Been playing Ham radio for a while and have never used ALC on any of my amps. My 40+ year old Dentron Clipperton L is the only one with an ALC input.
Don't worry there are a lot of hams that will let you know really quick if you're a little distorted. The old saying "Trash in Trash out" keep the exciter clean the amp will reproduce with you feed it.
