  • It's time for the Big Game! Here is a California classic - the Stanford Jonah!
    The "Stanford Jonah" was written in 1913 by Ted E. Haley as an entry for a song contest hosted by the Daily Californian. Though the song lost to the more known "Big C", the song gained prominence and popularity when the Glee Club travelled to Europe in 1914. Because of this, the song won the song contest that year. Today, it is a tune mostly played before and during games versus Cal's main rival - the Stanford Cardinal. The song is arranged by Robert O. Briggs.
    This song's melody, especially in the chorus, can be noticeable as being the same ones as the fight songs of Montana and Georgia Tech's "Up with the White and Gold", as well as the Naval Academy's "Up with the Navy". While Cal claims to have created this song in 1913, the University of Montana claimed to have created the melody, though their fight song was published a year later, in 1914. Georgia Tech's fight song "Up With the White and Gold" was said to be created in 1919, though Cal says that Tech created the song after the 1929 Rose Bowl, where both teams played. The composer of the melody is currently disputed to this day.
    And now, hope you enjoy! Go Bears and Beat Stanfurd!

    LYRICS
    Verse:
    When the training days are done,
    And the Big Game's just begun,
    And there's music in the air;
    When our team runs on the field,
    Stanford knows her fate is sealed,
    For the Golden Bear has left his lair.
    When the yells from lusty throats,
    Start to getting Stanford's goat,
    And the rooting section seems a howling mob,
    Then you grab your hat and shout,
    You let folks know you're about,
    For you know that Stanford Jonah's on the job.
    Chorus:
    So then it's
    Up with the Blue and Gold,
    Down with the Red;
    California's out for a victory.
    We'll drop our battle-axe on Stanford's head. (Chop!)
    When we meet her, our team will surely beat her.
    Down on the Stanford Farm there'll be no sound, (Shh!)
    When our Oski rips through the air.
    Like our friend Mister Jonah,
    Stanford's team will be found
    In the tummy of the Golden Bear!
    (repeat chorus)

    Cal has so many songs. This one and their main fight song are the two best
