    Wow. Brings back memories of being in awe as a high school student going in to the city to hear the organ abck in the 70's. So glad to see that it has been restored not only to its former glory, but also being improved as well!

    Cool video, thanks for sharing! The horizontal pipes are unusual! I really wish that someone would post a video of this organ swinging! It seems like theater styles are off the menu for this beast. I still love every recording though!

      You don't often hear theater style played on this organ. But hearing it played by Walt Strony in 2009 gave us a taste of what this organ is like in a theater organist's hands.

    I was there to hear Keith Chapman in the late '60's and later to hear Michael Stairs and Peter Richard Conte.
    All three were masters of their art....Chapman, perhaps, most miraculously, since most, if not all, of the combination action was inoperative during his tenure.

    "That 32' would turn your guts to mush if you stood near it too long."
    Actually, the waves are so big at that point they need some distance to develop properly. I'm not sure you'd even really notice them if you were standing near the pipe. At the National Cathedral, if you are sitting in the choir (part of the church directly under the pipes, but at a distance of 50 feet or so), the full pedal will definitely start churning your stomach. Obviously not unsafe though, as members of the choir seem to have survived many decades of it. They have a 64' Bombarde there, but the lowest notes are electronically generated because the pipe would have been so gigantic and taken up so much space, which is quite limited there versus other places housing large organs.
    The dangerous stops to stand near would be the state trumpets, the loudest of which could surely damage an eardrum.

      If you are talking about the one at the National Cathedral, only a few notes of it. the lowest 6 notes I think.

      +Salmagundiii when you say the lowest notes are electronically generated, what is used to generate them? like a subwoofer array using digital pipe notes? how big is it?

      Do take the tour! Seeing the inside of the Wanamaker Organ is amazing. It actually enhances the listening experience in the Grand Court having been behind the scenes.

    Absolutely amazing !! What's the piece played at 1min38 ? There is another performance on TH-cam by Robert Plimpton on the video called "Robert Plimpton, Organist".

    Oh ohhhhhh, that has to be rare, to get to go inside while running, it is one of the two largest size of number of pipes organs in the world, second only to the boardwalk hall organ, for an organ afficianato this is like, one of the best things you could ever get to experiance, Like getting to meet the president or pope or something, though I cant imagin how much air would blast you standing next to a blowing pipe from such a large amount of air or the imposing steel jungle the chamber is.

  • @Tom-Lahaye
    @Tom-Lahaye 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Whats the frequency of that 32' pipe, must be 10Hz or something.
    In the video you only hear the higher harmonics (or distorsion of the microphone), because almost no audio equipment can record or playback these frequencies, except very expensive high end equipment. (and most people won't hear it, just feel it)
    All these people with thumping car audio video's on TH-cam can eat their heart out here, the only other thing that can make these low sounds are large diesel engines from ships or locomotives, or jet engines.

    • @gromitbilly
      @gromitbilly  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do not know the frequency of the lowest of the 32' pipe. As you can here it was a series of beats rather than a note. It was great to stand next to it but it was hardly musical that close. What a difference out in the Grand Court where all of the sounds mix. You definitely feel the deep notes. Where the organ wraps itself around you and squeezes.

    • @Salmagundiii

      32 ft. organ pipe is 16 Hz. A couple organs in the world have a true 64' stop with a 64' pipe in the pedal; though that is mostly useful for the middle octave of the pedal, the lowest notes can definitely be felt. Its lowest note is 8 Hz.

    • @RealRaynedance
      @RealRaynedance 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      dieselmupke I believe Keith Chapman said that the largest pipe has an 8 Hz tone.

    • @Salmagundiii
      @Salmagundiii 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Wanamaker organ does have a "quinted" 64 rank, meaning it is composed of 2 notes producing a 64' resultant frequency. So, yes, it is capable of producing an 8 hz tone.
      I think there are only 2 true, full 64 (long, and pitch) ranks in the world. Others use resultants for the lowest frequencies. (or in the case of the National Cathedral, an electronic generator)

      Salmagundiii You're right. One is in the Boardwalk Hall organ and the other is in the Sydney Town Hall organ.

    • @gromitbilly

      The first piece is the end of the Toccata from Widor's Symphonie No. 5. The second I don't know, it is part of a piece that was played that day. Some last minute rehearsing was going on during the open chamber times.
