Thank you for this wonderful journey. I am Jew but I don't care if Wagner was antisemite. This is just history now. In fact, his racism does not made Wagner a bad composer, everybody recognized how wonderful music composer He was.

A genius with a profound heart and a sublime style of composition yet Wagner wrote that Jewish music is bereft of all expression, characterized by coldness and indifference, triviality and nonsense. The Jew, he claimed, has no true passion to impel him to artistic creation. The Jewish composer, according to Wagner, makes a confused heap of the forms and styles of all ages and masters. To admit a Jew into the world of art results in pernicious consequences. In Deutsche Kunst und Deutsche Politik, Wagner spoke of the "harmful influence of Jewry on the morality of the nation," adding that the subversive power of Jewry stands in contrast to the German psyche. -A very complex mind but I’d rather simply listen to Tristan and Isolde and forget the regrettable remarks he made.

Excellent documentary. I remember reading in Tommy Lascelles book about what his father said about Wagner,"Wagner? I could make as good music by slamming my bedroom door!" Which had me on the floor.

Taking the dark politics from Wagner as a frankly unlikable individual, one must concede he left the world a towering musical legacy abounding with originality. Stephen Fry explores the many aspects of this flawed genius with great erudition.
❤️TEMPUS reminds me of the classic jazz that I could get from the MOSAIC record label that had great depth. It is visual and VERY interesting. Here is what I got starting research of that other composure mentioned in this video. WIKI.. “ Giacomo Meyerbeer (born Jakob Liebmann Meyer Beer; 5 September 1791 - 2 May 1864) was a German opera composer, "the most frequently performed opera composer during the nineteenth century, linking Mozart and Wagner". With his 1831 opera Robert le diable and its successors, he gave the genre of grand opera 'decisive character'.[2] Meyerbeer's grand opera style was achieved by his merging of German orchestra style with Italian vocal tradition. These were employed in the context of sensational and melodramatic libretti created by Eugène Scribe and were enhanced by the up-to-date theatre technology of the Paris Opéra. They set a standard which helped to maintain Paris as the opera capital of the nineteenth century.”

Having listened to Brian Eno before he turned out to be an anti-semite, I kept listening. I mean, what's the point... But finding out that Wagner was a Jew hater actually kept me from entering his world.

But Wagner actually was part of an anti-semitic scene even back in the day. The way he talks about being "German" perfectly connects to Hitler.
Anti semithism was a transversal political position in the 19th century in pretty much the whole of Europe and for many (as Wagner) it was linked to the capital. Of course they were absolutely wrong, but anti-semithism presented in different ways both in the 19th century and in the 20th century.
Feeling "german" is another discussion and topic though. If in many aspects Hitler has an approach to Wagner's "feeling german", the historical context is different and not relatable since during most of Wagner's life Germany didn't exist yet and was a subject in construction. Hitler experienced an already existing empire in decadence after I WW.
Plus, during his life, Wagner changed many times of political and filosofic opinions and was a deeply contradictory character.
There are connections indeed between Hitler and Wagner-Nietzsche though, but not as superficial as that. Theodor Adorno and Georg Lukacs have some interesting opinions about that ;)
Eva Wagner-Pasquier could barely stand Stephen Fry. I hope it was his smarminess and not his Jewishness. He is one of my heroes, and yet sometimes I think he lays it on pretty thick. Great documentary!
When I started listening to classical music, I stayed away from Wagner for the longest time because of his anti-Semitism and the Nazi association with his music. Also I'm not really into opera. But I love the overtures. He's an amazing composer.
I have enjoyed seeing aspects of productions that audiences don't usually see. I have been on a tour of the theatre, and have actually stood on the conductors podium in the pit - a great experience. I usually enjoy listening to Stephen Fry, however, most of the time his obsequious behaviour throughout the documentary is almost embarrassing to witness; Eva Wagner-Pasquier is quite dismissive of some of his comments. Nevertheless, it is an interesting documentary. The additional scenes are very good.
I think Stephen Fry combines a personal shyness with a willingness to please, true curiosity, GREAT enthusiasm, good manners. I can see that to some it may come across as obsequiousness, but not to me -- I see his intentions as entirely good.
Michael Jackson, R. Kelly and Richard Wagner - despicable people who produced wonderful music.

Wagner: 15 minutes of lovely Orchestral music, spoiled by 4 Hours of incomprehensible Operatic warblings! Stephen I'm surprised, given your Jewish provenance!
Start with an easy one -- the Liebestod in Tristan. I realise Wagner can be an acquired taste, but acquiring it will in the end pay off with the most glorious musical experience. And Stephen Fry, an uber-mensch if ever there was one, addresses the whole issue of anti-Semitism and the Hitler associations throughout the documentary.
0:45 fry has Jewish roots and his family perished in the nazi death camps and his hero is Wagner. Strange association

… at 22:00 the discussion about antisemitic behavior is very engaging for me. I teach guests at the second oldest Synagogue with continuous service in the New World (St. Thomas US Virgin Islands). I always refer to this time period because our history begins in 1796 but emerges in 1833 when we finished constructing the building people come to see. We had economic growth of this with North American trade on sailing ships perfectly situated on this particular Caribbean island. It was fueled by Reformist thinking under Danish rule. Jews were tolerated and encouraged here during that opulent era. Mendelssohn’s family were “conversos” (“New Christians”) and he was employed by a Church. I never heard the other name but very enlightening. Meyerbeer.. thanks . I’ll look it up. THANKS! see you next comment. 🛺….
