    i think this is a great way to develop your own editing style. people think this is just copying, but the true way to just copy is by putting the image in photoshop and copying the color grading instantly through there. however - this way teaches one to actually understand the color grading formula better and then they can make their own adjustments to their personal liking. i think this is perfect for what i need. i have tons of inspo and it's a brilliant idea to literally have the image next to mine when i'm editing. thank you for the helpful video :)

      @@rykhen1459 Things have gone from having a photography style to having an editing style. The light in the scene that you're actually photographing is completely disregarded. No wonder everything starts feeling more and more fake

      so its really not copying but more of a teaching way...wouldn't you agree?

    I really like the tutorial, and I think this framework allows to get your own editing style over time.
    What I don't care is the "Aesthetics of my feed". Art shouldn't be confined to "look consistent", it should be free. Your photos can look vastly different. It might get you less followers, but you stay true to what you like, not what followers like.

    • @seandalt
      @seandalt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Hey Jan, I fully agree with you. Unfortunately, in order to be successful on a platform like Instagram you're almost forced to confine your work to a specific visual aesthetic. Some people break through that of course, but it's not easy as a photographer. This is one of my biggest gripes with Instagram and one of the reasons why I stopped being so active. I don't like feeling confined, and I think this can be very detrimental to new photographers who need to explore different styles.

    Very well explained video! I reckon one little thing you've missed is that all of Jack's shots have a vignette effect as well as some being darkened with a gradient filter or two. If you look up to the top corners of each of his pics you'll see the light darkens off quite a bit. I feel like almost all adventure photographers (you know, the guys who shoot Landrover defenders driving around Iceland etc) use a bit of vignette to build the drama.
    It's funny, there are a obviously a few different ways to get to the same result and it's really interesting to see how you get to there as opposed to how I would naturally imagine to get there. I would have guessed he starts by pushing up the warmth, then desaturating the whole shot, then selectively altering the hues and saturations of specific tones (namely the blues and oranges), deepening the shadows, same tone curve with crushed blacks, a bit of vignetter, some gradient filters and a bit of clarity and sharpening... But anyway, both methods probably take the same amount of time and get the same result. It's just cool to see how different brains would try different ways to do the same job.
    Cheers man!

    This is one of the best videos I’ve watched in a while. I’ve recently purchased a new camera body and regained interest in photography.
    I’ve always been frustrated that I made great progress in shooting over the years but still haven’t found my own & consistent editing style.
    This is a great way to get there I think! It will help me refresh my use of some of those Lightroom tools and also learn new ones.
    For some reasons, Photoshop always frightened me but not anymore 💪🏼
    Hopefully that’s not just excitement of the moment and I manage to get there 🤞🏼
    Thanks for the video btw. The photographer you chose as a reference has an incredible editing style and that is right up my alley!
    PS: I started taking photos after discovering 13thWhitness work on Edge of Desire tour video by John Mayer. I then saw his photos, I was blown away!
