    If you didn’t watch the end credits:
    Essentially the four survivors make it to the island they believe will be uninhabited as they believe zombies can’t swim. However, when they arrive and dock the boat (which by the way they find a zombified severed head in a cooler on the boat) they quickly find out that the island isn’t so uninhabited after all. It’s cuts off the film (which the ending credits are shot from the perspective of a video camera) and it’s suggested our survivors are no longer surviving.
    At least, that’s how it went from memory. Anyone is welcome to correct me.

      They find a small boat on their way to the island and on the boat is a cooler with a zombie in it. When they get to the island the dog jumps out and runs into the trees. You can hear the dog start barking, then a horde of zombies came out of the trees and you see them trying to run back to the boat.

      And it really is a misnomer that post-credit sequences are somehow this modern phenomenon that’s only come about in the past decade or whatever. They’ve been around for MUCH longer than that, just not as widely used/copied.
      I honestly don’t even feel like a movie is finished or that I’ve seen the entire film unless I’ve sat through at least the majority of its credits sequence. Somehow I feel like that comment dates me. 😂

    I would highly recommend not setting zombies on fire, unless you can corral them or have them fall in a pit. If they're truly undead, not technically still a living being like 28 days and the Last of Us, they don't feel pain and will still keep coming at you until their bodies give out from the fire or their brains boil. Zombies are bad already, a flaming zombie is worse. Also it can set the area you're in on fire too and lead to more problems.

    I normally oppose remakes on general principle, but this one truly surprised my friends and I. We saw it in the theater and loved it! Aside from the basic premise of hiding from zombies in a mall, it's an entirely different movie than the original. The "Down With The Sickness" and celebrity sniper sequences were hilarious. Definitely check out the original, though. It's essential horror viewing.

    • @katakovacs2066
      @katakovacs2066 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eh i liked it too but for a remake it's really using a lot of the same scenes from the original and not just the mall: the old lady who became a zombie, the guy from the other side from the street, the chainsaw kill, CJ's death, the ending with the island of zombies etc..

    To me, the most representative scene of the movie is when everyone's settled into the mall, and we've just gotten a really comfortable grasp on who everyone is...and then suddenly we're given a literal truckload of new characters, like Snyder was worried the ones he already had couldn't be good enough to carry a whole film.

  • @ApesAmongUs
    @ApesAmongUs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    The 70's one is weird. It's basically a comedy at times. A better movie, but not really similar to this one in any meaningful way beyond "there's a mall".

    • @dnllrnt
      @dnllrnt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I've watched the original more than the remake. Better character arcs seeing as how there's only 4 people as opposed to nearly a dozen. They learn how to move quietly through the mall before clearing it out, they plan ahead with making a fake wall in the event it's overrun, learn how to fly the helicopter and my favorite piece: they learn to shoot. They go months before nailing headshots. In the remake, everyone's nailing headshots with zero effort.
      It's the little things.

    I think they were trying to write characters that didn’t know they were in a zombie movie. With that in mind, most of the decisions made by those characters make a bit more sense. These were traumatized people who were completely disoriented and confused by the events they were witnessing and they were making decisions based on extremely limited information. So I always cut them some slack on some of their missteps.

    I've always felt that the expectations placed on survivors of zombie outbreaks in movies are way too high. Many viewers are wondering "Hey, why doesn't he run away, why doesn't she hide, why don't they do this or that or that?!" I simply claim that the end of the world as we knew it up to then and that in just a few days or even hours put the viewer in a massive state of shock. You have to cope with such a development first. If you've somehow managed to survive long enough to understand what actually happened, you can begin to approach the situation in a logical and practical way.

    It's a shame you skipped the end credit scenes as they wrap up the movie nicely (but depressingly). With regards to the original, you'll hear purists say it's a much better movie, but it's essentially a B-Movie that was praised for its originality and at the time groundbreaking special effects. It's not faultless though as it has relatively wooden acting and rather clunky action scenes, and was made when zombie apocalypse movies were a completely unique idea, which was a big part of its appeal. These days with an oversaturated market for zombie stuff, the original doesn't really hold up as well, as it's been done to death.

If you can secure one area, then you can slowly expand that safe area over time, send people out on supply runs, and gain access to more resources.

    The army guy on the news and the hell preaching pastor were both in the original dawn, the helicopter flying overhead as Anna flees her house is the helicopter driven by Steve in the original and one of the shops in the mall is named after the actress that was in the original too. Snyder added these little things as a nod to the original cast (cameo from Tom savini too). It's a real shame you missed the end credits but without them it's more optimistic as end credits are not lol

  • @Damiana_Dimock
    @Damiana_Dimock 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Since it’s difficult to get the original-it’s not usually streaming-most people haven’t seen it, so it will certainly come in w/ fewer votes on a poll. Also, if you’re more interested in watching an action-packed zombie film then you’re more likely to pick this film.
    Because of that it is absolutely far more in-line with the kinds of films y’all have been sticking with in the genre.
    However, the original is more of a critique of the media, racism, and consumer culture than this version, it does do a few things correct in terms of Horror film etiquette: If you’re making a remake/reboot/sequel/requel in good faith, you bring on board actors from past films, (Tom Savini, one of the great special effects artists-give him a follow on Instagram!-has a cameo in this film, and he also played one of the bikers in the original, as well as worked the effects. Ken Foree, one of the leads in the original film, (he played a cop,) also has a cameo in this film as the televangelist.)
    In the original Dead trilogy by George A. Romero, the each film is supposed to take place immediately after the previous film, (despite nearly a ten year gap between each.) This film is pretty much a stand-alone film. It’s not a bad film, I still gave it a 6/10 on IMDB & a 3/5 on Letterboxd.
    Land of the Dead is a fine film, it’s the 4th Romero Dead movie, (gotta specify that now, when he was alive “Of The Dead” was his TM,) and it also features a similar “bus.” Diary of the Dead is not horrible but I think I rated Zombie Spring Breakers (aka. Ibiza Undead) higher.
    This film is probably best known for the intro sequence-neck bite, the drive-through-the-neighborhood, & Johnny Cash song with the opening credits, (and maybe the pregnant lady.)
    I will say, nice Alien 4-esque moment I forgot about until I saw it in this reaction.
    If you only know James Gunn from Guardians Of The Galaxy, you need to check out his pre-Marvel/pre-big budget films: His time at Troma is typified by Tromeo & Juliet (1996,) then he’s known for Horror/Sci-Fi film Slither (2006,) and of course his take on the Kick-Ass style of superhero film, Super (2010.) That is the James Gunn who made an off-color joke that he ended up apologizing for only to have a conservative grifter and total d-bag dig that joke back up after Guardians 1 came out prompting Marvel/Disney to knee-jerk fire him, pushing Gunn to get scooped up by DC for the Suicide Squad film, only for Marvel/Disney to realize they messed up and rehired him for the subsequent Guardians films.
    The other thing I love about this film is that the dad from Modern Family, Ty Burrell, gets to show off his range. Matt Frewer also shows up, he’s an awesome actor that was in Max Headroom (1985/1987-1988,) he played Trashcan Man in the first The Stand miniseries from 1994, which I highly recommend, and then later in the ‘00s shows up in Synder’s The Watchmen as Moloch.
    Aside from how well the film was shot and the Snyder aesthetic we see born here, that’s about all I really dig about the film.
    What were the characters names again might’ve been one of the best unintentional, one-line reviews. BTW, lol.
    Also, did y’all watch the post-credit scenes? And did you think that really changes the meaning or tone of the film?

      Dead Entertainment’s headline from 2018 is one of the best I’ve seen: Unhinged Rights Holder Will Destroy Dawn of the Dead Unless His Demands Are Met.

    I saw the original Dawn of the Dead (1978) a few years later at a midnight screening at a theater deep inside of a shopping mall. My family had gone on vacation and I had declined to go because of a job. So this very scary movie ended and everyone stood up and started to leave the theater. The lights in the theater were bright compared to the dark of the screening. Then e walked into the theater lobby and through the mall to the parking lot. The mall was empty but for this stumbling crowd. We walked past several things we saw in the movie like shops, photo booth and blood pressure machine. Once we got outside we were plunged into darkness again and the crowd stumbled towards their cars. As I approached my car and started to pull out my keys, someone in the crowd let out a long low zombie moan. I pulled my keys out, but dropped them when I heard the moan. I got into my car as quickly as I could and drove home to an empty house. I was looking over my shoulders for the rest of the night. This remake is great, but I love the original. I actually got to meet and work with George Romero on a film he directed with his son's film-making class here in Florida. He was a very nice man.

    Words of advice: Never not watch the end of the credits for any movie.
    You missed the mid-credit scenes AND the end-credit scene.
    Also... starting with X-Men: The Last Stand, start watching the post-credit scenes of the X-Men movies as well. Most of the X-Men films going forward either have post-credit or mid-credit scenes.
    That said... originally there was a subplot with zombie dogs that chase the main dog, but if I remember correctly they determined it would be too complicated to film, so it never was completed.

    When it came to getting him food, it was dumb to use the dog. This would have been my way of doing it:
    After they met him on the 1st day, they should have gone to the sporting goods store in the mall and looked for a compound bow and arrows. Then get a light fishing line. Then tie it to the arrow and shoot the arrow across to him.
    Then you tie your end of the line to a thin rope and a fishing line. A thin rope is so that the fishing line can handle the weight of it easily. Then he can pull the rope over to himself. If needed, you can then tie a heavier rope onto the thin one and have him pull it over.
    Once you have a heavy enough rope, you can either get a pully from the hardware store, or a carabiner from the sporting goods store, and hook it to the rope. Hook a bucket or basket to the pully or carabiner. Tie the end of the fishing line that he pulled over with the 1st rope to that and another line to the other side of it.
    Now, you can load it with food and he can pull it over to himself on the rope between you. Then he can load ammunition and/or guns into it and you can pull it back to yourself. Now, you can both survive that way as long as you need to, while you get the bus ready and you won't need to be in a rush. Which, as we saw, causes mistakes to happen.
    Once both you and him are ready, go get him and get out of town. You're leaving as soon as you want to, with as much food as you have available, as many weapons as you need, and as much ammunition as you can take. But that way of doing it would be the smart way and we can't have that in an action/horror movie.
    Personally, I wouldn't have gone to a mall in the 1st place. My choice would have been a Walmart. There you have limited entrances that you can block up, an area for vehicles to pull in without exposing the interior to danger, all the food and water you could need for at least months for dozens of people, and guns and ammunition. You also have camping supplies for light and cooking, comfortable places to sleep, and some have generators that could be used to keep the refrigerators and freezers of food good for quite a while. You can put solar panels on the roof with batteries from the automotive section to give you electricity to supplement any generators.
    There are many more reasons to go to a Walmart, but this post is a bit long as it is.
