    I remember Andy scoring a hattrick against Dundee United at Cappielow in November 1978, the third goal he lobbed the ball from about 35 yards over Hamish McAlpine, the United goalkeeper. There was always excitement when Andy had the ball. Great days at Cappielow back then.

    Some too notch goals there by a super player. I remember he scored a 35-40 yard beauty at Parkhead, only for the referee to chalk it off for a player 20 yards out interfering with play😂. The Celtic fans had applauded the goal and then jeered the referee when he chalked it off

    When I was 12 yrs old, I thought Andy Ritchie and Jim Rooney, where as good as Anyone, I support Rangers

    A class act he was. And Morton were Aberdeen's bogey team especially at Cappielow.

    How comes neither Morton nor Ayr United ever seem to play in the topflight?

    The game from 1:14, was that Martin Tyler on commentary?

    • @72moon
      @72moon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. Not entirely sure why, but the Scottish Leagues may have started up before the English Leagues had and ITV needed a game to cover.

      @@72moon never thought he’d lower himself to a Morton game, he must’ve got out his rolls Royce at Cappielow and thought…nope lol. I jest of course. Always a good atmosphere at Cappielow, especially when they play St Mirren lol

      Andy explained it on the PLZ podcast he did. Arthur had went on holiday to Spain as they were expecting all games to be called off due to weather - but this game went ahead and was the only one on in the country - so they flew up a young Martin Tyler to stand in. I think it may even have been live on ITV’s The Big Match.

      Thanks for the content btw. My 73 year old dad idolised big Andy. He’s Greenock born and bred and Morton daft … despite spending most of his life living and working in Paisley 😂
      It’s been great to be able to show him this stuff mate 😎

    Did Andy Ritchie ever play for Scotland? He was a dead ball specialist and a pest when Hearts played lagainst him. Morton had a great side then.

    • @Shades-of-76
      @Shades-of-76 ปีที่แล้ว

      No full cap, only a single U-21 game as an overage player. Apparently Hearts tried to buy him in the late 70s and bid £125,000 but it never went through.

      1 game for the under 21s , that's how good Scotland were at the time

    • @72moon
      @72moon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They’re called Invacars. At the time they were the main type of “disabled” cars and were allowed to drive into the ground.
      On some older clips/photos they’re even parked round the side of the pitch.

      @@Shades-of-76 and Matt Le Tissier. Paddy McCourt in recent years as well. When someone asks me who was the better player, Messi or Ronaldo, I give them the same answer: Messi is the better footballer but Ronaldo is the better athlete. Andy showed you don’t need to be a good athlete to be a good footballer. Chic Young once said “Andy Ritchie is the epitome of the Scottish footballer, all the technical skill in the world but a fat lazy bastard” lol. He was a bit before my time but I would’ve loved to have seen him. My uncle is Celtic supporter who lives in the Port but would go to Cappielow to watch him in the 70s and 80s. He said he was the third greatest he ever seen, behind Dalglish and Larsson.

Benny Rooneys a really nice fella, he coached my brother’s youth team for a little while, and told us some of the shithoosery Andy would do to avoid training lol. Andy’s books a good read

      What a great comment😆!
      Pretty close to being entirely true.
      Paddy feckin' McCourt😂! Not really LeTissier calibre but a great example of an idle underachiever.
      I doubt there's any player on here with a highlights reel as impressive as LeTissier.

      @@alanainsworth4832 Le Tissier played in the premier league and played for England while at a so called diddy team, really shows his quality. Matt Le Tissier scored some of the finest goals in PL history. Plus his penalty record was quite exemplary, 28 out of 29 I think. Do you remember Georgi Kinkladze who played for Man City?
