I'm a 17 year old looking for a degree in Game art and I need to make a game for an interview. Glad that this video was the first one that I clicked on. Very helpful.
Man, i cannot describe what i felt when you started to say all those things by the end of the video. Even that i always try to think about it, listening to someone saying this really gave me a inspirational boost. Came for a simple "do this and that" tutorial and leaving with a real treasure in my mind.
I downloaded piskel and used it like you suggested, and it's almost perfect for what I needed. It was also free. The controls are pretty simple and intuitive with enough options to do what I want, but no unnecessary clutter from tons of options I don't need. I really appreciate not having to dig through 400 different options to find the 10 I need. I am going to use this to make sprites for RPG Maker MV, and you can import the sprite sheets and such right into the program, and it already knows how big they should be. That is so convenient. I loved the self updating color pallet, and the built in animation functions are great. The only things that annoyed me so far, were the fact that you can't flip a selection (horizontally or vertically) without flipping the entire layer. I found a work around for this, by just making a special FLIP layer that I can copy and past things into for flipping. (it's a pain, but it works.) Another thing is I wish that the alpha brush (to erase things) was right next to the color selector instead of inside of it. (or in addition to inside). Going into the color thingy to pick the erase is annoying. As is clicking on the erase button every time. Also it should switch back to your pencil after selecting the color in some easy way. Just minor gripes about the interface being a bit clunky. But overall, I'm very satisfied and this is exactly what I needed at the price I can afford.
To anyone who is wanting to become an indie game developer: *Good luck!* I'm thinking about making a game aswell, however I think it'd just be a side thing. I've been doing normal art for a few years but I think it'd be a lot easier to do pixel art instead of normal art. I'm also gonna have to learn how to code which is gonna suck, but hey, if I can at least try, you can probably do it! :)
If you go with Unreal Engine + Blueprints you won't need to code except you are going for some completely groundbreaking mechanics. Just drag and drop stuff. But there is the possibility to write your own physics and such in C++ but as I said, I don't really think it is necessary except for the own ego.
I recently found out that the most successful indie games are made by people with a lot of experience from working in large studios. Also, you might like Gdevelop, it's the easiest to use game engine I've tried, and it's free. You can only make 2D games. though.

The reason I want to learn how to draw Pixel Art, I want to make shirts in Animal Crossing New Horizons.
Holy crap, dude... your color theory tips for shading and highlighting blew my fragile little mind! You just advanced me so far with such a simple tip. Thanks, this video is probably the best compilation of info for the basics that I've ever seen.
Me learning color theory:
I like green
Hahaha I can relate so much!
Green is not a creative color.
I am colorblind
Not only very helpful, but also VERY VERY ENTERTAINING, from the beginning to the end
From art talk to artistically talking. Great video, I appreciate your wisdom and insight. 😊
thank you for introducing me to miniboss. out of all of the tutorials i’ve watched this one has been one of the best. thank you.
This video is really good
I am a medical doctor and just decided to step aside specialization to build a game with near 0 experience in gaming developing.
It was a really hard decision, but we must at least try to archive what we love.
And your video inspired me to keep this plan going.
Thanks a lot, friend.
This is one of the best tutorials I’ve seen, love the balance you achieve between fun/informative. Loved it!
This was truly helpful! I'm trying to learn pixel art by myself but when it comes to look for reference and tutorials, I never know where to go, thank you!
Also inspiring, great video!
Fantastic guide!
What a glorious but underrated channel this is!
Really good quality vid! Keep up the good work Alvin!
Hey man, this was awesome. It took me several YT searches and ended up here by sheer luck. Your video was by far the most enjoyable I've watched since I started looking down this rabbit hole of wanting to dip my toes in the pxel art waters. Cheers to you, thanks
Jeez, I came here to learn the bare basics to start working with pixel art, ended up learning about life. I hope the motivation you just gave me sticks out for long enough for me to learn this new skill. Will make sure to come back here often to remember what it is that I'm doing. Sincerely, thank you for this.
Thank you Alvin for a brilliant video. The hard work and passion you put into it really shines and it had so many amazing moments of inspiration and realisation for me. That poem at the end about art was just incredible, I was expecting you to say it was from some famous poem at the end and when you didnt I was like wtf that was his own words?! You really are a great content creator. Keep up the good work man
This was out of all the pixel art videos I watched the last few days, the BEST one and one I really needed to watch with a lot of things I needed to hear and amazing advice. Thank you.
Not only i got a proper entry tutorial, but as well as inspiring words, man i'm burning with passion in making games right now.
Also i just got fired from the IT industry and decided to pursue game development, the very reason i became a programmer. Thanks for the tips and also man i'll share this with my friends Thank you so much!!
Glad to see people are making pixel art tutorials ☺️
man... that last point really made me think about my future career or just life on general and all the games I played in my childhood thinking about the struggles the creators went through. mad perseverance and love. Thank you!
This is my favourite TH-cam video I have ever watched. Thank you for blessing us with it ❤
Great video, I loved all the info, the pace of the video and that ending was the cherry. Got my sub.
Bro. Great video. I took a lot away from this including some things I didn't even know I needed to hear. Keep up the good work!
Came back to the video after applying everything you talked about. It’s the perfect video for someone starting out in my opinion. Helped me go from zero to level 3 goblin - not quite the protagonist yet but I’m levelling up. But in all seriousness, I have been using assets from unity store for a long time as I never thought I had any artistic ability but this video helped me a lot. I grinded and I’m making art that is somewhat game worthy so thanks a lot. Hope you have a nice day!
20 year game dev here. Those are mighty inspiring words there toward the end, even for someone who has seen a lot of stuff in the industry like me. I really hope you keep making videos. Thank you!
Just watched this with my son and we both left feeling inspired and encouraged. Thanks for putting exactly this into the world!
Thank you because of you now I’m getting good in my pixel art skill
This is a bunch of things I've learned over a long time working with pixels in a short approachable process. Great tutorial. Well done
Dude! that tip on moving away from yellow was genius. That guy in the comments is right you are incredibly underrated. subbed!
"All art is a struggle, forever, always." I have to subscribe to this man who speaks truth.
Thanks for the video man. I am just getting into this! Subbed! By the way do you recommend Piskel for a beginner ?
You, my friend just got a new sub right away. I really enjoyed this video and it really helped me a lot. You just clarified a lot of stuff that was driving me nuts since I want to become an Indie game dev too.
As someone who really enjoys art as well as coding, I recently discovered pixel art and its something I really want to try. I've never been interested in digital art until now, and I've always wanted to be a game dev. So my goal for 2021 is to learn pixel art! And maybe one day I can make my own game :)
i tried getting into pixel art years ago and you touch so many points I wish I saw sooner that would have helped rather than discourage me 😭
Dude
that, has genuinely been one of the most helpful and enjoyable to watch tutorials about pixel art.
Because of this video, now i want to actually start making pixel art :v
You did a seriously great job on this, keep it up man.
Alvin this was so good! What an amazing video! :)
can't tell u how much this video means to me because it really cemented for me what i want to do (finally, at almost 30 yrs old). thank you!
Wow I didnt think I would stay for the whole thing but I was blown away by this video. Subbed keep up the good work!
