As far as painting goes, I am at whatever level is before beginner (!) and have never felt I was “artistic” in any way. But since retiring I have become interested in exploring the possibility that I can learn some artistic skills and have started drawing and doing watercolor painting. I am enjoying it so much! This video was very useful to me and I am going to try these techniques. Thank you.

I have been exploring this type of watercolor painting recently. I really love it because I have to move quickly and make decisions on the fly. This has kept me from overworking my paintings. It has also allowed me to let go of the fear of messing up my painting. This style of painting rewards the mess. Loosening up my painting has allowed me to enjoy the process so much more than I did previously. Thank you for the great tips and for showing two examples of the same subject. That really helped me visualize the process. The possibilities are endless.

I agree that not feeling scared and (almost) not caring if the painting turns out or not is very liberating and always gives better results. Thank you so much for watching the video and your comment!

I appreciate seeing the reference photo as you’re painting, it helps a novice understand why you’re placing colors where you do.

Love your loose painting its exactly what i was looking for. I just purchased watercolor supplies so that i could start painting. This is going to be a new hobby for me and loose painting looks easier then everything I’ve seen on TH-cam. Thank you for sharing, looking forward to more loose paintings.

Thank you for teaching such freedom in watercolor, they both are lovely. Sometimes we get hung up on the rules of the art and forget to paint with the heart, where true beauty comes from.

I love the loose style of watercolour, and you have achieved a better result than I've seen most other artists manage. I have returned to watercolours after many years and am now investigating this freeing type of watercolour. But I lean towards much more dream-like work than I've been able to find others doing - except you. Well done.

The one on the right was my favorite. Id love more videos on loose painting. Maybe even a tutorial on how you approach a reference photo and decide to paint loosely. Such as which elements you fade into the background which ones you accentuate. Im trying to get better at loose painting

I appreciate your comment, Grayson, I did another flower painting in the loose style and was debating whether to post it or not. You gave me a great idea for the main topic for it! It should come out August 28th.

Thank you so much, Diane! I can't talk and paint, I add explanation after the painting is done! :) I know it's very hard to understand what an artist is doing so I feel a certain amount of commentary is necessary for the video to be useful to people. Good luck with your art!

Really beautiful. I can't pick a favorite. What I think about loose watercolor is that it ain't easy being easy! Loose, for me, is much harder than detailed. You really have to have a good grasp of techniques and color theory and what looks good where. Like you said, hard edges with soft edges and 'lost and found' edges, etc. Beautiful style!

I like this style, with many impulsive decisions to create something so beautiful, which comes from pure spontaneity. When I paint, I prefer not to overthink and let my intuition dominate. Thank you for sharing! ❤🙏

I normally do not paint in a loose style, but this video may just get me to try it out. I still somewhat of a control freak so going loose will take some mental effort on my part. I did like both paintings, but the first one is my favorite. Thanks for the demonstration.

You are welcome, Robert, I'm glad you found this technique intriguing. I think also combining a loose approach with more controlled areas can be very successful.

I am so glad I came across your tutorials. My favorite technique is loose style and I’m anxious to learn lots more. I have macular degeneration so it’s difficult to paint in small areas or in between lines. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to following you. Thank you so much.
