES IN HOLY TRINITY MONASTERY, JORDANVILLE, NY, SUNG BY THE PATRIARCH TIKHON MALE CHOIR.
From February 23-27, 2014, the Patriarch Tikhon Russian American Music Institute (PaTRAM) held a Master Class for the Patriarch Tikhon Male Choir at Holy Trinity Monastery and Seminary in Jordanville, NY. The Master Class was centered around choral workshops with Choirmaster Vladimir Gorbik, choir director at the Moscow Representation Church (Metochion) of Holy Trinity-St Sergius Monastery.
At the workshops, Master Class participants, including the Holy Trinity Seminary Choir under the direction of Reader Nicholas Kotar, studied four-part harmony and an English and Slavonic repertoire. Above all, the Master Class focused on singing spiritually, in keeping with PaTRAM's characteristic desire to unite professionalism with prayer.
On Wednesday night and Thursday morning, the Master Class participants sang the divine services in honor of the Holy Equal-of-the-Apostles Saint Cyril, Teacher of the Slavs. Vespers, Matins, and Divine Liturgy were led by the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, His Eminence, Metropolitan Hilarion, co-served by monastery clergy.
С 23 по 27 февраля Русско-Американский Музыкальный Институт им. Патриарха Тихона (PaTRAM) дал мастер-класс для Св. Тихоновского мужского хора при Св. Троицком монастыре и семинарии в Джорданвилле, шт. Нью-Йорк. Центральным в мастер-классе стал хоровой семинар, который провел хормейстер Владимир Горбик, регент храма московского подворья Св. Троице-Сергиевой лавры.
В ходе семинара участники мастер-класса, включая хор Св. Троицкой семинарии под управлением чт. Николая Котара изучали четырехголосное пение и репертуар на английском и славянском языках. Помимо этого, основное внимание во время мастер-класса было сконцентрировано на пении духовно, в соответствии с характерным для PaTRAM желанием соединить профессионализм с молитвой.
В среду вечером и четверг утром участники мастер-класса пели за богослужениями в честь св. равноап. Кирилла, Учителя Словенского. Вечерню, утреню и Божественную литургию возглавлял Первоиерарх Русской Зарубежной Церкви Высокопреосвященнейший митрополит Иларион, в сослужении насельников монастыря в священном сане.

It is Ipateyevsky monastery chant arranged by arch.Matfei Mormyl- psalm 103 sung at the start of a vigil
I like it when they sing softly, or with volume change, but I don't care much for the "army march" style that one can hear esp. at the beginning and throughout. Even when strong and loud, the volume can be modulated so it doesn't sound so harsh. Also, a bit too fast for my taste, doesn't put you into a trance state. Otherwise, very promising.
when you listen this...you shouldn't be in any trance... this is not orthodoxy undestanding of praying. God Bless you
I'm sure the Celabelle didn't mean "trance" in the normal sense but in the sense that similarly when one looks at a good icon it can take one from earth and transports one out, so prayful chant can do the same as it too is an "icon". Army march style chant can't do this. I agree with her other assessments also.@@MetalYarick89

The objective of Orthodox church chant is prayer. Prayer is a highly energised state, not one of ‘trance induction’. The object of Orthodox prayer is to bring oneself closer to God as Father of all creation, to seek the grace of compassion for all human beings, the grace to discern the energies of the Holy Spirit in the world, and to receive the strength to remain wholly committed to the pathway of Christ - the Way, the Truth and the Life. In comparison to this, ‘trancelike’ states are more akin to demonic possession than to true prayer.
