    Pinnacle of Detroit car craft, in remarkable condition, they all have a vague smell of must,vinyl, rubber, seems like this enthusiast has quite a collection! This era of cars gone forever, not to be repeated!

    Truly excited to see this year/make of car featured. Not only an original car but what a great paint color and interior on this particular car to make it likely a one of a kind survivor. I have a black and white 55 Montclair Sun Valley with the main options of PS, PB, PW, Power Seats and Factory Air. I just love my car for what it is and love this Monterey as much. Thank you Dennis for showing this car and continuing to preserve it. Thanks again Lou for another excellent job with his car. There is something about seeing these cars in a mid-west setting with the big trees and beautiful grass that even further enhances the beauty of these cars.

      Yes. I recall lots of details. My Dad picked me up to see the oil bath air filter, though I’ve seen YT videos of a 54, I believe, fitted with a flat, triangular paper element housing. Must have been a replacement part. Oil bath filters were around 30 years later. My 84 Peugeot 505 had one.
      Parts must not have lasted as long. I recall him struggling to replace the muffler after only about 3 years.
      BTW, when I was even younger, I knew all the car brands and years. Nowadays, to tell many apart, I have to go close enough to read the name or logo.

      Sadly, there are almost zero left in California nowadays, and worse yet, many younger people think they can't be driven, which, of course, is ridiculous, as even the slowest 40s cars, let alone 50s cars, can exceed 80 MPH.

    • @crazycar4015
      @crazycar4015 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelbenardo5695 As a Gen Z kid myself I hope when I graduate college I can be one of the very few of us who appreciate these older vehicles and take the time to restore and daily drive them. The only car I know of from this era that can't match highway speeds is the Nash Metropolitan. And even then I'm sure I can do something to make it so that it can do 60 or 70 properly.

    Thanks for sharing this beautiful Merc. My parents had a 55 Ford town sedan the same color combination as his Montclair. It had the armstrong steering too and my mom drove it. The steering wheels were huge to give extra leverage when you were moving slowly. Too bad people aren't crazy about Mercurys or American brands in general any more. The streets look like Tokyo now. Only 3 American cars on my street. My Impala SS, a Buick Lesabre and a Chevy Equinox on a block with 40 houses on it. What a shame people don't support American brands and labor unions anymore.

      I feel exactly the same way. I just can't understand how anybody can prefer a cramped rough-riding uncomfortable impossible to fix foreign car over a nice roomy gorgeous American car, and I can't see why so many nowadays think working people should be paid starvation wages. It is truly a damn shame, almost as if a hostile foreign power has brainwashed the younger generations in an effort to destroy our country from within.

  • @montymatilda

    What a find! Very special car! The "fake" exhaust tips are actually not. They are exhaust deflectors the force the exhaust to the ground instead of straight back when installed properly. People used them on cars parked in the garage to keep the carbon and other things in the water from spraying on the garage door. Very difficult to clean. Also kept you cleaner when at the trunk of the car when it was running, it just sprayed down on the ground.
    I learned something. I never knew that there were 2 different roof styles. I wonder if it was like that in 54 and 56.

    • @loucostabile
      @loucostabile  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is what my dad would have called, a cream puff! And I would be hard-pressed to bother disagreeing with him. The green one too! Not a fan of the color of this one, but it doesn't hurt it any either. It's like this., if someone handed me the keys to this car, I would gladly take it and not complain. Only an insane person what escaped from the looney bin would dare refuse this car. Engine and engine bay so clean you could feed a family off it. But then, only an escapee from the looney bin would trash an engine like that - so - let's just keep it away from the crazytown people. Lou - an awesome super classy car! I also like this subtle coral color more than the very pink looking proper coral. The original interior is breathtaking. The one major turn-off with me is when someone restores these interiors and just go with a white tuck-and-roll vinyl insert. That classic mid-century pattern insert just looks so right and so inviting. You find the nicest collectors Lou with impeccable taste!

    I love the 55-56 Mercury's. I don't remember ever seeing a lot of them on the road. This car is 6 volt and I think Ford went to 12 volt in 56.

      Interestingly,I briefly had a **56;FORD TBIRD Engine/4 Door/ FLORIDA CAR, / Deluxe INT/ a.c. , LOW MILEAGE; seems like it was 12 V, ETC. UNFORTUNATELY, WAS TOTALLED A FEW WEEKS AFTER I BOUGHT IT: planning out the upgrades restorations.( Paint , body perfect)...often wondered how many of those were made .....? Always thought 56 FOMOCO WERE esp good looking...particularly with good options.....etc.

      You are correct. Did you notice how easily this 6 volt car started? Proof that it is not necessary to convert to 12 volts.

    Hi, Lou! This Mercury was definitely a great buy for Dennis, although I'm not really a fan of Continental kits. The color and that jazzy interior are just exquisite, and so is that three-tiered fan-shaped instrument panel. The '55 Chevy's instrument panel had that shape too, but with black facing. Thanks to both of you for getting us lost in the '50s tonight!

    I like Mercurys! Between my dad and I, we had five of them. I don't like the continental kits. They basically hang off the back of the car and mess with the aerodynamics of the car. They are in the way when accessing the trunk, in 5he case of the 56 Thunderbird, they are in the way of refueling the car. On this car you opened the trunk and there was a spare tire in the trunk. i can't imagine the need for two spare tires. If I owned the car, I think I would take the continental kit and the extension parts for the rear bumper off the car and sell them at the car show to someone that wants to add the kit to his car. Other than that, I love the car and would add it to my collection if I had one.

    I bought a 55 Mercury Custom in 57 - great car. Power steering - what is that? The Imperial may have had it, but it wasn't until somewhere around the 60s that it was available. Who needed power brakes, boy did we ever. Despite its namesake - it wasn't speedy. But it got me from one Naval base to another.

      Power steering debuted in the 1951 Chrysler. Power brakes in 52, also on Chrysler. We got along just fine. We actually used our muscles then for more than just playing with computers and cell phones.

    Beautiful car but there is an authenticity problem. I am very old, experienced these cars when they were new and can tell you there was not that much engine noise except maybe on a Crosley. My Grandfather's brand new 1955 Buick had neither engine noise nor exhaust noise, the only thing you heard was the whine of the Variable Pitch Dynaflow transmission.
