- Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is an IMAX®-shot epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.
The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt as his wife, biologist and botanist Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer. Oscar® winner Matt Damon portrays General Leslie Groves Jr., director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey, Jr. plays Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.
Academy Award® nominee Florence Pugh plays psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie plays theoretical physicist Edward Teller, Michael Angarano plays Robert Serber and Josh Hartnett plays pioneering American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence.
Oppenheimer also stars Oscar® winner Rami Malek and reunites Nolan with eight-time Oscar® nominated actor, writer and filmmaker Kenneth Branagh.
The cast includes Dane DeHaan (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets), Dylan Arnold (Halloween franchise), David Krumholtz (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Matthew Modine (The Dark Knight Rises).
The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan.
Oppenheimer is filmed in a combination of IMAX® 65mm and 65mm large-format film photography including, for the first time ever, sections in IMAX® black and white analogue photography.
Nolan’s films, including Tenet, Dunkirk, Interstellar, Inception and The Dark Knight trilogy, have earned more than $5 billion at the global box office and have been awarded 11 Oscars and 36 nominations, including two Best Picture nominations.

Imagine being in your 20s and having 3 titans of your field being this complimentary of your work.
It's called marketing. Quid pro quo. We market you, you market us. Insiders promoting other insiders.
@@punchforpound2808 I doubt cilian murphy and robert downey jr need Florence Pugh to market them
That's true now but it goes in cycles. @@turningmememachine7256
Jennifer Lawrence is better
@@watermelonlover745While Jennifer Lawrence is a great actress they are both very different. They shouldn’t be compared.
Everybody's entitled to their own opinion of course, but I gotta say Florence did a masterful job in this film, as she always does. Brilliant actress. So underrated. I just wish they had made more room in the script to dive deeper into Jean Tatlock's life and her impact on Oppenheimer, because it does feel a bit like they shallowed her character in the film.
The film was inspired by the book. I would say they did more in the film than in book in terms of her character so I do not feel that they shallowed her, in contrary, I feel these scenes are brilliant compared to the book.
@@Slowlivingvlogbyme Yes, I've read the book, it was recently released in my country for the 1st time along with the film, but there's also another one which sadly isn't available in Polish called "An Atomic Love Story: The Extraordinary Women in Robert Oppenheimer's Life" by Shirley Streshinsky and I was told it covers a lot more of Tatlock's life, giving the readers much deeper insight into how important she was for Oppenheimer and how her actions impacted his decisions. I would love to read that one too, but my English is probably not good enough to handle a book.
@@r3miPL thanks for this information I was not aware of another book. I will definitely check it.
Pugh's character was my least favorite in the film, but she is a good actress.
Nah. Tatlock was as shallow as Pugh. My movie group avoids anything she’s in.
Jean Tatlock: "I told you Robert, I don't want flowers!"
J. Robert Oppenheimer: "Then what do you want exactly?"
- This represents how my skills with my crushes are like, maybe even worse -
I feel your pain
I thought she said no more fucking flowers
@@terrondt Or that
That "relationship"/affair definitely humanized Oppenheimer in a way I hadn't seen before. Historical figures like him r pretty much seen as nothing more than just that, but u realize Oppenheimer was human with his own desires, not perfect.
Exactly. This film definitely humanized a lot of these historical figures.
Oh, so we're saying "cheating" is "humanizing" now? Made me hate him.
@@alexbush714 No It wasn't the intention of the original poster. What they mean is- usually,we keep historical figures on a pedestal and perceive them as a saint,as someone who can do no wrong. But this movie brought out things like this. So it "humanizes" him in a way. Cheating is still part of the many human experiences and doing so doesn't make him less of a human, objectively,no matter if it is morally wrong. But that doesn't mean that we excuse his wrong doings.
@@akasuki9614 perfect explanation & well articulated, thank you ;)

I didnt buy the chair routine for a minute. It was too staged. Like a play would handle sex. It seemed so forced and unnatural.

This was the worst movie I've ever seen! 3/4 of the film should have been edited!
Such an overrated actress. She was totally outclassed by everyone else in Oppenheimer.
Is she to blame? Nolan gave her a totally inconsequential role
Thank you, I’m a absolute history buff but awa
Not really a fair judgment, she probably only had 5-10 minutes of screen time, and she was very memorable with such little time.
@@space_1073 she's in everything at the moment and totally mid in it all. Emily Blunt absolutely crushed her with acting in this.
@@unscentednapalm8547 It's so weird to see it as a competition dude. And I disagree. Florence Pugh does some of the best subtle facial acting I've ever seen.
Unbelievable that there are some people who hate her. Even if she had a small role she is fantastic. And next year she will nail her role in Dune
Yess agree with you
People don’t like her?? I thought she was killing it?
@@r2d2rxr there are some people who made some inappropriate comments. Especially on her body.
@@giuliadibenedetto7780 I was excited for Dune Part 2..until I saw she was it in. Seriously no idea why she's in everything at the moment...she's so mid.
she can't act. People are just overrating her
"like a raw nerve." Oh, I love that phrase. And I love any performance that inspires such a compliment.
I've loved Pugh's performance ever since watching " Little Women." She is fierce, direct, vulnerable, so authentic, and charismatic.
Yes!!! She stole the show in Little Women. After that movie I wanted to see everything she did. Her scenes in “Oppenheimer” were pure gold.😍
@0:11 The character never struck me as knowing what she wanted. In fact, her tragedy was that she actually had no idea what she wanted from Oppenheimer. She rejected every romantic advance he made, trying to shield her own emotions from him, yet could not handle it when he actually moved away. Calling him, yet screaming at him not to answer, these are all signs of a deeply confused and troubled mind. Her throwing the flowers in the bin every time were to me a sign that she was desperately trying to tell herself that this relationship was only physical, yet her emotions for him were apparent in every scene she has with him. To me, Oppenheimer working for the capitalist regime and never embracing communism meant that she could never reconcile her own ideology with her feelings for him and it ended up killing her in the end.
Well said, your insight is enlightning
very well said but in reality she had a lot of inner conflict about her own sexuality… which is something chris nolan decided to erase completely
Jean was a tragic character. She was intelligent, fierce, outspoken, ahead of her time. But like many intelligent women she fell in love with the wrong man and died heartbroken. Florence was fantastic in the role. ❤
I love that she is getting more work and recognition she deserves.
Truly and up and coming talent in Hollywood
The problem I had with Oppenheimer's Jean Tatlock character it wasn't the acting they left out some parts of the real person's story which explained why they never ended up together. Yes, there was the issue that she was a soviet sympathiser, they had different ideologies, and yes she had an affair with Oppenheimer but she was a closeted lesbian. She committed suicide because she couldn't cope being a lesbian. She was also a Psychiatrist. For her it was a sign of being mentally ill. It's a shame that the character's struggle with her sexuality wasn't that clear in the film. It's implied during the first sex scene with Oppenheimer when she didn't orgasm and when she told him that I can't be what you need me to be before he married Kitty. It's a shame this wasn't added to the film. It would of added more complexity to her character.
Florence Pugh looks so beautiful in the movie. With that hair style, she could have been Peggy Carter in the MCU.
I hope people look her up either before or after seeing the film. She was a truly fascinating person who led quite an eccentric life, this film barely scratched the surface in terms of her character!
0:10 “Jean Tatlock was blunt”
No, Kitty Oppenheimer was Blunt
I loved every bit of her scene. She was wonderful in this movie!
Everybody has an opinion of course but I cant believe some ppl hated her.
I just wished that Nolan would have delved deeper into Jean's story and her impact on Oppenheimer. Florence has too much potential and they wasted a lot of it in the movie by giving her so little screen presence.
Anyways, Florence killed it, as she always does. She is a terrific actress, so underrated. She had really little screentime and she nailed it.
Im really looking forward seeing her in DUNE2.
She's so mid. Was excited for Dune 2 until I saw she was in it.
think we got a little too much screen presence 💀
It's about Oppenheimer
@@breakfastonuranus I KNOWWWW. That is not my point, I loved the movie, I think its a masterpiece.
It was the most captivating character and storyline of the entire film. And, I really think all the credit goes to how flo played it. So insanely talented.
I know! I am so shocked she didn't get a Golden Globe or Oscar nomination for her role in this movie.
Christopher Nolan should do a horror movie
In a way, Oppenheimer is a horror movie. It’s a horrific telling of how atomic weapons will impact our future.
He should do James Bond.
You know Inception was once planned to be a horror movie but due to the popularity of the dark knight he decided not to and make it more like it .....
@@imnotjinxed4290 would have been better as one.
Sounds like they feel sorry for her. The sex scenes did not fit in to this movie. Completely out of place.
Weird Hollywood right of passage nonsense. Nolan and the execs doing. Florence was great.
Sad story of women who just wanna love and be loved
I watched it yesterday on streaming. I didn’t watch it during its theatrical release since I had read reviews that it was long and tedious. But since my expectations were set low, I really enjoyed it and thought it was engaging and extremely entertaining. I loved it. My only criticism was of the character of Jean Tatlock where almost all of her scenes involved nudity and sex. In fact she had gone to medical school and was a psychiatrist. I wish those nude scenes were not included but had reflected her as the highly achieved person that she really was and not just a nymph.
I had a similar feeling. Kitty was also much more than just Oppenheimer's wife. My primary criticism of the film (which I thought was brilliant) was that both female characters were reduced to their sexual relationship with Oppenheimer, at the expense of their other contributions. But both Flo and Emily did a great job with the material they were given.
Every time Jean showed up in a scene, I was HOOKED
One of the good actress in movie industry. First saw her on midsommar she was amazing
She was amazing in it. Blunt & yet vulnerable. Anybody hating her for it is a loser. Poor excuse.
personally i didn’t really feel the love between these characters. it was more like an obsession. but i wouldn’t call it love
From her standpoint seems like a friends with bennies or bootycall. Oppenheimer wanted more but she obviously didn’t
Exactly
She’s perfect!

Seeing this clip I can now notice shes had her upper lip pumped after this movie😂😂😂
She is the most beautiful woman in the world to me! Id love to get to know her on a personal level if the opportunity is ever given.. I've been saving myself long time now for one worthy of my ❤️🔥
I think she gets way too much praise for all her roles. It is like she cannot put a foot wrong. But she does put many feet wrong. She is good. Sometimes very good. But nowhere near worth the praise she gets from everywhere.
i get what you mean. i find her ok, but i need to see a bit more variety. i think i liked her earlier performances better, before she became super famous

Did Emily did something in her face? Sorry for asking?
An amazing movie very touching
I don't hate Florence's performance, but I hate the character and how gross seeing the relationship makes me feel. And I hate that her talents were wasted on such short screen time and the majority of that screen time just being naked in these fundamentally aromantic and upsetting scenes. I think that's what people feel when they say they hated it.
Even though a small role, a big part
However good or bad this actress is I am so sick and tired of her being in absolutely everything.
It's a great movie, I liked it very much
Post coital 😂😂 English are so proper
I think Oppenheimer will be a clean sweep in the Oscars as everything was done to the limit.

She’s one of the greatest actresses of our time no doubt
Jean Tatlock’s character was difficult for me to understand, to the point that I rewound scenes to look for a wedding band or catch something I missed previously. Maybe it was her communist ideology/involvement & the risks associated with it, maybe it was psychological but she too “seemed uncommitted.”
Why people hate Florence? She's so underrated

Everyone loves her. And I dont know why.
@@winterbird4447have you seen midsommar?
Do you know the meaning of underrated? Florence is a critically acclaimed actress who has top notch roles under her belt.
She isn’t underrated at all just because a select few people of the general audience may not like her acting.
I feel that cheating on ones husband or wife has became a tradition in this world now 🙁🙁
The older I get, the more I detest applause.
Florence pugh is 28 while cilian murphy is 47. Oppenheimer is only 10 years older than Jean Tatlock. The twenty year gap in casting is excessive and reinforces the misogynistic "shelf life" for actresses
