    Was able to get a bottle anytime I wanted from around 2008 to 2011 in a Northern VA ABC store near Herndon for a tad under $110 a bottle. Probably have had about 10 to 12 bottles overall. Was always a choice between a great 15 to 20 year Scotch or this Bourbon. It became popular and slowly impossible to get. I think my last bottle was in 2014 where I got on the lottery list and received a call that my name was drawn. Always thought it was all about its smoothness for me, went down easy, reminded me of rock candy. Not the best tasting bourbon, but really mellow and smooth. For me, it does not live up to the current hype, but it is a good Bourbon and was worth the $100 price tag. Cheers to you guys for an honest review.

    i had this alongside the 15 and some other unicorns and I also did a wow on the nose. Interestingly, I was once in a talk with Jimmy Russel and he chatted a little bit on how he felt about oak and age. His view is that 14 years is about the sweet spot for aging before the oak either goes neutral or in some cases starts to take over the balance. Pretty interesting stuff.

    Rating is spot-on. I had the 2014 and remember telling the bartender "if I was in a nice bar in KY, and asked for a smooth bourbon, I would expect it to be like the Pappy 20". Nothing extraordinary about it besides the secondary price.

    Great review guys. I assume this is a 2018 bottling? I've had a 2018 23 and was very disappointed, whereas I've had other 23s and were blown away. Maybe 2018 was an off vintage. I have a 2016 20yr and loved it, but lots of batch variation IMO.

    Bias is a potent force. I'll bet my left nut that if this was blind, the scores would be lower. Henceforth, any bourbon that you guys try that is over $80 should be selected by your "producer" and you should taste it blind. It's the only way to get truly accurate scoring. Also, it would be fun to see your reactions upon the reveal.

    On this episode of the Burp-un-guild... Jules and Ben mix things up. Sir Dillon makes an appearance and says "stewed fruit". Dutch's nose experiences a miracle. What would the scores have been if NONE of you knew what you were tasting? I think if I ever get the chance to buy one I will go with the 15 yr. Thanks for a "shocking" episode guys. Sir Pimp Daddy Dillon! - Love it! Seems like Dutch and Dillon continue to provide good insight.
    Ben - Seems disingenuous...like he's just pandering to the trolls and haters by purposely scoring it low. Same score as barely-4-year old EWBIB? JB Repeal? LAZY-F-ing-River? Give me a break. Sure, this is waaaay overhyped but ben's reasoning is ridiculous.

    I had the opportunity to drink a glass of Pappy 23 at my uncle's house on Christmas eve a few years ago. He waited until everyone else left and it was only him, my dad and me. They poured me a glass with 1 large ice cube inside. They taught me the "Kentucky chew". To smell it first then take a drink and hold it on your tongue. It was the best whiskey I've ever had! My dad also had a few bottles of Old Rip Van Winkle 12 year at his house we drank a few times.

    I agree with Ben's score. I drank a "Pappy's Flight" at OBC Kitchen in Lexington, KY about a month ago. The flight consisted of ORVW 10 year, VW Lot B, and the 20 year Pappy. By far, the Lot B is the best of those three. Don't get me wrong, I would buy any bottle of Pappy's or VW line at retail or slightly over, but would prefer to buy the Lot B over the three I have tasted.

    I think this bottle is much better after it had been open for a week or so. It was very oaky upon opening, too much so, in my opinion. A week or so later that heavy oak scent had dissipated some what and the flavor became much more enjoyable.

  • @LeoOrtega144
    @LeoOrtega144 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Honestly, I think most bourbons over 15 years old have gone pass the sweet point and take on too much of the wood/oak flavors. I believe most distillers will blend newer stuff with the old to combat strong wood flavors. With bourbon, older doesn't necessarily translate to better tasting bourbon. Its not scotch.

    • @darkpatches
      @darkpatches 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll pile on. I've had a bottle of PVW 20 and the nose is world class. The palate and finish, however, were unpleasantly overwhelmed with bitter oak. The nose was worth the 2014 $120 MSRP, but I wouldn't pay $30 to drink it. Maybe it was the 2014 vintage. OTOH, Van Winkle 10, 12 and 15 all day long. Wonderful stuff.

    Pappy is great bourbon, but there are $50 and $60 bottles right now that are as good or better. When I started drinking bourbon 25 years ago, Pappy was easily found sitting on liquor store shelves. This is why so many people own unopened bottles of Pappy...they know that when they open and taste it, they'll be disappointed for the price they paid.
