  • A Strange Loop is the most Tony-nominated musical this season, with 11 nominations, including Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical. This show is incredible, and you have to go see it. Why? Well, you’ll have to watch this video to find out.
A Strange Loop (Music, Lyrics, and Book by Michael R. Jackson) stars Jaquel Spivey as Usher and L Morgan Lee, James Jackson, Jr., John-Michael Lyles, John-Andrew Morrison, Jason Veasey, and Antwayn Hopper as Thoughts 1-6.

I saw it last night, and this was the first show that made me retrospect on my own life so deeply. I have never wanted to cry so much in a theater.

Everyone can get something from the show. Growing up in the black church, seeing Tyler Perry plays (then films), it hits different. Truly, the lyrics to "Periodically" and "Memory Song" were enough for the Pulitzer alone. *subscribed*

There is verbatim dialogue in the play that also come from moments in my life. I got chills. I saw it twice. There's a line in the show about being scared: If isn't scary, then maybe it's not worth writing.

no because michael r jackson did not have to take us to church and break our hearts at the same time! i loved it!!!! loved your analysis! i saw it in the front row and the actors engaged with me in a way that I felt like i was getting a private concert! it resonated soo deeply with me. obviously idk how deeply the palm colored audiences members connected to it but the other black people in the audience were getting down!! i think i am in a strange loop of my own. great video!

I saw it last week and it is a brilliant, BRILLIANT creation. It is fearless, shocking, revolutionary, but besides all that it is stunningly entertaining. The audience I saw it with was roaring from start to finish and as you pointed out, largely white, and I think that’s because that’s who is most likely to see Broadway shows. Still there were young black people seated near me who were overwhelmingly moved and I hope more and more will see it as word spreads. It is mind blowing for anyone who is open to its message. People have see it to grasp what you, I, and everyone else who has seen it are talking about.

I saw a song from the musical on the
    Tony awards. It looked interesting
but I liked that it was something new
which is in short supply on Broadway.
When Broadway does revive a play
or musical it is usually a safe investment
like Funny Girl or The Music Man.
I am waiting for a revival of Ain't Supposed
to Die a Natural Death which is more
relevant now than when it premiered
on Broadway in the early 1970's.
I like your reviews. Keep up the awesome
    work!

What do you mean, you don’t understand how [Strange Loop] made it to Broadway?
I just saw the show on Juneteenth in LA, and LOVED it! No surprise that it was awarded the Pulitzer as well as Tony awards! Spectacular!

A really nice synopsis of the show and a very intelligent interpretation for individuals haven't seen it. What a great understanding of how we perceive people by the way we think of them. I hadn't thought of that before but you're spot on! Truly, one of the most raw, vulnerable pieces since Slave Play. Very few shows have that "staying power" in your mind after seeing it and I can't get it out of my head since the end of June. I'm a Cisgender, caucasian gay man but there were so many elements that could speak to SO MANY different types of people... queer people, BIPOC people, people of differing body sizes... it gave a voice and a powerful mirror to hold up to yourself and also to be represented on a major stage (literally and figuratively). Great video and I'll def be tuning in again!

I loved your review! I don't think I'll ever be able to see it live, though, since I live in the third world and sadly black narratives in my country are usually not considered "profitable enough" to make a local production. I hope one day I'll be able to see it live, but until then I'll look for a bootleg

I've only seen Phantom more than once because I wanted to go on a field trip in high school. Normally I'm fine seeing a show once unless a few years pass and I'm interested in seeing it again. If I could, I would've gotten tickets for the matinee and evening performances. I've been raving about it with everyone I know. Definitely seeing this again soon.

This was the best musical I have seen in many many years. The only issue I have is that I don’t think it spoke to people as much as I wish it would have, and it’s not the productions fault it’s just people that are not POC can’t understand our struggle. As a black gay man myself I felt so much of what was discussed, I actually cried during “Aids is gods punishment” because I’ve heard those exact words from my family and the church. When the show was over all I heard were people saying “it was so funny, I loved the part when…” but no one was having conversations, like real conversations. My boyfriend is Asian and I had to explain everything to him so we had a deep conversation when it was over. This was such an amazing thought provoking show and I plan to see it several more times.

I saw it at Playwrights Horizons and I totally thought it would be edited or whitewashed, or never produced on Broadway.

Hi great commentary. Yes yes yes. Saw it with back-up Usher. Oy just forgot his name. He was FANTASTIC. loved him and the entire cast and the music the music like a compilation like a distillation of so many shows before the show stands on. Angels in America Rent Hamilton old school Broadway musicals. Hip Hop Gospel RL RnB…
As a 1st gen Euro child called out for extermination my cousins uncles aunts grandparents millions more killed to achieve racial purity??? Da Jewish Holocaust survivors. As a WPOC I do understand rather I struggle to understand but south Bronx childhood helped that folding in of all children into the lap of god god of love embrace the beloved. I loved this show.

    A strange loop?
    Maybe. I don't know.
Here I am, listening to reviews of plays I can't afford to see, just because of the ideas. And I'm genuinely excited for the ideas. Can we change? Sure. How far do we change? That's a question that draws blood.
And then you ask about my perspective.
And I'm a pale ghost, but the only thing I really relate to, is scene with the partner who verbally abuses him. And a family that disowns him. I'm poor. Mentally ill. I have a fear of sex. And the BDSM community made sure I never forgot it.
Even in femdom, people can be judgemental, or hurt you in all the ways that a safe word can't protect you from.
But it was also the only community that understood and desired me at all. It was like home...kind of? So I'd run from one bad situation to the next. And sometimes, rarely, I'd find myself in a good situation...and just not know what to do? I'd learn what it was like to really be loved...usually after I'd made all my mistakes, and it was too late.
So on to something terrible again, only now I'm aware of how bad it is. And I'm trying to change things, but changing myself isn't enough. And I help people learn all the lessons I learned. And they become someone better, after its too late for us.
And I...just don't know what to do, anymore. I'm not even sure how much I really exist, anymore. Not literally, of course. But....has this vague answer really helped you in any way? Would it have been any better if I went into detail? All I can see are mistakes, not solutions.
And all I have are regrets.
