I'm absolutely convinced the only reason Hank doesn't want Walt to be Heisenberg is because he thinks of Walt as a lesser being. It's extremely obvious in almost all their early interactions and it was his narcissism that caused him to not be entertain the notion that Walt was Heisenberg. If Walt is going to be Heisenberg, Hank will have to accept the fact that Walt's a match for him, maybe more, and that would be a blow to his cop pride. Hank is not a good person. He's an arrogant dick convinced that the things the DEA does are good (which would require being morally blind in the first place).

The amusing thing is Hank got his current job because his former superior failed to realize Gus was a drug kingpin despite being friends for years.
The funny part was that Hank was already way more guilty than Merkert was of mishandling a case. Merkert was specifically dismissed because the ties to Gus Fring were not taken seriously. Hank dropped the ball early in the first season, he had Walt cornered and he completely missed him.
When they found the gas mask, they were able to quickly trace it back to Walt's school and confirm 2 gas masks were currently missing in the inventory as well as a significant amount of other equipment. So of course they logically deduced that the equipment was stolen and presumed the thief is connected to the new ultra pure meth and the two missing drug dealers. It's established that only Walt and the Janitor have keys to the lab supplies room. They also agree it's possible a student could have swiped the keys.
What they never did was actually consider Walt to be a suspect for even a moment. Here we have this mysterious meth that is purer than any of the DEA have seen before by a large margin. They already confirmed that the gas mask was used in a cook that yielded the exact same meth they found, so the cook was local. The mask was traced back to the school to a room where only of the only people who has access to it is a Nobel peace prize winner chemistry genius whom Hank already knows has cancer and is financially struggling.
    Nope, nothing suspicious here.

TheIrishEnigma I think Hank probably had some subconscious suspicion that he didn't want to consider. I mean, who would want to even think to accuse their brother in law with lung cancer? But as the series goes on I think Hank secretly considers this to me more of a possibility, which culiminates with the 'Walt Whitman' scene when he goes through all the possibilities of what 'W.W' could stand for. Maybe jokingly at first, but in that moment I think Hank is seriously considering Walt a suspect because of the mounting evidence suggesting someone of his likeness.
Hank might not be quick to spot the obvious, but he's not an idiot. Which is why I don't see this realisation as some kind of out-of-the-blue revelation he never saw coming. He probably saw it coming; he just didn't want to admit it to himself.

Here’s what I think happened based on the order of the pictures shown:
Hank so far only had the book and it’s annotation as evidence, he already corroborated that it was most likely gale who wrote the message, so he went looking for more evidence.
He knew he was connected to gale, his only lead so far, so he had to be connected to Gus fring as well, so he started looking around that but he couldn’t find anything. Then, he remembered tuco, and pinkman, whom he still believed was connected to tuco’s death. He probably remembered that Walt disappeared just as gonzo’s corpse was found and tuco left his headquarters before they were raided, and pinkman’s car was found at tuco’s desert house. The next lead was tuco’s uncle, who killed Gus fring with a bomb, so he now knew of two possible connections Walt had to Gus (via gale) and tuco (via pinkman) which would connect him to tuco’s uncle and the eventual bomb that killed Gus. Next is the gas mask, which came from Walt’s high school, and that was found just as krazy-8 disappeared and just before blue meth started appearing on the streets. This leads to the next big lead, the methylamine heist. Despite not having any way of knowing it was Walt, hank probably started noticing similarities of movement with Walt and the man from the video, adding to his growing suspicion.
And of course, the final lead, the drawing (probably seized from the temple of saint death the twins left it in, or other cartel related property, which would be another direct lead to the Salamanca family, the cartel and fring) who under closed examination, looked eerily similar to Walt. That, added to all the other clues (and stuff like Walt appearing just as badger was going to give them Heisenberg, the phone call just as he was getting to the RV (and pinkman)) probably lead him to the conclusion that Walt was Heisenberg.

@@sl_ipper Yep. Walter was really close to adjusting to the situation, respecting Gus, and then just settling down and cooking. Those dealers killing kids would have led the cops to Gus eventually; they were a security risk. Valuing them over Walter was just stupid.

I love this. Imagine getting a drama bomb like that and realising the mystery that’s been perplexing you for over a year, every day, has been smiling at you over the dinner table the whole time. The man you shed tears for. I don’t know how people root for Walt. He’s an asshole to me from like episode 3. Toxic in personality, arrogant, aloof. He only stopped being the mild family man when he realised he had it in him to do heinous, remarkable things and still sleep at night. The worse the things he did, the more powerful he became as be understood himself a little more with each act. Unfortunately, his ego outgrew his ability. And here we are, a man who’s obsession and tenacity grew along side walt’s power. Except he doesn’t have the weakness of arrogance. He’s working out of partially principle, because he hates criminals, and partly spite and need for vindication. He’s found the monster. Now all that’s left is to trap it and snuff it.

Once you watch the whole show, you realize Walt was an egotistical narcissist from the very first episode and you lose any respect at all for him. In the very first episode Elliot and Gretchen, his old college friends, offer him a good job with great benefits and payments for his cancer treatment. Walt could have swallowed his pride and simply said "Oh, gosh Elliot, that's so kind of you. I don't know what to say... thank you. I accept!" and they all would have lived happily ever after.
But nope. Walt's ego couldn't allow anyone else to help he. He had to do it all by himself. All through the show Walt has multiple opportunities to quit while he's ahead. He could have cooked for Gus, taught Gale his recipe, and be set for life, for example. Mike says it himself at the very end.
"You just had to blow it up! You and your pride and your ego. You just had to be the man. If you'd have done your job, known your place, we'd all be fine right now!"

@@Rockhard1492To be fair, the reason that things went sour between Walt and Gus was Walt killing those 2 dealers to save Jesse. That's when Gus realized he was too much of a loose cannon and tried to replace him with Gale and later Jesse. Amusingly, for once Walt's compassion fucked everything up lol. After that, killing Gale and Gus was just self preservation. Somehow Mike forgot that.

@@fascistlobsterexactly. the reason Walt couldn't just do his job and know his place is because he couldn't help but look out for Jesse all the time and then Gus began planning his "disposal"

@@erakattack It was always about control with Walt. He didn't want to be working *for* Gus, he wanted to be working *with* Gus but that situation reminded him of the reality - he was not a partner, he was just the chemist making drugs for the real leader who called the shots.
When he killed those dealers he did it as much for Jesse as for his own ego.

I love how when we watch their perspective through the show, they just look like normal people and friends we know, but, in these pictures, they look like suspects and victims that emanate fear, even though we know them "personally"
