I think by "privateer" they're referring to the fact that Walker purchased cars from other manufacturers to race. Both McLaren and Braun were works teams, building there own cars.
I understand your point and in that regard Walker is a privateer but McLaren is really the ultimate privateer. He designed, built, and raced his own cars...AND stomped all the established 'big name' brands. That good sir is the mark of a true privateer.

I do believe that Bruce McLaren was in the top 0.0001 % of the "Garagestas". JMHO, not saying that Bruce McLaren was not a Gentleman, but "Privateer" doesn't really fit him.

Because McLaren built is own cars to race under his own name as did Brabham. A privateer is some one who purchased a car from a chassis manufacturer and races that in their own name, either as entrant or driver.
