Program Notes:
"Mosaic" for Flute Ensemble takes inspiration from various cultures that
feature different types of flutes in their music. These include the pan flutes of the Solomon Islands, the Chinese dizi, the Sundanese suling, the Armenian sring and blul, the Native American flute, and the Andean siku. Throughout the work, I attempted to capture different elements from these cultures' music and combine them in ways that complement each other. You will hear melodic quotes, including the traditional Chinese song "Plum Blossom Melody," the Polynesian children's song "Tongo," and the Navajo song "Shí naashá." You will also hear many stylistic elements from across the world, including the dance-like music of the Solomon Islands, the improvisatory style of Armenian music, the parallel voicings of Andean music, and the gamelan degung of West Java.
I hope that "Mosaic" captures these elements in a way that is respectful to the music and styles of these different cultures. The intention behind this work is to pay respect and show admiration for music that we many not be exposed to through standard repertoire. -Clint Bleil
