Setting the Great Fire of London in school!

- Our Year 1 and Year 2 classes (6-7 year olds) made models of Tudor houses, which we strung together in closely packed streets.
As the fire started to rip through the houses, London burned before their eyes! As history told, we called bands of firefighters to fight the blaze and eventually the fire was extinguished.
All the children learned valuable lessons that day, not least how Charles II decreed that all houses from then on would be built of stone to save a fire like that from ever happening again.
Update: To those that have commented about the use of lighter fluid and safety, we discussed the health and safety of setting a fire safely, the children were behind a coned off area, there were adults supervising them and we discussed the use of lighter fluid before we came outside.
We didn't include that bit in the video as it wasn't really part of the story!
Watched this with my 5 yr old daughter as part of her KS1 enquiry. The specific concern regarding the teacher’s use of lighter fluid is him squirting it onto or near naked flames - this is an absolute no-no in respect of H&S due to the potential for the stream to ignite, and cause an explosion in the vessel. This is absolutely the same rule as not pouring petrol onto a lit bonfire.
I noticed that the smart kids made a very nice colorful houses, your explanation was very good, even I enjoyed watching it... big hello to all of you from the Emirates.

This is a really good idea. Well done! we did this in my school also and the children loved it. Really helped them to understand the concept of the fire of london.

You`ve inspired me and we did this as well. We had the firefighters present and children enjoyed it very much. We have also discussed how it felt to see your house burning- they`ve worked hard to make those houses. Risk assessment was a must of course. Thanks for your idea.

Hi Charlotte, I squirted lighter fluid on the houses' roofs before we set fire to them and then squirted on more as was needed!
I did the exact same thing as that at my school!

My daughter in Year1 is about to do a Fire of London project. She and I really enjoyed this video and made her understand what I've been telling her about it.
As for the dumb-ass comments, THIS is the best way to teach about Fire Safety. The would have had to carry out a risk assessment and have fire safety equipment on hand.

I'm afraid I don't have a copy of the risk assessment anymore as this was a few years back. Off the top of my mind, the main points from the RA were:
1) Houses burning.
Risk: High.
Safety: Houses area coned off (chn 15 ft away). Bucket of water on hand. Fire set by adult. Adult helpers in charge of groups of chn behind coned off area.
2). Smoke from fires.
Risk: Low.
Safety: Chn 15 ft away from fire. Bucket of water if smoke too great.
We informed the parents ahead of time, explaining where the chn would be in relation to the fire and had no problems.
I hope that was useful! Sorry I can't offer the full assessment :)

I have been watching house fires in the US on TH-cam. Many houses there are made of wood and have wooden or plastic shingles and not tiles on their roofs. It seems brick built houses and rare due to the cost but these wooden ones burn so fast. Many new houses in the UK now have a wood interior wall and not the thermal block construction. That must be a backwards step.
I would be a bit concerned that one of these children and a couple of mates just might 'try this at home' . What I got up to 60 years ago with my mates I cannot write here. Very good video but sort out a few TH-cam links of real houses burning, you never know one day it might just save a life.

It's true! We talked about these houses (2nd versions, their originals were in the classroom) with the kids and how they were for recreating London. We had some really interesting conversations about how they felt seeing the houses burning and how the people of London must have felt. The parents and kids both loved it!

Fair enough, the lighter fluid is flammable. But, I bore in mind the wind was gusty and the flames weren't going to burn high or steady. So, lighter fluid worked as a good fluid to soak the houses with and would a safe way to help the fire spread further.
