- Context for those not in the know:
In 2017, Ding Dong & Julian were the only gay men in the office while Dream Daddy was being developed. They were shown an early build and were offended by what they considered to be tasteless pandering and exploitation of the LGBT community. Apparently they weren’t the only ones and a group of people were planning on speaking up about it and suggested that Ding Dong & Julian be the ones to speak up first since they were the only two gay men. So Ding Dong went on stream and said what he thought about it all and has very fair and rational criticism about the game. But this caused a major backlash from people at the Grumps office and had people including Suzy and Ninja Brian publicly tweeting against Ding Dong trying to discredit everything he said. They claimed he was lying about ever seeing the game and that he was just out to get the Grumps team. In response to this, the “lovelies” came to the Grumps defense and started going after Ding Dong. They doxxed him, and even contacted his abusive homophobic mother telling her their son was gay before he ever had a chance to come out to them. His family was NOT accepting of this and apparently it wasn’t pretty after they found out. This pushed Ding Dong to attempt suicide but he was stopped by Julian. The Grumps never acknowledged this, and apparently told everyone to keep quiet. Ding Dong talks in this stream about the experience and the shady stuff going on behind the scenes at Game Grumps including the cover up of his suicide attempt.

That shows that an Orwellian 1984 situation does not only happen to whole countries, it can happen in small groups too. Those exact words: "Nothing I say matters. Nothing I do matters," individuals in families can, or have felt like that since childhood.

the worst part about all of this is that it was all because of a videogame that had absolutely no fucking impact on the world. no one has ever cared about dream daddy and no one will ever care. it's just so ridiculous that these two men have been suffering for years all because of a gimmicky soulless game.
When i was in college i was somewhat close to a few students in the film department that were working on a short movie. Nothing too crazy, it was a short film based on an existing property, but it was the first "film" that a lot of the students got to work on.
The absolute chaos and insanity that ensued was way, way too much. Some of the students fell into drug abuse or relapsed, all were pulling multiple all nighters, there was one person that was uber controlling and wanted to direct, edit, color correct, literally do everything on the film and micromanage everything the other students did. They spent 10+ hours in 110 degree heat just to get 30 second shots that they ended up scrapping. At one point the uber controlling person wanted to ADR every piece of dialogue in this live action film just so that they could have more control over exactly how the lines sounded/were delivered, and they actually did for a good portion of the film before it was scrapped, which again led to multiple all nighters on eventually wasted work. There is so much more that i didn't even see, i just saw the students withering away, bags under their eyes, losing weight, losing hair, etc on a surface level.
This wasn't for some oscar winning, revolutionary piece of cinema. This was for a 30 minute short film that was going to be shown at a small local student film festival *one time* and entered into an amateur film contest.

It happens in every aspect of the entertainment industry though, any project that involves multiple people actively contributing to a single creative work is gonna get pretty fucked up. Video, photography, graphic design, music, dance, journalism, published literature of any kind, etc. The people that treat the creative process as meticulously as brain surgery, picking apart every single idea until it's dead, are the worst.

It genuinely pisses me off how people make such a big deal over very minor things. A gay person came out and said that they disapproved of a game that they thought was fetishizing his community. Fair enough, he has every right to have that opinion. But the fact that everyone had to make a big fuss over an opinion, to the point where someone was driven to the attempting of suicide, is infuriating. I genuinely hope Ding Dong is doing alright now and has been able to at least mend his relationship with his family and deal with his mental health.
He couldve said nothing constructive and said how the game is stinky and poopy and dumb and everyone associated with its creation are big diaper wearing babies and even then nothing that happened to him could ever be justified. Its insane that people still try to mock this situation and write it off as "Okay, so you shit on your boss and companies work and you expect sympathy when that comes back to bite you proffessionally?" As if the mistreatment of DD and Julian didnt stretch before the situation and long after, or if any of what they suffered was in any way proportional than criticizing a game.
Reminder that DingDong didn't come out willingly. Some dick head doxxed him and told his whole family he was gay. All before he was even ready.
It wasn't just Ding Dong's opinion. Ding Dong was voicing criticisms that people on the development team were having and were told to him in private, too. Then once he started getting alienated and getting backlash for voicing those opinions, the developers denied everything.

Dude this shit is actually fucked up. These guys are so talented and this industry sucked the life out of them. And people aren't going to give enough of a shit, I've already seen posts saying DD is being too bitter. These people literally ruined his life and he is still, five years later being kind about it.
And this is why we say that those in the industry are not human.
He’s being a lot kinder than he should when talking about this when you consider what he and Julian went through. And even though I personally don’t think Ding Dong is coming off as bitter, I feel like it’s not wrong to be. I mean hell, his life was put under the microscope by thousands of people; People were trying to find out his real name, his address, info on his family and just so much more shit. And for what, airing out some criticisms over a video game of all things??? And mind you, from his story, he wasn’t even the only one who felt this way, BUT was the only one who was vocal about it so it was easy for all the others to put the pin on him and pretend like they had no idea what he was going on about.
People outed his sexuality to his family because of this. People made sure that he and Julian were blacklisted over this. They made sure that his life was so hellish to the point that he made an attempt on his life and then someone had the nerve to tell him he SHOULD just so he can supposedly get “revenge”???
You know, it was hard to witness all of this unfolding but it hits even harder knowing that he genuinely felt like these people were his friends. It’s so disgusting. He has a lot more strength than I would in a situation as awful as that because I would have been more than just “bitter”. He got played like a fiddle and was crucified over having an opinion.
I just hope that him and Julian can continue healing and maybe feel a little less burden by letting some of this mess be out in the open. They deserved so much better.

As a gay man myself, I’ve listened to Ding Dong’s criticism of Dream Daddy, and I even played the game myself and…it’s all SO accurate, and SO deserved. The game sucks ass except for art design and the entertaining voice acting. It’s FILLED with gay stereotypes that just SCREAM “this story was written by a straight team that THINKS they know how all this gay stuff works cuz they binged 2 seasons of Queer eye”.
The ONLY good part was the relationship with the character’s daughter, cuz gay single parent struggles are important to highlight, and it was actually written pretty ok.
Ding dong’s comments were also SO simple and non-controversial. He RIGHTFULLY commented on how it felt out of touch and surface level. Which it IS. The backlash he got was INSANE. Also like…..don’t you think the ONLY TWO GAY EMPLOYEES should have their input be valued whether it’s positive or negative? Wtf is with this entitled crybaby response. Absolutely SICKENING. Game grumps should be ASHAMED of how they reacted and how they shoved all this stuff under the rug and refused to take responsibility. THEY caused a large amount of this, and they have NEVER admitted fault. That’s despicable.

the bystander effect is so real and soul-crushing. It's not just the entertainment industry affected by it; recently after months of planning and talking about it with my coworkers, I tried to start a union for better working conditions at our job. EVERYONE was on board, day over day they all said "what a great idea" "I support you" "I'll sign whatever you need me to" but as soon as I had a real plan of action, they all cowered. Every single one of them hid from the responsibility because it "put their jobs at risk" and I "had no right to mess with their livelihoods". I was crushed.
Sad to hear that man. Everyone talks a big game until the moment comes for actual action then they get cold feet and will trip over themselves to get out of the way of the consequences.

Bro this happened to me!!! My department is split into 4 crews, 2 day shift and 2 night shift crews (A,B,C and D) We got everything ready to go, 93% of our staff signed the initial petition cards, when the official labor board vote came around it ended up being a 8 yes 7 no vote. Still a win and we succeeded but pretty much everyone on night crews lied to our faces about being supportive. Now I can't trust them.

I mean, DingDong states he doesn't really want anything to come out of it besides being left the fuck alone. He doesn't want some type of repentance or apology to come out of it because it wouldn't change anything or be sincere. This is the unfortunate world of being a high profile youtuber/streamer with a company and brand to manage nowadays. We've seen it happen to a lot of people across the youtube and twitch space. People being done dirty behind the scenes where it's then swept under the rug to keep the fame and money train going for those at the top and the center focus of the cameras.

The scumbaggery didn't end when DD and Julian left LA, those people still work there. And as much as Ding Dong wants to move on from it, Julian can't and it was made clear should Ding Dong pass, Julian has full reign to air out everything. Arin and the people involved there should be held accountable and they will inevitably face it in the future.
If anyone’s coming to this without having seen the original stream, keep in mind that Matt came in while DD was talking about what matt did, dropped 150 gift subs ($750 USD) and said “love you guys!”, and everyone in chat started thanking him profusely and talking about loving his channel and music. @borger9300 he mentioned that in thst sphere of yourubers, someone was housing people who have harmed children and I think before this part of the vod or after, he mentions there was a stalker on 4chan and deviantart who would want attention from people by claiming they had dirt on dingdong and julian because he knew them (he only know julian and they only had 3 conversations). That stalker also appeared in the stream and then ran away when they knew and begged julian on facebook to not out them. DingDong also opened up about what happened ot him when he was younger snd his situation with his mom and how rough it was that his whole family cut him off after being outted. The rant you see here is because matt showed up, donated 150 subs to buy DD's silence and make him happy since DD was already beginning to rant about Dream Daddy.

@@stellarstar6553 i've come to the realization that it is just twitter or any super sanitized modern social network. it reinforces bullying and bullying related behavior by design. i understood this after seeing a video of a guy taking revenge of a bully and people defending the bully with their "2010 morality speech". like i finally saw what was wrong with it. it turned a lightbulb in my head. everyone terminally on twitter was a bully in school, can't bully anyone anymore, and has twitter as their only venting system, or was bullied and now wants to become a bully. that's why political extremism finds fertile ground on twitter cause political extremism wants to put the boot over their adversary out of some inferiority complex or perceived wrong the adversary has done, ergo be a bully to random people cause you are insecure. like it is that particular brand of manipulative "holier than you" high-school bullying. I'm talking about the " this guy offended me, i offend them back better, they call the teachers on me and start crying." type of bullying.

Once in a lifetime? Most people don't even get the once, and even then such solid people are becoming ever-so much rarer to find. DD and Julian were pretty much the canary in the coal mine for the GG employees. They just wanted to see what would happen if any of them spoke up...also kind of explains why Game Grumps has severely been dropping in quality over the years. DD and Julian didn't deserve any of this horrible treatment.
Wouldn't Jon have been the canary in the coal mine? That situation was definitely the first instance of the "Don't talk about it." approach Arin seems to favor. Even the fake fighting thing. In fact, a lot of those episodes have very strange moments where they fight in a way that almost exactly lines up with what happens later lol
DD definitely got the worst of it, though. This is the kind of thing no one can expect is going to happen until it does. Truly harrowing.

julians little "im not as nice as ding dong " made me smile . this was horrible to hear. this fills the gaps on what ive heard else where and its horrible to hear about the industry
love how Ding Dong specifically mentioned how people would want to weaponize his story against specific members of the Game Grumps office and how little he thinks of people who act like that, and then every 5th comment here is someone going "oh man, Ding Dong has incriminating information about Arin..." as if that's their sole takeaway from this. Throughout this entire debacle from 2017 until now, he only mentioned Arin by name twice, once in the original stream where he mentioned how the Grumps (Arin and Dan) have nothing to do with his negative feelings about the game and now again when mentioning how people would try and use DD and his experience to try and incriminate him.
I don't have a high opinion of the guy either because of various other shit he's been wrapped up in, but it's actually embarrassing that people latch onto Arin being the sole bad guy behind every possible situation to the point of their only takeaway from this emotional rant is "wowie imagine what this could do to Arin's reputation!" when there's so much more going on.
Edit: To clarify further; I'm not saying that Arin is without blame here. He's a higher up within the company and without a doubt a contributing factor to the office attaining the environment that it has, past and present. What I'm saying is, your only takeaway from this whole situation shouldn't be "incriminating information about Arin! finally!" when there's an entire staff worth of people that should be held accountable. The Grumps office had more people than just Arin in management positions over the years, especially around 2017.
I feel so bad for Ding Dong and Julian of having to reopen old wounds like this. I hate online drama stuff because it always climbs up on top and lingers for so long. I haven't watched DD&J since their brief return to OneyPlays, and today I was just curious on what they were up to recently. Little did I know all this needless drama was being spread, and now I just feel bad for them.
I feel like being “blacklisted” in the entertainment industry doesn’t mean you’ve done anything inherently wrong, it just means you started to speak out against the (toxic) norm in the industry.
Look at the 50s and 60s with the red scare, so many writers and actors were were blacklisted not because of their inability to do their job, but because they were suspected to be communists (i.e. going and being against the norm)
I know I’m somewhat comparing apples to oranges, but the term “blacklisted” seems like the Hollywood/entertainment version of being “cancelled”

It genuinely hurts me to know that they were locked into horrible working conditions while I was sitting back and laughing at their content with Oneyplays. I was bummed out when they left the channel, but at the time the only information I could find for leaving was that they were going to be creating a game together (no idea if that was true or not). Instead there was this whole horrific sequence of events going on. I'm just glad they're still with us. I hope that knowing there are caring strangers in the world, who enjoy their content and wish them love and happiness, helps them in some way.

This is a lot to absorb. As someone who's spent many hours listening to compilations/playthroughs involving DD & Julian it's very disappointing to hear how they've been treated and how hopeless life got for DD at one point. I can't describe how happy I felt listening to this and knowing what a rock Julian is for DD and how he took a backseat and just let DD get off his chest what he needed to. We obviously aren't owed an explanation, but hopefully one day the filter will come off and we'll get a more clear outline of what happened. I think it's healthy to remind people that, beyond watching TH-cam videos and having to take internet personalities at "face value," there's a lot more that happens behind the scenes and relationships can become very complicated when friendships and working relationships intertwine.
If someone just talked to you about an attempt they made on their life, and your first response is to encourage them to do that in the hopes to get back at someone, you need to take a _long_ look at yourself, and then punch yourself. Can't believe that actually happened.

What's insane is that Dream Daddy isn't a well-written game at all. They _had_ to have known this. It's not at all worth the price for the lackluster story it attempts to give. The characters are all extremely shallow and uninteresting in every aspect.
I don't mind stereotypes. I'm fine with them. But a stereotype should only be the basis of your character, not the entirety of it. The only thing i remember about the love interests were their designs. That's it.

I like Matt, but I am little disappointed in his dishonestly throughout this. I’m glad Ryan didn’t seem to cause any issues and was upfront. He did always feel like the more genuine of the two.
When DD said Matt I had a feeling it was him bc of his connection and being around Chris. It sucks bc I support SM whole-heartedly and makes me question Matt a bit.

@@orangesimmer7928 I stopped watching Super Mega around when covid hit in 2020. I noticed Matt and Ryan seemed more like ex-friends who work together instead of actual friends who loved and cared for another. I recently watched some of their stuff and they seem so toxic and burnt out it’s honestly sad.

I worked in an environment almost IDENTICAL to this. I'm glad Ding Dong is finally out and pursuing his own goals. It's miserable to experience this mistreatment. Thank you, Julian, for being supportive.

I feel pretty crappy listening to this. I remember making snide comments on some videos following Julian stating he wanted to pretend OneyPlays didn't happen, but listening to this it's obvious why he'd feel that way. DD&J come across as super genuine people and they got dicked over in the most unfair ways. I hope Wan Wan Games works out, and look forward to seeing what kinds of stuff they come up with in the future.
I don't think they have any problems with Oney from what I found oney fell out with Arin over the amount he charged for using grump equipment and the game situation. Julian didn't want to be seen as a character and was worried about negatively influencing kids, Ding dong is just private.
All of the problems they had were from when Oneyplays was based out of the grumps office and when they were getting paid by Arin's crew. As far as I can tell there isn't any beef between Chris and DD+J and Chris fell out with arin because he probably saw what happened and didn't want to be associated with him anymore. Their OneyStays segment was pretty recent (end of 2021?) and I remember hearing DD still talks with Chris, so they're on good terms

They don’t have any problems with Chris. They even plan on coming back to finish Yiik on OneyPlays.

The animation industry can be super toxic but not always. I would probably stay out of Cali for that sort of thing because it's always so competitive, fake and sociopathic that it's just not even worth it. Go overseas somewhere where the industry is still young
I literally love this group of guys so much and I don’t even know what half of them look like. To hear this really makes me sad, but happy to see they’re in a better place, physically and mentally.

Arin clearly is an insincere human. Everything he does now drips with "this is a business move", and lacks any sort of connection or empathy with the others involved, or the audience.

julian and ding dong were the reason i watched oneyplays and i was heartbroken when they left. it was literally the same year i got into them, maybe even within a few months.
i was aware of the dream daddy drama, but i didn't know it was this bad. im glad i don't bother with game grumps anymore and i just can't watch oneyplays without these boys.

No. It's just LA, northern California is a lot more chill. A lot. LA is where every stuck up asshole tries to make it in Hollywood, people move from where you live to LA to become rich and famous. It's literally filled to the brim with assholes. Back in the 80's and 90's road rage was so common in LA (bc everyone had a massive ego) that TV and movies would regularly poke fun by depicting people getting in gunfights on the freeway like it's a normal part of rush hour. Now imagine that being a joke where you live. In fact I would surmise that your state is much more chill bc all the asshole egomaniacs that would be there already left and moved to southern california 😆
