HAHA, YOU NO MESS WITH LO WANG, I honestly just adore Shadow Warrior, I'm about more than half way through the game now, it's some of the most f!cking fun I've had in a bit. I haven't played the new games but I'd like to ;).
I really hate it when someone says that this game makes fun of/stereotypizes asians. The protagonist is a 60 year old, perverted ninja master with the sense of humor of a 5 year old. It's a unique, original character who stands on his own, in the sense that you'd expect someone with his skillset to be a quiet, stoic and humorless type. The new protagonist is a 30something sarcastic american-asian with no definitive personality traits. I'd say the original Lo Wang is way more authentic and real than the new Lo Wang. As far as the "racist accent" goes, asians don't make distinctions between L and R, so they tend to pronounce it that way. If you grew up in an asian country, this probably sticks with you forever, unless you make a conscious decision to stop it. PC really took the best parts out of the game. Just my two cents.
Great, well explained comment. I can totally understand what you mean by that, but I think it was a mix of both honestly. Something I found hilarious when I first played it was how I remember in most games, punching enemies is slow and weak. but in SW, Lo Wang stereotypically throws his fists at lightning speed, killing most enemies in seconds. I agree, and I'm certain SW was more cheeking fun than actually being racist. I'm pretty sure RR WAS making fun of them, as the game title itself was making fun of them. I grew up with all the big build engine games and that's probably why I hold them as highlights in my game collection, though they're still very solid and well made games even today and hold up extremely well in my opinion. Blood, Duke, SW, Powerslave, RR, etc. Blood was probably my first one, played it when I was in pre k. (probably shouldn't have, hahaha) Duke I played a few years later, and SW, Powerslave, RR, and Witchaven I played all when I was in middle school. In general I absolutely love 90s games and they're almost all I play. Currently working on some reviews again on some. :) This (SW) was actually the last review I ended up making for a while, when I was 18 I believe. I also love the reboot, but just like you, kind of disappointed they made Lo Wang sound more Americanized.
@@evanharrison4054 @RetroDeath Reviews Just going to comment on several things here: 1. Original Shadow Warrior is a BAD game. Why? I mean your character wakes up on a boat on a river while enemies are shooting at you and of course you die in the first minute of the game. You slicing enemies, if that cam be considered "slicing" feels very unsatisfactory and senseless. Also, I was stuck in the early stages of the game without knowing what I am supposed to do to continue to the next level. A good game NEVER does that. Never let you to be stuck in a stage/level, basically telling you that you are on your own to figure out what to do. 2. Shadow Warrior 1 (Reboot if that's what you want it to call) IS NOT politically correct. It does not appeal or want to appeal to this kind of bullshit. Actually, if you read online articles about the game, everyone will tell you how highly offensive is the game. So, I simply don't know from where you got that out or what version of the game you even played. 3. You cleary need to understand the difference between a game who laughs at asian stereotypes and a game who laughs at asians, in general, because that's clearly the thing you thought about when you real "making fun of asian stereotypes". If you want, it makes fun of early asian movies and if you ever saw one you clearly knoe what I mean. It definitely DOES NOT make fun of asians or asian culture, in no way shape or form! 4. The "new" Lo Wang is actually highly likable, at least from my point of view. It has a likable voice and it is full of funny punch-lines and tons of other references. Definitely, a much better game than what it was made in the 90's. 5. White?!? Are we still going on with the racism in 2018?? We can't talk about something or someone, WITHOUT saying anything about the fucking skin colour?!?!? FYI, someone's behavior is NOT related to their skin colour. Is related to many other different factors but skin colour is not one of them. I can't even tell you how WRONG you are! The new Lo Wang (if that's how you want to call it) is not washed-out or trying to be like an american hero that you see in, again, early american movies. Is FULL of personality and a STRONG sense of humor!!! Someone who has such sense of humor cannot be a washed-out character!!! 6. "I think that I missed some references... " No dude, you missed ALL the references! I think that 2 things happened here: - you played like 2-3 hours MAX before saying to yourself that this game is making fun of asian and contains references only to asian/Japanese culture - you're just assuming things since all the references, just went over your head while you were playing, you couldn't be bothered to pay any kind of attention to them. 7. Evan, I am glad that you are conscious about the value of your original review. It truly values 2 cents. I mean, you don't pull out the "racism" card and then after say that the devs are "politically correct" if you consider yourself an honest reviewer or if you ever played the Shadow Warrior (2013). Since you are the only one who actually mention these things, I strongly believe that YOU are the racist and politically correct person around here.
The first level is the dojo, not the boat. TBH, its pretty hard to take the rest of your arguments seriously if this is your level of familiarity with the game. The katana is hard to master because you have to stand the exact proper distance from the target for it to work. SW2 solved this by extending the sword's reach to the other end of most rooms. It's more satisfying, because it's easier. How can you even 'get stuck' when you can pretty much cross the entire map in 30 seconds? It's also not that complicated. You have 3-4 coloured keys and you use them to open doors. It might require a certain lenght of attention span most people don't have anymore, though. In the reboot, if you don't pay attention of your surroundings, the worst thing that happens is that you miss out on some useless coins. In the original, it utterly fucked you. An inattentive run through the level will leave you shit out of bullets and other items. Items is also what the new Shadow Warrior completely lacks. It might be an acquired taste, but I love it when you are given a bunch of gadgets that can potentially make things a lot easier. What exactly is not politically correct about the new Lo Wang? He's an americanized japanese in his 30s who keeps spouting toxic amounts of sarcasm whenever someone is willing to talk to him. Being an absolute goddamned dickhead doesn't make you "edgy", it makes you look like an idiot. Like a new yorker. I really liked some of the jokes, but mostly I felt like I'm just seeing practically every other asian on tv or movies lately. 90s Lo Wang had an accent because he was japanese. Reboot Lo Wang sounds like he's never been outside the USA. The thing is that what I love about shadow warrior(level design, weapons, difficulty) is what you hate about it. I can't argue with it, especially since I really had fun with the reboot, but it is a fact that completing it just doesn't give you that massive sense of accomplishment that the original did. In the 90s, games were hard, so only a few dedicated people played them. These days, games are made to be very easy, so they are accessible to everyone. Including you.
