  • This is the Debrief.
    One soccer game, each week.
Debriefed by USWNT legend and 2x World Cup Champion Tobin Heath
This week's match: The UEFA Women’s Champions League Final
    Lyon v. Barcelona
    -
"The Debrief is a concept that comes from the U.S. Women’s National Team.
A sports psychologist came in before the 2019 World Cup to figure out the marginal gains - what could we do that no other team was going to do to win that World Cup?
We’d go on the field for 90-plus minutes. And no matter what happened - win, lose, or tie - we’d come back to the locker room, sit down, and debrief.
What did that look like? Everybody just getting out all of their energy on the past game. Their feelings. Their emotions. Holding each other accountable. Whether it was the good, bad, or ugly it was a time to expel all of our feeling about the game. And then we’d wipe our hands and say ‘onto the next game.’
Doing it collectively as a team was a game changer. It completely unlocked our ability to move through tournaments in a positive way.
So we took this concept and put it into this show. I’m going to watch one game every week, and then I’m going to just expel all of my feelings about the game and together we’ll Debrief.”
    - Tobin

I appreciate the content, and especially the mention of a soft touch being important and valued as a skill. Wish this was longer so you could get more into the weeds. Lyon had their chances early on and if they were better at finishing on the day an early goal would have changed the face of the match. Chances not taken! Match seemed so tight until that Barca goal.

Lyon FWs were too focused on getting behind the defenders and didnt use the space between the lines, where as Alexia did and scored that goal.

I was rooting for Lyon, but Barcelona was bVttVr in converting chances.
The goal by Alexia Putellas was the absolute highlight of this awesome final.

I don't think Bonmati's goal was a shot on goal at all, I think she was crossing the ball to CGH arriving at the far post.

No. She left at 17 and spent 3 1/2 yrs with PSG. Jill told her If she wanted to play for the national team, she had to Come back and play in the states. Unfortunately how they did it back then. Spent 6 yrs at Portland and then signed a one year loan deal with Lyon in 2022 and the club permanently signed her in 2023 thru 2026.

Alexia really is extraordinary! I didn't have any reason to root for Barca, but watching her play made me a fan. The only jerseys I own are Tobin's and her's. This goal was so cathartic and I really hope it helps catapult her back into the form she was in when she won the two Ballon D'ors.

I have been fortunate to watch & understand Brazil 82 with Zico, Socrates, Falcao & Eder in midfield - the greatest team to play the beautiful game in a beautiful way. Of course, in Tobin's view they won't matter because they didn't win anything just like Cruyff's Holland in 74.
Alexia reminds me of Socrates. Her telepathic connection with Jenni Hermoso made me a fan of Barca women in 2018. It was like watching Zico & Socrates working their way through the centre of compact defenses. Mesmerizing football.

Couldn't agree more with all the praises you give Horan, she's doing an important job paving the way for future American players, it has been sickening to see all the reddit bros and facebook boomers insisting that she's there for her husband because god forbid that players choose other leagues not named nwsl because they think those are better competitions and that women making career decisions without revolving around men.

Great game and Great Debrief! the Barc fan there was unbelievable! so much passion and energy!! The thing I really want to talk about(unrelated to this game) is when Jonatan Giraldez become the manager of the Spirit, will he be or be able to bring Barc style of playing to Spirit considering the player was bought up to play a different way or will he have to instead adapted more toward the traditional US style of "football"? Is he coming to Spirit by himself or bring along some of his "barcelona" staff aka Emma style?

    • @portlandthorns9929
      @portlandthorns9929 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Forget about the "barca style", you said it yourself, the players didn't grow up playing the proper soccer, they were immersed in the rough athletic football style, that's how everyone in this country plays at every level and age group, all muscles and cardio, inferior soccer brain. They will never be able to play the beautiful passing soccer that Barca do week in week out, the only way to have that is to import those players to one team.

    • @zainetteramos5554
      @zainetteramos5554 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

It is my understanding that Jona isn't bringing any of the current Barca staff. He already had a coach from Español, as the assistant coach. The rest of the Barca staff will stay with Pere Romero, the incoming coach. Pere is one of Jonas assistant coaches.

Been playing together for years and undetsand each pther like no other. Same for aitana alexia patri pina ona. I see them more playing like carolina courage having allot of posession with a combination of direct play.

Insightful debrief by one of those rare technical players to emerge from USA. Although I differ on couple of your observations.
    Agree:
    - football is a game that you play with your brains: Cruyff (this is engraved on La Masia entrance wall)
    - modern football is a game of chess in the midfield
    - Barca & Lyon are only women's teams capable of playing modern football like a top men's outfit; Barca for 90', Lyon inconsistent
    - finer margins that you called dichotomy went Barca's way (every champion team in history needed that rub of the green)
    - Alexia, CGH (& Jenni) are among the greatest footballing brains across genders
    - CGH is the feminine avatar of Garrincha
    - Horan was fantastic with her gritty football
    Disagree:
    - how you play the game is as important as winning; fans from technical nations like Spain, Italy, France, Portugal & Netherlands appreciate that
    - despite outwitting an opponent, a much better team can lose due to finer margins not going their way
    - the process brings success in the long run
    - Brazil 1982, Holland 1974 are teams that never won anything but are still celebrated for their impact on modern football & frequently crop up in discussions about greatest teams to play the game
When will US system start teaching young girls to take care of the ball instead of their opponents? With such financial, cultural, population & infrastructure resources USWNT should be dominating WoSo. When will the system move away from rugby football?

Tobin is trying to catch up with Femenil soccer such as Spain. Remember when she belittled their winning the World Cup last year by saying “Well done Spain. Well done to Japan who beat them 4 - 0.” There’s tremendously great women’s soccer in Hispanic based teams as well.

Love the Horan shout. So many US football pundits downplay Horan because she is not in the US. Skip college soccer. Go pro and go to Europe young. That's courage, and leadership. The future top players will do this in both women and men. (Ok the two Champ League finals she started were NOT consecutive. They were LYON"s last two finals appearances and 2 of the last three years.)

    "These are the champions
    Die besten
    Les grandes equipes
    The champions"
It has always bothered me that the anthem ignored the Italian and Spanish languages, they are the most successful in Europe.
In any case, it is the anthem of the men's champions, the women's anthem is another in the same epic style.

Hello Tobin (and Christen). Football! I was beside myself at having to pick my girlfriend up from work and go do some jobs for her instead of watching the game (I know my place). I did manage to avoid finding out the score and watch on DAZN on TH-cam as if live. I was not disappointed. It was everything you said. Good Debrief.
I commented before that I watched every Barcelona game since the English players arrived. The team are a joy to watch. The other Spanish teams are falling behind they are so good. Like I mentioned in your comments after the World Cup, if US investors put money into some of the other teams on condition that young US players got that chance you mentioned, to train and play overseas, surely it could only benefit both sides of the deal?

On the 1st goal, I have to disagree. Aitiana is trying to center for Graham or Paralluelo, who were making the runs to space. Lyons' defender unfortunately deviates the center's throw into the net. Look at the angle of Aitiana's pass. There was more chance of a goal from a center than going straight to goal from that angle.
