This is quite possibly one of the greatest moments I’ve ever seen in a movie. “If you shoot, we will consider this an act of war”. Fuck, that gave me chills.
Because they are showing the rebels their military show of force in case they think they are too strong for their own good also as well it is an act of war if they fire in Vietnamese territory
This film is very symbolic to what my grandparents went through, they were born in Laos and they had to abandon their village in 1975 and run into the jungle away from the cities because the Red Laotian rebels were killing everyone and beheading anyone who resist the Red revolution. They had to cross the Mekong River to Thailand to escape the massacre and genocide in Laos.
This reminds me of Pol Pots Khmer Rouge, when hunting down foreigners and the Vietnamese not allowing them into their part of the boarder. This was an act of military show of strength. These rebels knew they wouldn’t be able to contend with a real and professional army.
The people's army of Vietnam saved an entire country of Cambodia from the tyranny of Pol Polt's brutal red Khmer rouge regime, it's no surprising they would do the same to foreigners seeking protections from them.

Watched this movie long ago, at that time, I didn't care about director and all. All I remember is how when the tension started its impact, the whole movie barely has any space and time for the audience to rest. This one last scene is the most intense scene, genius writing. In other scenes, the tension can be reduced by main characters hiding, tricking or fighting. But this scene, all they could do was just asking hopelessly for help. And not until they cross the border, they didn't know whether keep moving forward is a good choice. Now, I think I must look it up on who wrote this movie and who directed it. They're all amazing for making every blood cells in my veins shaking throughout the movie. As a Vietnamese myself, I really appreciate a foreign movie making Vietnam look good and damn badass. *Wow in Owen Wilson*
This ending scene was masterful, making you think it was finally their doom Reminded me of the Rambo scene where they constantly thought they were safe through the film until things became brutal
They never threaten to shoot the family. They just said to turn around and that they didn't have permission to enter. Yet the Vietnamese soilders made no move to actually stopped them. The moment they passed the border the order was given to protect them instead. I believe this is likely an order from the government to the border troops. You can't just let anyone enter but as foreigners were being killed they knew they would be escaping the country and would need protection. So diplomatics says they shouldn't get "involved" but also to provide protection to those that made it.
It sounded like they were preparing themselves for any sneak attacks. But likely wouldnt have pulled the trigger since there was also 2 young kids and the was plea was convincing.

When I first saw the embassy explosion and rebels killing foriegners scene in this film, I've been thinking how other countries would react to this kind of situation if there's a rebellion going on in a country against their government and foreign diplomats. Following the embassy explosion, I know the US would have a strong reaction to such a situation like this and start a war against the rebels in that country. Because the rebels bombed the US embassy, and the entire staff there were all killed, and crippled their own government, it's possible that the US may invade that unnamed southeast asian country (It's Cambodia, but it was never mentioned in the film) and restore order to the country. Although the story of those countries are different (probably), you can tell that they restored order to those country with a new proper government.
It would 100% result in a military response from the United States. Embassies are basically seen as a section of the embassy's country within the host country. Attacking it would be seen as attacking the country itself.
Actually, just bombing the US embassy is enough to make it a good justification for a war. An embassy is considered a “special territory” of the respective country in a foreign land. Should anything happen to that “special territory” caused by a local militia, that is considered an act of war.
