I think of life as any organism that solves problems. Coming at this from the “purpose in biology” framework, I want to know how it works (if we can figure that out). I’m not terrified of teleology / teleonomy or what have you. In fact, I’m already sold on it. This acknowledgment doesn’t really drive to theism tho, because cancer has this agential aspect too. So it’s difficult for me to fathom how an all-knowing creator would have cancer actively flourish inside a host, only for that host to die, and then the cancer inevitably dies too (because it didn’t “realize” all its problem-solving work would lead to nothing). So no “implications” are on the line for me. I just want to know how it works. And the first thing I’d love humanity to do with that power is to “tell”cancer cells to shut down.
