      I definitely liked that.
The rebels would probably say to the Vietnamese border patrol "It's OK! We don't want any trouble!" & then leave.
I often wonder what would've happened had that 1 leader guy been in this scene (like if he didn't get bludgeoned by the oar).
Would he have fired a shot regardless or would he have backed down?

@@Nicksolo85 well there is only one effect, if the leader is carried by his actions and opened fire on them, it will lead to a shootout with the border guards and will untimely lead to a war between their countries, as it is considered a provocation.

I love that the Vietnamese were strictly following the laws to the letter, but not the spirit. The moment the boat of obviously terrified civilians passed into their waters, they immediately turn to the rebels with the intent to kill. They knew what was going on in the adjacent country. It's heartwarming.

This film is very symbolic to what my grandparents went through, they were born in Laos and they had to abandon their village in 1975 and run into the jungle away from the cities because the Red Laotian rebels were killing everyone and beheading anyone who resist the Red revolution. They had to cross the Mekong River to Thailand to escape the massacre and genocide in Laos.

Watched this movie long ago, at that time, I didn't care about director and all. All I remember is how when the tension started its impact, the whole movie barely has any space and time for the audience to rest. This one last scene is the most intense scene, genius writing. In other scenes, the tension can be reduced by main characters hiding, tricking or fighting. But this scene, all they could do was just asking hopelessly for help. And not until they cross the border, they didn't know whether keep moving forward is a good choice. Now, I think I must look it up on who wrote this movie and who directed it. They're all amazing for making every blood cells in my veins shaking throughout the movie.
As a Vietnamese myself, I really appreciate a foreign movie making Vietnam look good and damn badass. *Wow in Owen Wilson*

They never threaten to shoot the family. They just said to turn around and that they didn't have permission to enter. Yet the Vietnamese soilders made no move to actually stopped them. The moment they passed the border the order was given to protect them instead.
I believe this is likely an order from the government to the border troops. You can't just let anyone enter but as foreigners were being killed they knew they would be escaping the country and would need protection. So diplomatics says they shouldn't get "involved" but also to provide protection to those that made it.

I love how the director delved into this scene when the Vietnamese army just shouted "Turn around the boat", because if our troops kept silent and just let the boat go into our water, the rebels would have shot this family immediately. The rebels would be dead quickly.
I feel like the leader guy (had he not been bludgeoned with that oar) would've fired regardless & then gotten a bullet (fired by a Vietnamese soldier) right through his skull & died instantly.

    • @mediumtext8038
      @mediumtext8038 ปีที่แล้ว

@@chrysecreative5575 The soldiers were having conversation toward the main character family. If they took a shot, then the border will be in alarm, which means Vietnam can consider this an attempt to invade because they fired right in the border. Which is close to what they warned after the boat entered the border. Also because of that reason, the army can open fire with the reason of self-defense and with and advantage of people and armory, they can easily wipe out those rebels without casualties. If things escalate, there might've been another liberation support from Vietnam for that country since the last time was in 1978.

When I first saw the embassy explosion and rebels killing foriegners scene in this film, I've been thinking how other countries would react to this kind of situation if there's a rebellion going on in a country against their government and foreign diplomats. Following the embassy explosion, I know the US would have a strong reaction to such a situation like this and start a war against the rebels in that country.
Because the rebels bombed the US embassy, and the entire staff there were all killed, and crippled their own government, it's possible that the US may invade that unnamed southeast asian country (It's Cambodia, but it was never mentioned in the film) and restore order to the country. Though this was never mentioned at the end, it's possible that can happen, Just like the US invaded Grenada in 1983 and Panama in 1989. Although the story of those countries are different (probably), you can tell that they restored order to those country with a new proper government.

It would 100% result in a military response from the United States. Embassies are basically seen as a section of the embassy's country within the host country. Attacking it would be seen as attacking the country itself.

Actually, just bombing the US embassy is enough to make it a good justification for a war.
An embassy is considered a “special territory” of the respective country in a foreign land. Should anything happen to that “special territory” caused by a local militia, that is considered an act of war.
