Someone else commented that you can use a 2-1-2-1 pattern in the increase row instead of 2-1-3-1 and end up with 72 stitches. When I used 11 DC in the first round, I ended up with 76. 72 would have been better, I think. It was still too large, even with the H hook.
Love your design. Your are a good instructor. I have watched a lot of crochet tutorial on TH-cam but you are the only one who hold the hook right. I have been crocheting since age 7 and hold the hook the same way. I cannot really see how you have the yarn on your left hand. Thank you for wonderful tutorial. I am new to crocheting yarn. I crochet only the size 8 or 10 cotton yarn with metal size 9 hook. I crochet a bedspread and took me 5 years to finish my project.

I thought this was really fun, definitely an intermediate level. For some reason, my 84 row stitches were really difficult to get in. I might try this again once I gain more knowledge.
I think it would be helpful in the pattern, in your description of the split fpdc, to indicate that it's done in the next stitch 2 rows below, not the next stitch of the previous row. Some beginners might think to do it in the sc row, since those are the "next" stitches.

I would advise using a number 4 or 4.25 hook if using 4 yarn.Im.not sure what size yarn Marley was using.size small hat is turning out too large for most crocheted who commented.

At the beginning of round three you made two double crochets in the first stitch, one DC in the next and 2, 1....I did mine that way and ended up with 2 DC in the last stitch of the previous round (stitches 35 and 36). However it looks like you had one DC in the last stitch from the previous round. Where did I go wrong?
Hello! I'm not sure exactly where you went wrong but I can try to help! There should be 24 sts in Rnd 2, so that's an even number. So you increase in every other stitch - 2 sts in each odd numbered st, 1 st in each even numbered st. Does that help?
After round 7 I ended up with 90 stitches instead of 84 and I followed the pattern and I had the correct amount in all of the previous rounds, maybe I accidentally increased?
Most likely! There are 12 pattern repeats and 6 increases means you are likely working 3 sc in each ch-2 section instead of alternating between 2 and 3. :)
I'm a beginner crocheter wanting to move up to the next level. I'm trying to make this hat to give as a gift. I've spent the entire weekend trying to count up to eighty-four stitches, often falling short. I've ripped out and re-done the same stitches dozens of times. I've watched the same section of the video over and over again, and am going to try slow motion. If I didn't find your voice and the color of the yarn you use in this video as soothing as I do, I would be a basket case. Despite the issues, I'm enjoying the process but am starting to suspect that a house call or intervention might be in order.
Very confused by the wool size. You state 10-12 ply wool for UK. 10 ply is Aran (worsted) and 12 ply is chunky. Which is it as you look like your using double weight yarn?

Okay so I love this hat, Love the texture, love this stitch. Only one problem, it isn't going into hat mode. It looks more like a pancake in fact. I followed this pattern with your video so I am unsure how this happened and where I went wrong. Help!!!
This hat is very pretty but it does come out too big. I decided to work with 72 stitches instead of the 84 from the pattern. To do this, on round 6 instead of the 3-2 increases in each 2chain space I did 2 in each.
So I repeating this pattern because the first hat was wayyyy too big. I’m making sure I count all the stiches and I’m at my 14th row and it’s already looking to be 4 inches too big and I’m wondering if I should continue or not. I know my count is correct this time!
Gave up, too big, even small size, my hubby has a big head it would be lucky to fit him. loved the pattern though, maybe try some other time with 8ply and smaller hook.
It shouldn't make too much of a difference, other than the feel of the yarn itself. :) The fuzzier the yarn though of course, the harder the cables are to see, so that's something to keep in mind too. :)
I am at round 11 I am a little confused this is only the 3rd hat I have ever attempted. So we are sc into every stich and then one sc in every chain and then sc into the stich following the chain also?

I have made one of her beanies and it turned out way to long longer than what hers looked like, its more of a slouch beanie and i didnt even go as long as she said, but i do like her very much

I'm a beginner crocheter wanting to move up to the next level. I'm trying to make this hat to give as a gift. I've spent the entire weekend trying to count up to eighty-four stitches, often falling short. I've ripped out and re-done the same stitches dozens of times. I've watched the same section of the video over and over again, and am going to try slow motion. If I didn't find your voice and the color of the yarn you use in this video as soothing as I do, I would be a basket case. Despite the issues, I'm enjoying the process but am starting to suspect that a house call or intervention might be in order.

Okay so I love this hat, Love the texture, love this stitch. Only one problem, it isn't going into hat mode. It looks more like a pancake in fact. I followed this pattern with your video so I am unsure how this happened and where I went wrong. Help!!!

This hat is very pretty but it does come out too big. I decided to work with 72 stitches instead of the 84 from the pattern. To do this, on round 6 instead of the 3-2 increases in each 2chain space I did 2 in each.

Hat sides to tend to take a long time to tuck in sometimes. :) If it's just not coming together, you may need to check your gauge.
So I repeating this pattern because the first hat was wayyyy too big. I’m making sure I count all the stiches and I’m at my 14th row and it’s already looking to be 4 inches too big and I’m wondering if I should continue or not. I know my count is correct this time!
It sounds like it's a gauge issue - have you tried a smaller hook?
Gave up, too big, even small size, my hubby has a big head it would be lucky to fit him. loved the pattern though, maybe try some other time with 8ply and smaller hook.

How much would it alter the hat if you use a different yarn? Like the red heart amore instead of the chic sheep?
It shouldn't make too much of a difference, other than the feel of the yarn itself. :) The fuzzier the yarn though of course, the harder the cables are to see, so that's something to keep in mind too. :)
I am at round 11 I am a little confused this is only the 3rd hat I have ever attempted. So we are sc into every stich and then one sc in every chain and then sc into the stich following the chain also?
Cause there are 2 stiches on either side of the front posts and the 2 stitches on either side of the double crochets and then the chains inbetween.
