I remember hearing George Miller say that when writing Fury Road, he had developed enough story for a whole other movie. It sounds like this is that movie. Probably the reason as to why he did this first than to continue the story from where the first film ended.
Apparently Miller wants to do one more movie about Max so let's root hard for serious box office for Furiosa. The movie cost about $170 million to make and definitely needs to sell some tickets.
I am with you on the girl boss roles, and I feel that way about stoic, chip on his shoulder, plot armor heavy male characters, too. Don't give me a bland, invincible hero. Give me someone who can get their butt kicked and sometimes they have retreat and go lick their wounds and rethink their strategy before they proceed with their next plan of attack. I am glad you enjoyed the film, James. Have a fantastic weekend!
The prequel form deflates all tension, but that doesn't stop it from being a maximal piece of heavy metal sculpture on par with some of the finest ever made.
Great review, James, caught a matinee today and I totally agree with you on this. It really didn't go anywhere we haven't already been, and it is overlong, but damn, do I live this dystopian universe, and hope George Miller gets revisit one more time.
The point you were making about how the fandom hasn’t grown since FuryRoad,I believe it has but that fandom was disappointed it wasn’t Charlize Theron. I think the majority’s first thought was to catch it streaming and probably won’t give it a chance at the theater. ( hoping people show up🤞🏼) At first I felt the same way but I’m glad I saw this, it was really good, I had a great time and everyone was great. But I’d love to see Theron as Furiosa continue her story on the big screen.
Can't wait to see this. I agree with you about stories moving forward. If you're going to do a prequel, at least do a Better Call Saul present day story ending.
I saw it this afternoon and thought it was pretty great! Not quote Fury Road but as good as I was hoping it would be. Anya and Hemsworth were great and I really loved getting to see new places in this Mad Max universe
This definitely felt like more of a deep dive into this incredible setting. It really fleshed out the universe in amazing ways. But I'm a little worried that the running time is going to take a bite out of the box office.

Epic movie. Witnessed it in Imax. This was phenomenal. I have no idea how you believed it was too long, as I was able to not pee for the entire film. Although, through the credits, I did have to stand to adjust my bladder. Wonderful movie. Please let me know what you think. 10/10 Wonderful and awesome movie. Ties Directly to Fury ROad. Doof Warrior and MAD MAX ARE BOTH in the movie, and not just the credits. Grace either didn't watch, or fell asleep.

Blows my mind how a director who is 79 years can still make such potent movies with such intensity. He makes so many filmmakers half his age seem totally forgettable by comparison.
I'm not only a die hard Mad Max fan but Tom Hardy is my favorite actor so his absence is my one gripe. But Hemsworth made up for that absence and I'm so happy he did!
Hemsworth seemed to be having a blast. I saw him present at CinemaCon alongside Miller and he talked about how in his household growing up they used to watch George Miller moves on a loop.
Looking forward to seeing this........but, my god, every clip I've seen looks like its saturated with CGI and general digital sheen. Will never happen but I would love one more Max movie that hasn't been within a million miles of computers and digital cameras.
That's a bummer. Theaters are struggling so much these days that a lot of them are starting to fall to pieces. As far as bad experiences go, my theater decided to pause the movie about 15 minutes in and start over because some late arrivals were complaining. Personally, this is my all time favorite franchise, I'll watch anything based in Millers Wasteland and I'm all for it's expansion, so long as they don't write Max off completely.
So far I've heard nothing but good things from folks who have had a chance to see it. It blew the roof off at the New York Film Festival when I saw it. Fingers crossed, it will be a monster hit on Netflix.
Tbh at the end when Furiosa is chasing dementus in the car she full throttles over multiple tall dunes and the car doesn’t get a millimeter of air time just cgi stuck to the ground even the sand looks fake for some reason
To touch on what you said about this film not having new elements added on top of fury road, the style an what not. I agree, but what the film did great was that we needed more of this world explored and we got that for sure! The look and way the scenes and action is shot is familiar. It just compliments fury road and is an extension of it.
LOVED IT🖤... I hope next one includes Mel Gibson, as I saw in another review, it would make sense if "Max" from Fury Road (who barely talks) was actually the grown-up wild boy from Mad Max Road Warrior
I really truly enjoyed it. And Anya Taylor Joy knocked it out of the part. I felt the ominous, implacable march of it...just the tone a Mad Max movie should have. And I really appreciated her cutting that arm off. Very nice nod to Mad Max.
Agreed. I will sometimes tear movies apart over bad or sub par FX, and ive heard people rip on this movie for exactly that. But i wasnt distracted in the least withnthis film. It almost felt purpouseful. Like Miller was leaning into it, at times. Like, 'fuck it', ill incorporate it into the overall aesthetic. Gimme a little more of that green screen lol.
I absolutely loved it. Sure its not as great as the _great_ Fury Road, and it's a bit baggy in a couple of spots, but it's sooo much fun, the performances are great, and it looks and sounds fantastic. Plus, there are three brilliant action sequences in it that are on par with those in Fury Road.
the movie is great, planning to see it again! It’s different from fury road, less intense I would say, but still has some incredible moments and adds a lot of context to fury road. They should have done double screenings I wouldn’t mind watching Fury Road right after!
@@geekinwithJamesHancock But is there an effing film this year that can hold a candle to “Dune Part Two”?? That film is pretty much krazy glued on my number one spot. I can’t even budge it.
Excellent question, but I'd struggle to make a satisfactory ranking without seeing Furiosa at least few more times. The rest of the movies are burned into my brain. But the only one in the mix that I have a lot of problems with is Thunderdome due to all the kids in the cast.
Yes, it's a bit too long. But it's a kick-ass revenge flick, pure and simple. That's what I believe makes it different. It's a character study and origin story, true, but at its heart it's a revenge flick. The world is familar, but I think some of the action seqiences were doing something new and exciting in their design. The longer action set pieces really were set up like mini stories with a beginning, middle and end. Lots of great tiny details and flourishes that set George Miller apart from most action directors. I found myself very locked in for this movie, but yeah, it's also too long.
Saw this film in IMAX yesterday..story is pale but the action scenes and cinematography are stylish and captivating .A must watch... found it better than Dune 2 in terms of action.
watched last night and loved it. it checks all the boxes. we get to see the universe expanded, new characters, new war tech and tactics...the rear of the new war machine with the spinning blades and chained flails. great stunts. the cgi it had was as good as it gets or at least good enough that i wasn't looking for it so i could shit on it. the story was great as well as the acting. as with all other movies like this that checks my boxes i'll be revisiting it many many more times through the years and hopefully whatever's the next installment from this universe is.
Nothing can ever be Fury Road again, so its hard to compare. I really liked this but Fury Road's bar is so high in my opinion, I'm not sure what he could have done to match it. When it "dragged" a bit I just had to keep telling myself it's its own thing. I'm glad he didn't de-age Charlie but if this ran right into FR then it should have went from the girl, to Anya for a couple of chapters, then Charlize for the final chapter.
Fury Road is overrated tripe. If you want a REAL action movie, Terminator 2 is the one. STILL the greatest action film ever, after 33 years. Fury Road doesn't come remotely close to it.
@@gonesavage Not for me it didnt. The action just doesn't have that level of excitement and thrill that T2 does. I like the chase scenes in cities, not deserts. It looks more spectacular.
It’s a good movie but I am a bit disappointed with how noticeable the cgi is compared to fury road. Found it pulling me out of the movie and thought I was watching fast x at some points. Fury road was a 10 this was a 8
Yeah I'm not a fan of the digital car crashes either. They do nothing for me. I much prefer a less ambitious shot but with real cars with crazy drivers like Grant Page behind the wheel.
I understand but they simply could not make this film the same way they did Fury Road. It really bothered me in the trailer but somehow in the theatre it wasn't as bad for me. I know what you mean, though.
Overall I liked it, the story and development of characters were good . What was disappointing the CGI, I was very aware of its presence in this movie, fury road you had to pull apart stunt vs CGI, this movie you have to find the stunt in the CGI. CGI dampens down the stunt. Still good but fury road was the movie, nobody wanted but needed. The reason this movie leans into more CGI was due to the nightmare time George had with the studio and on set, George coming from a medial background was very safety driven. Apparently he had lost a lot of weight due to stress and been in the desert for 100days. The movie was shelved with only the 2-3 acts. Allowed 3weeks for acts 1-4. I’m guessing the studio pushed him to more CGI on this and his age. Think he wanted to tell this story. The future of mad max is their, but not with George, it’s his baby, but I think Christopher Nolan with Tom hardy could do an excellent “the wastelands” story, new characters need to be brought in, the feel of the movie has to change. Time to move the plot forward. Got 10yrs before hardly grow out of this role
I thought Chapters 4 & 5 could have been combined. I feel like the movie misses hitting the climax right at its emotional peak, but 2 1/2 hours inside the imagination of George Miller is never a bad thing.
Definitely give it a go if you're interested. Miller apparently wants to make one more movie about Max so this very expensive movie will need to sell some tickets.
Same here. Seeing it after the Road Warrior was one of my biggest disappointments I had in life. Saw it once in the cinema and then never after. Thunderdome for me is like a poor Spielbergian attempt to copycat a Mad Max movie. No nostalgia factor can change this and I hate this movie.
I'm definitely planning on seeing it a few more times. I couldn't stop thinking about Furiosa last night and had no choice but to watch Fury Road again.
Perhaps I could have phrased it better by saying I was feeling the length, but I have no problem with long movies. I saw Bertolucci's complete cut of '1900' in the theater and that runs over 5 hours.
Fury Road just looks to clean and generic. This looks the same way. There are so many elements in Mad Max and the Road Warrior that are raw and organic. I think it has to do with money, the actors and the practical effects versus cgi. Yes I watched Fury Road in a theatre. Tom Hardy is an excellent actor..but Mel Gibson just is.

Good call on Godzilla but as far as my inner bias goes, I've admitted many times on this channel that I'm not an obsessive Godzilla fan.
Very good movie. I was a little underwhelmed. Hard to follow fury road. Hemsworth was kinda doing a slightly less comical captain Jack sparrow.
A hot mess in my opinion, Furiosa gets sided in her own story and doesnt add nothing to Fury, yet, Miller cant make a boring flick
"Can't make a boring flick," is the perfect way to describe Miller's career.
Why is it to long what scenes would you cut?
I thought Chapters 4 & 5 could have been combined. I feel like the movie misses hitting the climax right at its emotional peak, but 2 1/2 hours inside the imagination of George Miller is never a bad thing.
We just need a tom hardy mad max Saga ok tell us mad max storys theirs a few lol
Couldnt disagree more about the length! I coulda sat there another hour.
Now I mos def will see it -
Definitely give it a go if you're interested. Miller apparently wants to make one more movie about Max so this very expensive movie will need to sell some tickets.
I still can't watch thunderdome 💚🇬🇧🌱 it should be removed from the series imo, looking forward to this🤙
Same here. Seeing it after the Road Warrior was one of my biggest disappointments I had in life. Saw it once in the cinema and then never after. Thunderdome for me is like a poor Spielbergian attempt to copycat a Mad Max movie. No nostalgia factor can change this and I hate this movie.
I like Thunderdome right up to the point when all the kids show up and then I lose all interest. Furiosa is definitely superior.
@@geekinwithJamesHancock the kids & Tina turner for me...💚🇬🇧🌱
On par with FR
I'm definitely planning on seeing it a few more times. I couldn't stop thinking about Furiosa last night and had no choice but to watch Fury Road again.
Long movies are not inherently bad so the movie is to long is a meaningless criticism to me without more context.
Perhaps I could have phrased it better by saying I was feeling the length, but I have no problem with long movies. I saw Bertolucci's complete cut of '1900' in the theater and that runs over 5 hours.
I thought it was better than Fury Road
Fury Road just looks to clean and generic. This looks the same way. There are so many elements in Mad Max and the Road Warrior that are raw and organic. I think it has to do with money, the actors and the practical effects versus cgi. Yes I watched Fury Road in a theatre. Tom Hardy is an excellent actor..but Mel Gibson just is.
thanks for explaining the ending to a movie that hasnt even come out yet. helps alot
I seen it today.. may 23rd
I bought a ticket like anyone else and I gave spoiler warnings with time codes. Not sure why you're annoyed that I discussed the ending.

Kathleen Kennedy is camping ⛺️ outside Bob Iger’s office, “We need to buy the Mad Max franchise now!” 😆
Lol, I would kill myself.
Oh HELL NO!!!!
Fourth baby boo boo child
6:25 Hmmmm? Im gonna have to go with the longest running movie franchise to date, spanning 70 years & at its all time popularity, & box office success, as I type this - GOD EFFING ZILLA ! lmao You call yourself a movie buff / critic? HA! Your inner bias rears its all knowing head, yet again I see.
Relax Ronnie, everything will be fine 😅
LOL can't wait for James to read this comment
Good call on Godzilla but as far as my inner bias goes, I've admitted many times on this channel that I'm not an obsessive Godzilla fan. I love the 1954 original and Minus One, but only recently started watching the obscure classics. Here's a link to a livestream I did about the history of the franchise: th-cam.com/users/liveezo3YQ-fqRw?feature=share

@@UC4AQUgrQ9EwVIGoF0w7xHXg Comment has been read and while his tone left a bit to be a desired, Godzilla definitely deserved a shout out by me.
People want a TOM HARDY Mad Max film NOT WOKIOSA
The next Mad Max film is a prequel with main character Mad Max, set one year before Fury Road.
