  • Here is the new President Randy FCC Handheld OR Mobile CB radio, thanks to President Electronics for sending it to me. I have always been a user of CB radios and this little gem is officially the CB radio for my future off-road gas powered golf cart. If you are a ham operator and think that a CB radio is a lesser mode of operation, please just unsubscribe and move along. I make tons of contacts on 11 meters every single day and this is the perfect "gateway drug" for younger generations to get into radio as an affordable start into RF communications.

I grew up in the 60's when you needed an FCC license (KBX-3831). This hobby hooked me into ham radio (K5FT) and now at 70 years young my wife and I travel in our motorhome. Yes I have a UHF/VHF amateur radio on board but I am adding CB since there are so many on the road and I rarely hear anyone on 144 mhz call outs. Come on you folks in the amateur radio hobby, CB is no different from your pocket radio (cell phone) and deserves a place in your rig since it is all about communications. Thanks for a great review - yes I bought one.

DUDE! I used to own a pair of Realistic handheld CB radios from Radioshack - they could only do 3 channels and you needed to buy crystals to plug in to select the 3 channels. The memories I used to have with those!! That one is so much better :D

Eric, your boy Landon is awesome! Please cherish the age he is now. He is old enough to largely tend to his own needs, this age is very curious and fun, and they don’t yet think parents are idiots.

Interesting review. I'm old enough to remember when CB was all the rage. They need to include a much longer telescopic whip with this. I never had kids but I did have a very special friendship with my nephew when he was Landon's age and younger. He grew up and faded away. But he's happily married now with two young boys of his own. 😊👍

Nice review, interesting radio. There are still CB HT's being made, Amazon shows Cobra, Uniden, and Midland units. As far as I can see Midland is still a going concern, they have a website and make a few CB rigs, including the 75-822 HT. I own an older version of that one and it does conversion to mobile really well - the adapter that replaces the battery pack has a nice integrated split cable with a lighter adapter and SO-239. Still has the rubber duck dummy load, but it's on a BNC, so easy enough to change to a full-length telescoping whip. Six AA batteries, extra battery pack housings are available, and it gets weather channels. Just another alternative. President looks pretty nice though, but for those that want options, they're out there still. 73

That would be handy in a gravel yard, job site etc.
I've never found hand held CBs to perform well due to the compromised antenna of course but they generally have better front ends than mobile units. However, when you plug your portable into a good mobile or base antenna they perform wonderfully.

I used to have a President CB Walkie Talkie in the mid 80's. It only got 6 channels, and you needed Crystals to set the channels. I was around 10, and my brother and I both got one. We thought they were the bomb. My dad even bought us magnet antenna's so we could use them in the car on road trips. I am interested in one of these handheld CB's, and maybe I can get my son interested as well before he gets to old that he thinks that they are uncool. Thank you for your video, I really enjoyed it.

@@QRP700 I have the 2990, I was trying to peak and tune the radio from the internals, and the screw that you turn to give more output disintegrated like dirt. The radio was definitely damaged from atmospheric conditions. Reason I tried peaking and tuning was because prior doing so, I couldn’t put out enough power, the radio was programmed 2W stock for SSB and I was trying to make it 4W. I managed to get more RF gain but I can’t get out for nothing.

    • @PedroskiClimb
      @PedroskiClimb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@rd._874 do you know what you're doing when mucking about with trimmer pots? And you realise the power output on SSB is specified as 4W PEP. The average power that you'd measure what a normal power meter, even at max modulation with speech compression will only be about half of the specified SSB PEP of 4W.
Your twiddling is probably what killed your radio!

years back they were AR American Radio, they had Uniden boards and then changed the name to Uniden, the President. Andrew J, Grant, Dewight D, Jackson ....... Anyway, I am looking for a new outlet, A couple of years ago I started up again after 30+ years. The first place I went to was HRO, over the first 18-24 months I spent over 10k with them, 8 months ago I ordered 20 pl259 w/176 reducers. I bought good stuff seeing they were going to be outside, however when they came in I never see such crap, the threads on the sleeves were too short stopping it from screwing to a so239, and on some, the thread where the 176 went was wrong/non-standard so the 176's would not screw in. Seeing my room was still in build mode I was ready to use them for another few weeks and this was when I found the problem when it was time to hook up the coax to the through-wall. I called them and after over 6 months of talking, I was told to pound sand. Never again. So I am looking for a good honest supplier/outlet

Any idea if this can be expanded for uppers and lowers? We use the midland 75-822 for work for that reason but have been looking for a more durable option. Know a lot of guys with our company would love this if so. We have lead drivers going through 3 or 4 midlands a year because they just don’t hold up all that well in the conditions we have to use them.

Is this a good option for slip seat trucking? I've made a slip seat box before with a stereo and a General Lee 2 way but dont feel like messing with it. Are hand held any good? How far out do they get, I don't need much really. A mile or two would do.

What is the capacity of the battery? Would've been great if it came with swappable batteries like a modern ht and a telescopic whip instead of the ducky...one can wish. I own a Lincoln ii+ and a McKinley and like them both.

Does the antenna come with the radio or does that have to be paid for separately?

I am hesitant to buy an AM-only CB at this point. Though I guess it will be fine for years.

I’m on AM every day plenty of people on there but I think AM is better for local information on the highway than anything else. SSB is for dx
