@@lawrence142002 I think you mean Air Force. Bob Ross was Air Force and worked in the clinic there. He was never a drill sergeant. First a medical records technician, then moved up the ranks to master sergeant and served as the first sergeant of the clinic there.
He never took a penny for any of the art he made. He lived off his military pension. He always reminded folks the joy of painting aired on a non profit station. He really did it because he loved it.
He did have his own paint brush and paint supply company most of the paints he listed and used in the episodes were from his company. Boss Ross also taught painting lessons for a price, providing the paints and brushes from his company, at craft shows when his show was starting to take off. In the mid-late 80's my mother won a place in one of his painting lessons from a ceramics piece she painted for a craft show to promote her store, and she still has the painting she did in the class. I think she still even has the catalogue for the paints offered by his company that was handed out after the class too.
I think I read somewhere that the pictures done on the show were given to charities to auction off. Would need to search to see how true that is though
I read that they still have every painting he did, they never sold any, even when people have offered lots of money. I know he produced 3 paintings for each show, a practise, the one on the show and then one after.
@@Dracojax no they are all held by a company he created and left in trust to the family who discovered him. Some have gone to the Smithsonian but aren't on display, yet. Apart from the show he did do a lot of paintings and in classes etc.. those are the ones that are surfacing and selling for a lot. There's only one person (the daughter of the woman who discovered him) that can validate if it is really a Bob Ross painting.
@@Dracojax I am sure he was also paid for doing the TV shows. But all the paintings he made on the show were never sold. There were 3 versions of each painting. None of them were sold. He would sign the best one. So while he was painting he already had done at least one painting ahead of time that he could look at and work from. I noticed sometimes the final view of the painting would show things he did not show in the show, so maybe details that were added later. All the paintings are in a warehouse somewhere

I just wish they could have heard his soothing voice and understood what he was saying. They would love that as well. "a happy little tree" or "maybe there is a path heading back to a cabin". Lovely video and I loved the people. Bob Ross was always a strange little side show back in the day ... but a mesmerizing little side-show when you stopped to watch it
I used to watch him as a kid. It makes me happy to know so many years later even though he's gone kids are still being exposed to his work on the internet.
Everyone loves Bob. It’s too bad they don’t get the full effect of his narration of “happy little trees” and all the “indications” “maybe there’s a little squirrel over there” and such. Still cool and I think they can tell just how mellow he was. Also should mention that he did 5 of the exact painting per episode. I think he did something like 20000 paintings over his lifetime!
He usually made 3 copies of each painting. First he made 1 before the episodes were taped (all of the episodes for a given series were taped in a single week). Then there was the one made during filming with the original "reference" copy set up off camera for him. Finally he'd go back and make a final, more detailed version for the books that he also helped to create. Many of the paintings were donated to the various PBS stations that carried the show so they could be used for fundraising.
ThAt's because Bob Ross wasn't afraid to make a mistake. He'd call it a happy accident and, patiently, work the error into the painting in such a way you'd never in your life guess it wasn't intentional.
you would be surprised how often that happens in art. It's a bit like taking a couple of run-up steps before jumping across a gap. You carefully measure the smallest possible mark you can make, and once the seal has been broken, and you're committed to the decision, you can widen it and detail it until it looks like it was always meant to be. It works in painting, it works in writing, it works in engineering. Baby steps often lead to some beautifully marvellous manoeuvres, and, like the other fellow said, being unafraid to make mistakes to see where they lead. The trick is that you have to be patient, and thoughtful, and VERY careful, like you're handling delicate glass, because the first step is so crucial to the mistake being something you can turn into a master manoeuvre. It also works in interpersonal diplomacy/therapy; the most delicate broaching of a sensitive topic can prepare a person to receive firmer, potentially harsher advice. I think it's because the universe appreciates when we treat things with respect and care, and rewards it with grace.
@10:45 "How could I paint such a masterpiece?" Little did he know that he'd make an incredible painting in the next video. That's the gift of Bob Ross.
I want to see so many more channels like this, all over the world. We, in the more modern world with easy internet access, can take for granted just how much information about the world is available to us. We can learn so much about people and cultures of all kinds, but it’s truly beautiful to see those who didn’t grow up in our kind of environment get to experience new things for the first time. Really puts some things into perspective
I wish the amount of calmness and peace that Bob Ross had in his voice and mannerisms could be spread around the whole world. So many people desperately need it.
One interesting thing I just found out about Bob Ross is that he used to be a drill instructor in the U.S. military. Its hard to imagine this calm, soft-spoken man without his hair, yelling at recruits.
I bet he brought in a painting and a brush to place in front of the soldiers every day. Then, every time somebody messed up he'd say "Okay, everyone can say thank you to Private Jones. Because of him I'm going to ruin this beautiful painting." He makes a huge smudge right in the middle of the painting, ruining it. Everyone groans and yells at Private Jones for causing the punishment. Drill Sergeant Ross smiles to himself, knowing he will secretly turn the smudge into a beautiful cabin later that evening when nobody is looking.
I know that myself and many of my friends grew up watching Bob Ross with our mothers and grandmothers. Special memories are attached to that man. I have a close friend who's grandmother painted her wall and door to her apartment after watching a Bob Ross video.
What a wonderful idea for a channel. I especially loved how happy it made them feel to watch him painting and his joy in doing so. Bob Ross was an amazing person, and it's nice to see that he's still bringing joy to people many years after his passing.
Such lovely reactions, and an especially good day for Riaz - to have a delicious piece of chocolate cake and then be introduced to Bob Ross' painting is a happy experience, and you can see it in his eyes.
When I first saw Mr Abdul Aziz Rind, I thought what a wonderful expressive face he had, he looked so full of wisdom. Then he spoke, and his words were just as wonderful as his face was, especially his remark about Bob Ross remaining immortal through his work. Respect to you, sir.
It's not that he wasn't allowed to cut it. It's that he felt he should keep it-- because by the time he wanted it gone, it had already became his company's logo
The details around his hair style had a few points, he didn't like the perm much but he did it originally as a way to save money since he wouldn't be getting his hair cut as often and he kept it because the style became a sort-of calling card for him. The rest of his style of dress was also very deliberate, he picked the simple blue jeans and shirt because he thought it would be a timeless style and wouldn't look out of place if someone were watching the video years later.

She really does seem like a sweet lady. They all are quite frankly.
Even without understanding Bob's words, these people can feel the serene quality of the man, as well as enjoy his work.
Someone should send Parvati everything she would need to paint- including the means to play and watch Bob Ross episodes. She shows a keen interest in painting.

I have no idea why this was recommended to me by the algorithm, but it's proof that the algorithm gets it right on occasion. Seeing people discover Bob Ross for the first time is something magical.
Yes the internet, without it even I wouldn't have seen Bob Ross ever ❤️
"He looks so happy after painting it."
Beautiful observation.
Abdul Aziz Rind is rocking a fantatic beard and his wisdom is heart-touching. What a man.
I really enjoy his perspectives and insight
Everyone loves Bob. It’s too bad they don’t get the full effect of his narration of “happy little trees” and all the “indications” “maybe there’s a little squirrel over there” and such. Still cool and I think they can tell just how mellow he was. Also should mention that he did 5 of the exact painting per episode. I think he did something like 20000 paintings over his lifetime!
Yes I watched many of his videos, I even followed his tutorial once and painted through. He was a genius indeed.
They found his collection of paintings not too long ago.
@@robertmartin9029 yes you are correct. This came from his Wikipedia and elsewhere. Three was enough.
Okay holy crap, that last part I didn't know. That is absolutely astonishing.
Bob Ross would be so delighted to see people from across the world appreciate his art skills and enjoy his show.
Everyone, at some point, has instinctively thought Bob Ross ruined one of his paintings for a moment 😂
Yeah, like when he says, "let's use a nice yellow for our snow." Immediately you think, "What?! Nooo!!" But then you see it finished and it's perfect!
Bob Ross is one of the few artists who appeals to everyone, no matter who they are or where they are from.

I am glad to see that Bob Ross's Joy of Painting has no cultural boundary. Brings joy to everyone.

Oh how I remember watching him on PBS, when I was young.
This video brought me back for sure 👍
👍👍👍👍

Bob Ross actually hated his hair but wasn't allowed to cut it to keep with the image of the show. RIP Bob Ross
Rip Bob Ross ❤️
It's not that he wasn't allowed to cut it. It's that he felt he should keep it-- because by the time he wanted it gone, it had already became his company's logo
He was allowed to cut his hair, but he did not wanted
The details around his hair style had a few points, he didn't like the perm much but he did it originally as a way to save money since he wouldn't be getting his hair cut as often and he kept it because the style became a sort-of calling card for him. The rest of his style of dress was also very deliberate, he picked the simple blue jeans and shirt because he thought it would be a timeless style and wouldn't look out of place if someone were watching the video years later.
