@@MrTeeF k, i mean if so called g0vnt agents got into it without a w4rrant is there anything that can be done about it to secure it, maybe them putting in spying or monitoring stuff or something? ive seen how hackers can easily bypass windows logins for example, but never seen how they may use backdoors to get into devices like this/QNAPs, pcs and smartphones. There was a so called ev1ction, they wouldn't let anything be taken out for a month, it was left on but when it was observed it was off but looked like someone moved the server and messed with it, signs they or someone with access to the place tried to get into it. i didn't see any QNAP alerts, but i figure if they did anything it'd be undetected by the server.. so am kind of freaked out using it.
Update2: Competition has ended. No price money will be paid out. I gave up on the files and dumped them in a separate drive. Only nostalgia was lost. Update: I finally got Qnap to restore the landing page and got my BTC address and the sum. Ironically the ransom note included a tool to retrieve the BTC address and sum. I have no idea why they didn't just give me that. I included a copy of the tools in the drobox. I got hit about a year ago also. Exact same story. I had actually turned my NAS off for about 4 months because it was archive family photos and Video's. I have backup of 40% on my ONEDRIVE. I have not touched this QNAP hoping someone will crack the code. I also had the ransom note removed before I could get a chance to get the information. That makes me more mad than anything. QNAP was part of the hack.
I actually manage to retrieved my ransome note, but i hade to literally threaten QNAP with a lawsuit to do so. But i have desided not to pay the ransome and have copied the locked files i don't have backups of on a disk which is now a brick in my closet. if I was big enough i would have sued QNAP for ill design and improper security measurements and stop them from selling any single unit in the United States. Oh! i ended up paying the ransom and yes unlock key was sent to me after successful payment of almot 1000 bucks last year. (I wish i would keep using the stupid WD at that point)

No. Qnap will not refund any paid ransomes. And don't x your fingers that they will pay for the master key. The only hope, if you don't want to pay, is that interpol will catch them. They have cracked some keys sofare. But not mine. Check at deadbolt.responders.nu
I have completely cut of my nap nas from the internett as i have 0% faith that Qnap will prevent this from happening again. Unfortunately the only way to retrieve your files is to pay the Ransom. Don't get fooled again by scammers on sosial media who say they can unlock them for you.
Hello thank you for your video, I'm in the exact same situation. If I ever recover my loved photos and files I'm going to pay a safe cloud service storage and throw the qnap to the garbage bin for good. Please update if you ever come to a solution that doesn't involve paying the ransom. I lost very valuable data to me!

Best of luck to you. Had the same experience as you, with qnap and deadbolt. My only saving grace was that I had backed up the files using the hybrid backup software in qnap to a separate usb drive, and those backup files didn't get encrypted. So was able to do a complete restore from them. I'm now rotating backups on USBs... which is not nearly as convenient, but what must happen given that qnap is really of no help.
I have a qnap and love it however after watching these videos on the hacks I'm left wondering why people choose to continue using the picture software or don't follow the security steps outlined on the qnap TH-cam channel and others the post solutions. The got a firmware notification yesterday and patched it asap. I don't use any of the apps listed on the hack list and use notifications, security advisor and paid mcafee for there AV as the data is to important I also upgraded from the 2 bay to 16 however I get that's overkill for most users however if the data is that important why use a 5/7 old device. Upgrade and get piece of mind as best you can. You find the money for alcohol, women and tabaco, etc but not to protect your data. Each to there but if I watch and read info on devices and software versions that get hacked I changed and protect. Simple logic. If your front door was featured on crime watch as easy to break into would you keep or change it.??? If you know the answer good for you
@@tinktoy3286 the amount of individuals using the app and the issues they experience. Common sense stop using the app it's well documented to be an issues for years. If your are following good for you however if your not learn quick and fix. This is the way. However there is no documentation on the app hack. You expect qnap to announce its got a exploit in the documentation and still expect you to use it. That's a lawsuit

Yes. Qnaps malware remover removed the malware. But you're left with alot of locked files.

We should hire a lawyer and do a classaction suit. In my case I had a seperate back up on a second qnap that was behind a firewall so I got my files.
Problem is... so many Nationalities. I have no ideer how to go about that. @legaleagle maybe?
