      I thought the same thing until I actually read something about it and discovered that’s not at all what it is. The festival is ran by a non-profit, it’s not controlled by a massive corp, they don’t sell anything in the festival, almost everything in there is created by other attendees or artists, the attendees essentially trade with each other on a non-monetary bartering system that’s about providing services or gifts… It’s really weird, you’d think someone that’s as aware of alternative lifestyles as Fantano would be less quick to make a completely inaccurate assumption of a whole festival. This just feels like dumb content made to shit on a whole group of people that attend something simply because you think it’s the cool thing to do and you don’t understand it in the slightest. It’d be like someone making a whole shitpost about people who go to hardcore gigs, or people who are ravers

    I've been to burningman for 10 years. My reason for first going was to go to somewhere where you are free to be as you are. I have since discovered that I can do that at home, but it was a place to experiment and discover the courage I needed to just do that. I also went BECAUSE it is harsh. winds, dust, mud, etc. I push myself to see if I'll break. I went because it forces me to be self sufficient (at least the way I approach it that is), I have to plan for the unexpected (as this year had shown). Finally, I go as it gives me a place to share some structures I have created. All that being said, the changes in burningman from my first year 2008 to 2022 when I last when have not been good. The organization violates it's own principles, there is a large group who go for the clout and likes on their social media. Many people go with comfort in mind and now it has become a large sea of mostly campers, very few of us are left who build their own structures. I miss what it was, but I am glad I have gone for the past years as I feel I have gained a lot from it. I just wish it had not become what it is as it is no longer a place where people can learn and grow as I was able to. This all just means that it is the dead carcass that needs to be left to rot so something new can be created. Will I go again, maybe, but I now go in my own way, which is ironic as my way of going would now be considered unique. I choose what I get out of it and how I go, I don't engage in the concept that seems to be common and is expressed as "I want to be unique in the way everyone else is"

At one point, it was an art festival. everyone I knew who was a burner, was creating mobile installations to haul out there and forming camps of local people. it stopped being that, roughly mid-aughts. (like '03 to 05) Burners weren't hippies. they were art freaks. They used to call people that you describe "tourists", because they were so few. The tourists took over. it started getting ugly in the later aughts, with them disrespecting installations and the increase of rich assholes. RIP

    This is such a hater ass rant. lol Comparing it to Fyre Fest is such a wack take.
    I've been to Burning Man twice. It's a lot of fun. There's so much to experience and do that it is hard to relay that experience to others. Especially because the festival is what you make of it and different for everyone. There's lots of stages and art cars to dance, dope art installations, lots of camps to explore and meet people, and a temple to grieve over a lost loved one with others who are feeling the same pain. I wouldn't say it's this transcendental experience, but it's one of the best times I've ever had at a festival. There are things that I've experienced there that I don't think I could've gotten anywhere else.
    Most people that go don't really use their phones or take photos. If they do it's with a Polaroid. I think that's why BM gets such a bad rap. Most of the media covering it is from cringe influencers. There are weird ass hippies, people who can't separate spirituality from drugs, orgy tents, and other things that people hate on BM for, but those are really a small part of the entire thing. You can also avoid those things easily if you wanted to. Sad to see our Melon fall for the misrepresentation so easily.

    A couple weeks ago I was working my shitty minimum wage job when a young couple drove in with a super nice luxury RV. They had me refill their propane. I asked what they were up to and they said they were headed to burning man. I asked them if they bought the RV or were renting and the lady said her dad let her take it. So yeah the first impression I got of burning man is that you need a dad who’s willing to lend you a luxury RV to go.

      Fair enough to get that impression... Most people pitch a small tent. Many thousands of people take a bus into the event. It is still extremely expensive compared to most "music" festivals, but once you realize how mindblowing the countless art installations are and that every camp just wants you to come eat their food, drinks, or hundreds of other activities they are gifting, you start to see how worth it is. I like to tell people that the currency at Burning Man is not money, it's participation. If you are able to offer something that other people are interested in participating in, then you or your camp are considered the richest and most successful people at the event.

    80,000 people go to burning man... the two groups you named are a small portion of the people who go... the vast majority are regular people like myself who just want to escape, get silly, listen to great music, see some amazing art, find community, and have an adventure. Yes, it has changed a lot and become more mainstream in the last few years... and yes, it is a profoundly life changing event, but at the same time... it's reallly not that deep.

    • @delirium266
      @delirium266 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Agreed it's a huge event with tons of people of all different kinds. It's easy to dunk on if you just go on what you see on social media and the stereotypes but if you haven't been it's hard to understand the vibe. I went 15 years ago so maybe it's actually terrible now compared to then. No doubt there are a higher percentage of shitty people than there were now that it's trendy but I am very skeptical that the average person there represents either of the groups described here.
