Covid has also had a massive impact on education because of the gaps from lockdown, and because younger kids missed out on a lot of socialization they struggle with being in school at all

definite. the impact of that across the board on education (from the actual content learning and socialization learning) is drastic

As a high school teacher students still have to use calculators and they still play modded Mario on them. Schools are still against cell phones. They do have their own laptops now but they can't always use them.

On the calculator conversation, the idea of using your phone as a calculator is like using a knife to cut a pineapple vs a pineapple slicer. As a specialized tool for mathematics the calculator is much faster to use and I can speak to how useful it is in a stem based career.

Another big group against highspeed rail is airlines
Because the biggest indicator of highspeed rail's benefit is how active the air corridor is, so theyre often some of the biggest opponents

Ah, dialects and languages are very diverse in Indonesia. Most of you probably aware about Jakarta and Bali. But, there are so many islands in Indonesia, like Sumatra, Papua, Borneo and Celebes (with thousands of smaller islands). Those islands contain many tribes (yes, tribes, with totally different languages), and even in same tribe in an island, the custom and dialects are so different. That's why in national event, you can encounter many dialects (because we spoke Indonesian as the main language), and playing "guess where they come from?" is actually pretty fun here!

You guys actually just reminded me of a joke I heard, I'll put it here:
So I decided to move to Australia and the Immigration Officer asked me "Do you have a criminal record?" And I said "No, is that still required?"

Elementary teacher here! “New Math” was created to ensure students weren’t just memorizing numbers and equations, but actually understanding the concept behind that math from the start. For example, when teaching multiplication, we start with repeated addition (ex. 2x3 is solved as 2+2+2) because a kid will know how to add up already, then move to the group model (ex. 2x3 is 2 groups of 3) to show how math can be used in real life, and end with rote multiplication like we grew up with. This helps them use prior knowledge to learn a new concept and then move into real world usage before being expected to “master” the subject. It also gives students more methods to solve a problem in case one doesn’t click or they aren’t good at memorization.

I’m the same age as y’all (literally within 2 weeks of Ash’s b-day I recently found out) and your discussion today was so refreshing. All I can say about being the last generation without smart phones and all that is that I’m SO GLAD we never had social media in high school.

measuring distance where I live is done, amongst people, in time as well. It is so much easier to tell how long it takes to travel from a to b than saying it is x amount of miles or kilometres.
Especially since where I live the roads might be bad which makes measuring things in time it takes travel so much better and more reliable way of measuring.

10:40 While I'm not going to reveal my age, when I was in middle school we were required to use TI-84 graphing calculators, and you were able to download games on them (some students even snuck games onto some of the school-owned TI-84s). I even got my own TI-84, but never really had time to download games

20:04 I don't know exactly about Nevada but Utah(or at least where I'm from) has a sort of mixed British/American accent that seems more like the basic American accent but mainly changes with certain words or names(Ie Dalton or waltz) where the "T" sound kinda merges with the sound of the surrounding consonants until it sounds almost like you aren't pronouncing them

    • @Ryoneln
      @Ryoneln ปีที่แล้ว

though, it's worse for me because I come from that area and my mother is from England so it's even more noticeable for me than most common people in that area because I partially adapted her natural English accent and that didn't merge well so I ended up with a kind of midway between both accents on that front

Up until the 2010's, my country was 10 years behind so even tho it's up-to-date now. As a gen Z, i grew up watching the internet show up and flip phones and cassettes and more like many millenials in other countries.
Plus as someone with parents in their 60's, they raised me with 70/80's tech too like dial up phones, walkmans, vinyls and more. So i have such a weird experience compared to other gen Z and end up relating so much more to millenials.

i agree with your point on how teachers teach us, in maths they make us do equations even when we already have the answer. I find half the time they making us do the equations makes it make less sense to me because im having to think about lots of other things instead of just the answer. They even agree that their is no need to do the equations but still say we need to do it

The measuing distance in time is something I actually thought about today and got to joke with my father 😂. We drove to a different state to do somethings and it is 3 hours one way but a 150 miles in a real distance. Back when we lived in California, driving to work in Burbank whivh was 60-75 miles away from our home then toon over 3 hours. 😂 It was a wold thought to have that

I feel like the internet discussion in this video expands on my comment from yesterday about feeling like a baby compared to you even though I'm 27. Because the first time I ever used internet was in 2006 when I was 10. It was a bit late even by my country's standards but it was still a time when people just started getting internet at home. And my experience on the internet was that much more limited by the fact, that at the time I didn't really speak English. But I do have my own nostalgic memories from back then.

I was born in 1994, so my childhood also revolves around the birth of internet (I started using PC when the connection is dial-up). Then, I proceeded to know about GBA emulator, then creep up to PS1 and NDS. Oh gosh, it's like a piece of heaven fall into earth. I was born in a restrictive Christian family (yes, Indonesia is not a purely Moslem country. It's just that many of the higher ups and governments are Moslem, due to centralization), and you know that time where "Pokemon is a demonic game! So, I won't let my kids play it!" Yeah, I got that. Emulator is my first touch on Pokemon series (started with Pokemon Crystal and my beloved Totodile).
Okay, about education. As you guys probably know, I'm a medical doctor. I got into the college due to math, since math is actually not about memorizing, but about intuition to use which formula for which problem. So, I don't really do much brain work. Too bad in medical school, it's about memorizing. Maybe except dosage and IV fluid speed. But I still have fun. I do part time by teaching math, and don't need to bust out extra brain space because my way to do math.

THE FREAK T89 CALCULATOR HACKS. I remember being in awe of what another kid had on his. This episode made me google so much early 2000s stuff haha. I remember my first cell phone had a 'connect to the internet' button that you DID NOT WANT TO CLICK because if it did manage to connect your parents would get charged on the phone bill.

Then he doesn't build the hyperloop. And the tax payers are screwed over again.
