The local police were refusing to investigate the murders and the Osage tribal police couldn't investigate any killings that happened off the reservation, so the FBI was sent in. This was the first big investigation for the Bureau.
@@agenttheater5 Yes, J Edgar had just been appointed Director of the FBI, after the previous director was forced out due to his connections with the Teapot Dome Scandal. Up until this point the FBI was primarily responsible for coordinating criminal investigations that crossed state lines. But J Edgar pointed out that they were a federal law enforcement agency and since most of the victims lived on federal land, they should be given the lead in the case.
@@Archerfish1977 almost strange, from what I've heard about J. Edgar I wouldn't have thought he'd care that much about Native Americans being killed. Still, if he'd just started out I'm guessing he needed a success story.
@@agenttheater5 J Edgar was very politically observant, so he knew that a large portion of the US population still believed in the theory of “The White Man’s Burden”, in which it was their responsibility to bring civilization to the other races, whether they wanted it or not. They viewed other races and cultures as being almost childlike and in need of protection and leadership. Most Americans had gone from seeing the Native Americans as brutal barbarians to now viewing them as misguided children who needed our help. J Edgar jumped on this as a way to grab favorable headlines and deflect attention away from the Teapot Dome Scandal, in which he very likely was involved.
I’m excited for this movie! I don’t read much, but I did read the book this is based on and MAN it was intense. Some truly horrible things happened during that time, and I’m glad the film looks like it’s going to shed light on those events. The performances and Scorsese’s direction look top-notch, I’m sure it will deliver. Jesse Plemons creeps me out too haha. Don’t worry, he’s not Todd in this!
the osage dancing in the oil, I think they might be showing them before colonization. natives always celebrated natural wonders like that as a sign from mother earth
3:44 I'm not sure if karma's the right word - from what I can tell at least 60 full-blood Osage Native Americans were killed from 1918-1931 because of the money that was theirs on account of the oil being found on their land, and in more recent years it's started looking like there were even more murders that had been covered up. Oh wait, you meant karma as in the Osage people getting the money they deserve, sorry, misunderstood what you meant! :)
Cant waitto see this movie. DiCaprio is my favourite actor. Also DeNiro and Scorsese and a Western. Can't wait.

Wasn't J. Edgar Hoover involved? Ironic since DiCaprio played him in a movie called 'J. Edgar' a few years ago.

I’m going to go watch this. I love westerns and it’s this directors first western movie.
So happy to see tatinoo cardinal in this movie! A Canadian native actress legend.
Thanks for being an inspiration
