The test applied in Australia is basically: what do you want to be able to shoot? If the answer is targets, pest animals, or game for eating, then you can get a (non-auto) gun, as long as you pass a background check, sit out a waiting period, and can prove you have safe storage for it. If your answer is: I want to be able to shoot *people* (even in self defence), then the answer is "no gun for you", and everyone is safer for it.

Idiocy. Criminals don't care about laws. You are not safer by not being able to protect yourself. Not only that, but you also let the criminals know you don't have guns. Good thing you let them know you're defenseless. Interesting how these mass shootings don't happen in areas where schools have armed security and citizens can legally carry. Your idealistic world of peace is great, but guns exist, thus the only real solution is to make sure that criminals don't dare to try anything for fear of their life. The only reason the government isn't out of hand is because the people have guns. I like not being forced into COVID quarantine camps. There are so many people who think getting a gun is easy but have never owned or shot one. There are gun safety classes and background checks involved. It's not an instantaneous process where you just swipe your card and walk out with a gun. The majority of gun deaths occur by pistol yet they only seem to want to ban "Assault weapons," a mythological category of weapons that don't exist. Gun control isn't about saving people, rather it is simply a means to more control.

It's fairly straight forward to get a license for A&B Long-arms, and a bit harder to get a C class, which is usually acquired by professional shooters, but it does take a lot more time and quite a few more hoops to jump through for an H license, however it is a tad easier if you already have an A&B, or C License. The H License though is designed to ensure applicants are not only good folk and don't have a criminal history, but that they're patient, and dedicated as well. Anyone who isn't both patient and dedicated, won't get their hands on a Handgun, which makes for a much more calm and responsible owner. I attend my club nearly every weekend and one thing is certain, the members are all incredibly stand up citizens while essentially being the salt of the earth. Great atmosphere to be honest.

You are allowed to shoot if presented with these threatening your life. Does not matter if the gun has no bullets in, how am I supposed to know if it's loaded, at that moment I'm thinking it is or you wouldn't be trying to hold me up right?!!. We treat and expect that ALL guns are loaded. A knife is actually more deadly/ lethal. As with a gun you can track where the bullet goes in your body. With a knife, being so long and slim and sharp you cannot see where the knife has travelled. You can't find every millimetre it has gone. The track doesn't present on x-ray and sometimes not even on MRI. A knife is actually bigger. A minimum of 1 inch of damage by how long the length of it is. People bleed more and sometimes unless its bleeding well you won't find it and die from a slow bleed which wasn't picked up.

@@nitewatchman1576 Mate, I'm as free as free can possibly be. I mean there is an obvious paradox to freedom where in order to have a freedom you must first give up a freedom. But I live in a county full of opportunities, surrounded by good people, healthcare, education, basic amenities etc etc etc - in fact we have MORE than enough available AND we live in a beautiful tropical paradise alongside some of the most spectacular wildlife in the world. & If in order to enjoy these luxuries & freedoms, all we have to do is abide by some pretty basic civil responsibilities like paying taxes, abiding by laws designed to prevent wrongdoings against myself & my fellow man & an assortment of other restraints that are necessary to maintain our beautiful society - mate, I'm more than happy to oblige 😁👍 & I'm free to object & free to make changes if I want to. NO society is 100% perfect, but I'm grateful to live in one that is pretty damn close. & it's as free as free can possibly be - so tell me where I'm wrong?

To get a gun in australia, all i did was go to the local gun shop, glossip st st marys, and said i want to buy a rifle but i dont have a licence, he said no worries and gave me a form to fill out with a number to call, i called the number and met the guy at his house and he showed me a brief gun safety talk and took the forms i filled out and said youl find out within 6 weeks if you get a licence, 6 weeks later i got the licence in the mail, so i can buy rifles and shotguns for hunting.. if i want a pistol i have to join a pistol shooting club then i can get that license too...
Its not how the nra in america says it is.. its that easy... any aussie who disagrees with me has never attempted to get a licence or a gun.. dont believe the lies...

I paid $10, sat a gun safety course which went for 2 hours (watched a PowerPoint presentation then had to answer questions on a test) next day filled out a heap off forms including one asking what licensed i wanted and why and to provide proof - I provided letters from people that own rural property and a letter from a gun club. Sent all forms away with identification documents and the slip off paper saying I passed the test. 4 weeks later received an email from vicpol saying I had been approved and passed the background check so expect a letter within a few weeks, 3 weeks later I received a letter in the mail with a form with instructions and an amount that will be payable. Went into vicroads, handed them the form, got identification photo done and paid the $280 fee for my gun licence for 5 years.

I'm curious to know what state this was in. Because I don't know of a state or territory in Australia where, even if you have a valid license, the proof of purpose (proof you have a valid reason for purchasing), doesn't apply.
I've had a firearms license (multiple classes), in 4 different states over the last 27 years and am a certified range officer at a national level.
      Could you elaborate?

Australia's system is fairly straightforward, and sensible. Owning a gun is still legal. Just not semi-auto's, or automatic, firearms are allowed. You have to have a valid reason for owning a gun. Hunting, Agricultural purposes, Target Shooting. Not just because you want one. You have to do a Firearms Safety test, before you get your licence. And your licence has conditions. Such as, for target shooting, belonging to a valid club, and doing so many attendances each year, and not just turning up, signing in, and going, actually shooting under the supervision of the club's Range Officer. Firearms must be locked up, and secured, at all times, with the ammunition kept under separate lock and key. Firearms must be transported, to and from the range, etc. with the bolt/firing mechanism separate. And the restrictions on hand guns is even harder. BUT, you can still buy, own, and shoot, guns, if you're serious about it, and do the right thing.

I love how Americans travel with one up the barrel waiting for an accident to happen as soon as there is a round up the spout / chamber the weapon is unsafe and a danger to all people around the shooter , have a round loaded is the best way to have a negligent misfire event and someone dying unless you are about to fire at what you want to hit.
