People get it from each other, clothing, and/or humid damp places like public lockers/showers. Monsoon season in Asia is a perfect time for the fungi spores to attach to some shipped clothing, So yeah, always wash new clothes.

I noticed that happens mostly with synthetic fibers. You should give them 2+ cycles by principle even without the smell factor though, because they also often come with excessive dye.

Took about 5 washes to get the dye out of the stained clothes. I haven't washed the cardigan again since, but I'll probably have to wash it by itself for a few times. The first time I wore it it stained my white jeans pink, which is still visible after like 10 washes. This was the first time that happened, never before did I have clothes that were so excessively dyed.
Always a good idea to wash freshly purchased clothes. You never know how dusty they've been, how many people tried them on, or what substances were used to treat them before they were shipped out
