  • Made during WWII by the British Ministry of Information, CAMERAMEN AT WAR was produced by the Realist Film Unit with support of various newsreel companies, the armed services film units and the Trustees of the Imperial War Museum. Compiled by Len Lye, This film tells the story of British newsreel and combat cameramen under battle conditions compiled by Len Lye. The film begins with rare footage from World War I of tanks in action, and includes a few scenes from the 1914-1918 war including famed American film director D W Griffith setting up a camera in the trenches. The film then begins covering various aspects of World War II combat. The film Includes footage of the campaign in France in 1940, the commando raid on Vaagso, Norway 27 December 1941, bombing raid on the Italian fleet, the shelling of Dover, Arctic convoy under attack, bombing raid on Essen, and operations in North Africa and the invasion of Sicily in July 1943. , tanks in action and the future Supreme Allied Commander in the Mediterranean Field Marshal, General Sir Harold Alexander. The cameramen featured are: Sidney Pollit of British Gaumont; Lesley Murray of Universal; Jim Gimmel; Ian Struthers; Douglas Hardy; Edward Candy; Frank Farnel of Universal; Jack Cotter Senior; Terry Ashwood of Pathe; Charles Martin; Sergeant Ackland; Sergeant Wilson; Jack Ramsden of Movietone; Jim Wright; Fred Bayliss of Paramount; John Turner of British Gaumont; Ron Noble of Universal News; Aleck Terser; Peter Connor of Gaumont; Graham Thompson of Movietone; Eddie Edmunds. Cine cameras featured include Newman-Sinclair, Bell and Howell Eyemo, Debrie and others.

    Never really thought about who took the films and photos of war. I didn't realize that the photographers were specifically trained and equipped soldiers and airmen. Brave and steadfast

    I was fortunate enough to have met many of the cameramen mentioned throughout this video when working as a Newsreel Cameraman at British Movietonews in the late 1950's early 1960's
    None of the cameramen still alive today (2020) unfortunately, except memories of their newsreel they shot,Thank goodness for British Movietonews film library now run by AP and the Pathe News Library.
    The British University Film and Video Council BUFVC has listed many of the cameramen mentioned in this video and the material they shot dating back to the early 1900's up until 1976 when the last UK Newsreel Movietones closed

    My grandfather Peter Connor of Gaumont seen here. He also went to the Quebec Conference with Winston Churchill to film.

    At 6:00 minute mark "...over an Italian cove, pattern bombing for enemy submarines....."
    Now that is some very creative WWII propaganda!!
