Ember is a diamond in the rough. Thank you for sharing the difficult bits - it really helps others with similar problems. I agree, Ember’s dressage test had a lot of really nice bits. He is such a pretty boy and clearly sweet too. You’ll get there with the other events. You are such an amazing rider and with Justine’s help you and Ember will be flying through 3 day events next season. I love how kind and understanding you are with your horses; that is the most important thing imho. :)

My tb x wb used to nap and it would be tricky when competing. Like you said, my instructor taught me to turn her into tiny circles to stop the “plant”, and then push forward. Even if you go forward a couple steps before he plants again, start the tiny circles again and push! Tbs are so bright and he will learn very quickly that planting doesn’t work and the only option is to move forward!

Love your attitude. Ember is a lucky horse to have found someone with the patience and love to let him develop slowly without punishment when he's a bit over-faced by things. He'll get there! And what's more - he'll get there happy and confident.

Ember looks sooooo well!! He has completely changed and looks so the part! Shame about the napping, but keep at it and get out as much as possible and he will catch on. (Not saying anything you don’t already know of course!) You are doing an amazing job🥳🥳

  • @fleetskipper1810
    @fleetskipper1810 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

He is doing so well! He wants to please and is really smart-glad you dropped down a level to give him som wiggle room while he susses it out.
About the free walk- I think the judge bumped you up a half-score because she recognized that his stride was active, as you said. My guess is that you didn’t gat a 7 because he’s (ideally) supposed to stretch over his topline a bit more and stretch his nose forward, as well as down. Whenever I scribe, that’s a common judge comment whenever the free walk is evaluated.
He’ll get there-he really has a lovely walk.
I just love this guy. You are doing really well with him.

I applaud you for not carrying a whip with Ember, my Thoroughbred, Henry, doesn't care for me carrying a whip/crop either it makes him jittery calm without it. You know your horse. As for "napping" at what I did teaching my welsh pony mare and now my TB to jump is to have a friend stand on the other side of the cavaletti and call them over with a carrot about 8 strides after the landing, learned this from my Canadian trainer, to help them associate positive things with jumping. Secondly it might be that Ember is feeling off in his rhythm with he "naps". I go back to the German Training Scale. You will get there, my TB wasn't even sure how to step over poles when he joined our family, had to teach him all about poles, walking through jump standards, cavaletti etc. I do lots of cavaletti work to helped Henry's rhythm a ton.

I just took my young off the track thoroughbred to her first event and withdrew before dressage because she completely lost her mind with the atmosphere. Bless her heart. So now it's back to basics of trying to teach her how to find relaxation in tense environments. These racehorses can be challenging but I know they're worth it!

I applaud you for taking the positives from your day. For me, it’s reassuring to know it doesn’t always go to plan even for those much more experienced and skilled than I am! I’ve just started bringing my mare back into work following surgery for a fractured splint bone, and we’ve been stuck a few times where she’s decided her field mates and home are much more interesting than pottering around the block with me! Getting annoyed about it does nothing but make you feel awful afterwards and at the end of the day, they’re just trying to communicate to us that they’re not sure about the situation. You’ll get through it with him I’m sure x

She had schooled there lots so I thought she would be ok but after the first night, day of show, she fell apart big time. It was my first show too so I couldn't really handle the atmosphere either lol. So I scratched her & we stayed so she could take it in. Next year hopefully will be better 🙏. I only had thoroughbreds, and this reminds me so much of what i used to go through, always started like this, thoroughbreds are not like other horses, they are special, they are so intelligent and so hypersensitive, just focus on having fun and doing lots of different things, as you said, work on the connection between you both, the trust the bond that's all, focus on the partnership.. otherwise dressage looked fantastic, he has changed and is looking great... do lots of work just you and him lunging him over cross country jumps loads of treats, every time he makes a step in the right direction, he has improved so much, just go really slowly it will pay off BravO for being so good-humoured and sharing the raw and real.. That's the truth of eventing 🌻🤗🌻

I took my ottb to his first dressage day a couple of months ago and he lost the plot. I wasn’t sure I was even going to be able to get on as he wouldn’t stand still. Once I got on it was like riding a coiled spring but after a little while he calmed down a bit and did a couple of reasonable tests. They sure are a complex breed though!
I’m not sure if it’s the case but if you’ve always been training with other horses he’s familiar with, maybe it might be worth taking him out xc and sj on his own 🤷🏼‍♀️

My first ‘give it a go SJ’ with my young horse was spent just about walking, a tiny bit of trot and serious amounts of encouragement from everyone once he had to leave the warm up and go it alone. We have been working hard but yet to tackle that scenario again. I’m so hopeful it will be better next time because he’s such a sweet horse but very determined when he doesn’t feel confident to do something! You did a great job and sorry to say from my point of view, sort of reassuring that such a good rider like you also has similar challenges at times x

Well done - as someone who has had to overcome the same napping issues I can only tell you what worked for us
I found that the tension upset him “internally” and he then became uncomfortable and would stop so try some calming products,a calming cookie or a paste or an ongoing gut healthy supplement and he will soon overcome it all and just keep going out to comps. As someone who has scribed a lot I think on the freewalk it was a decent amount of stretch but then he popped up and down a couple times after X and the activity was a little low. Not a judge but that would be my best guess. Understandable for his stage of training but the judge has to mark what they see not what they think the horse will do in 6 months. Also 6.5 is good.
Anyway now you have some goals so all good!

O Lucy, a bit disappointing for you. But like others have said, lots of positives, like a lovely dressage, great in the SJ warm up, and XCountry. Exposure to competitions, especially xcountry, where watching horses going fast can be over-stimulating, might be good. Horses eh! 🙄

A whip isn't for punishment it's for clarifying aids and translating aids from the ground to the saddle. Better to have one and not need it then need one and not have it. They aren't evil.

No but some horses just do not respond well to them, my own mare switches off

My ex-racehorse was totally dead to the leg unless I carried a whip. I never had to touch him with it, but I had to carry it. He wasn’t afraid of it. He’d snooze while I rubbed it all him.
I think that he learned at the track that when a rider carries a whip, it means “we’re going to work now.” Otherwise, he reverted to his natural state, which was lazy.

He did a nice dressage test, and technically, he is still a youngster and it’s his first ODE, so plenty of time for him to get into things.
