The best part of Metal Gear 1 is during the escape/self-destruct sequence if you smoke cigarettes you get more time to escape. That has to be the most illogical thing in the whole series.
If you think about it, smoking can calm your nerves and relax you. It could, in a way, relax Snake to keep him from panicking and time seeming to slow down from his perspective.
I found a way to beat Metal Gear if you lose a star in the Dirty Duck boss. If you have maximum ammo for C4 and don't die or pick up any more C4, you will keep all 16 of your bombs. It's a sort of glitch, if you lose a star, it won't automatically cause you to lose health/ammo, unless you pick up more or you die and your ammo resets. The first time I played MG1 I ended up beating it with 2 stars. But I recommend playing it safe and saving before the fight.
despite metal gear for MSX coming out decades ago, kojima decided to write a reason for the weirdness in it and metal gear 2 into metal gear solid 5, thats dedication
It's weird how much his way of speaking has changed over the years. He's way deeper and slower now. This review is done like he's got somewhere to be in 20 minutes. The way he talks is also different. It's hard to explain but he just talks differently now, at least on camera.

Been a Metal Gear fan since 1987 and I absolutely loved this review. Just one note - back in 1987, the MSX2 wasn't particularly "outdated"; it's just that, being a 'home computer', gaming wasn't its primary focus. For the time, the graphical capacities were quite dandy, if we'd excuse the lack of hardware supported vertical scrolling (which is something you would want in a computer that's dedicated to gaming).

Snake's revenge was actually the first metal gear I played. I recognize that it's not considered a true metal gear and I get it. I mean I was like 10 when I played it so despite not having played it in a long time I feel certain that stealth was not the biggest concern in Snake's Revenge. But on the same coin I was 10 and actually had the patience (and game genie codes) to get all the way to the final boss. 10 year old kids aren't typically known for their patience and if the game was "no good" I doubt I'd have made it half way through. An aspect I wish you highlighted about the twist is how it contextualize everything he's said to Snake up to that point. Deliberately delaying advice or directly sending Snake in to traps. When you first enter the last set of rooms he tells you to go left where it's a room with nothing but a pit trap. How if you went to the gas room he only calls you and warns you when you're most likely already taking damage. It's a game actively trying to sabotage you with faux advice. Making your only reliable source of information the hostages you save along the way.
True story, in 9th grade history I was anwsering every question about the Cold War and Desert Storm. My teacher asked "how do you know all this stuff?" I answered "from Metal Gear Solid." He then said "I love that game."
For people getting into the series, play them in order of release, NOT CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER! If you can deal with aged gameplay, trying playing Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 first. If you don't want to play them, watch a playthrough online, the games are only 2 hours long each. And worth it for understanding the story. Then play MGS1 if you can deal with aged gameplay. If you don't play it, you MUST watch a playthrough, everything else in the series builds off from here. You miss MGS1, you will have a hard time seeing references and what's going on. Then MGS2, hardest story to understand, but also very important. There are Wiki's out there and forums (Reddit has a great subreddit and community) that will answer any questions you have. Then MGS3. Many people's favorite in the franchise. Aged pretty well if you play the Subsistence version, which is the version included in the HD Collection. Then MGS4. I loved the game. Have very very long cutscenes, but they are very well done. Just get the popcorn ready. Then MGS Peace Walker. If you plan on playing MGS 5, this is a very important game as it takes place just before MGS5. It's quite different than the rest of the series as you build Mother Base and recruit soilders. Then Metal Gear Rising: Revengence. The most different in the franchise, not a stealth game but a very good action game. And if all those games are not enough for you. Metal Gear Portable Ops is canon. It is the weakest in the series of games that are canon. But MG fans should at least try and play or watch it. The controls aren't the best, but it's not a terrible game, just not great. It takes place in between MGS3 and Peace Walker. If you do play it, I recommend anytime after MGS3, preferably just before Peace Walker as it does have a couple minor references. You don't have to play it, but at a least read a Wiki that describes the story of the game before MGS5.
MSX was no Japanese gameconsole like the Xbox, it was a Japanese Home Computer, like the C64 and later the Atari ST and Amiga. A MSX2 was by far superior to a C64, but at the same time also by far inferior to an Amiga 500. The cool thing was it wasn't a specific brand, but a standard, with machines and accessories from Sony, Philips, Panasonic, SpectraVideo and Toshiba, kinda like PCs nowadays.
I do believe the difficulty getting easier as the game goes along gets immediately addressed by difficulty settings such as "HARD". IN this case u have 2/2 Rations Max capacity and also "EXTREME" where in spite of ur health BAR increasing, the damage you took during any boss fight is not restored to you. Also, you only have 1/1 Ration throughout the entire experience of the game. Secondly, I've tried the cardboard box trick and it doesn't work all the time especially on the higher difficulties. Not to mention the LACK of RADAR on both HARD and EXTREME difficulties.
Outdated hardware? It came out more than 3 years before the Super Famicom (SNES), 15 months prior to the Mega Drive (Genesis), 3 months before the PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16). The hardware was not outdated.
If they ever remake MG or MG2 I hope Snake is so green and pulling off cqc or other techniques allows you to fail or have them turn it around on you like The Boss can.
ProTip NO SPOILERS after the final boss, clear the 6 secret main ops missions that will instantly appear some time after beating the game(dont worry about trying to unlock them) , then go to extra ops 01 and look around, trust me
The main ones are the only ones that should be played, Metal Gear 1-2 ,and Peace Walker. Those cell games and pretty much anything that Hideo didn't help make isn't worth it.
12:08 They really didn't know any better at the time. Not that it couldn't be forseen, but the decision tree checking for unwinnable states was just not...a primary priority I guess you could say. There were lots of games around that era that were like that...ask any kid from that time about playing point and click adventure games (ESPECIALLY SIERRA GAMES) about missing some knicknack from a table somewhere in the first five minutes in and then it becoming important a number of hours later towards the end game. Yes, I'm still bitter about my childhood playing sierra games on my first computer...
I just realised I've only commented bitchy things in the last 3 videos of yours I've watched, sooo I should also mention that they're very entertaining, informative and I appreciate the work you must be putting in.
So… story clogged up the discs, eh? I have nothing against massive stories, but i wonder, if we returned to the brevity of games like this, what could we do with gameplay? What if the means were the motive? The set up, and tools presented were the vehicle for a player to fill in his or her own narrative. I'm not necessarily saying 'no' to stories or objectives, but what if they were trimmed to the leanest possible schematic. Let it be a character driven experience. The player creates an avatar and dives in to a world that enables them to act out the fantasy of the game. Destiny is a good example of what i'm talking about. Now i think about it. Games like Destiny and Borderlands that find that golden balance between narrative and gameplay, where gameplay
IMHO, if the original Metal Gear was left untouched by ULTRA other than a good English translation for the NES, this game might have been one of the best and memorable NES game for its stealth gameplay mechanics.
Maybe someone already said this but: 1.The game story and dialogues it was totally straight ahead because there was no enough memory back then (And this explains the next point) 2.They couldn't record the dialogues. So you had to read it. Can you imagine read a dialogue of the latest MGS? It will be tedious. 3.The game was a complete different experience and they couldn't put intricate histories, As if everyone knew the characters, So they had to make a typical '80 action movie story like Rambo, Because the real thing was the gameplay AND THAT'S MY OPINION
I hate when people talk about Metal Gear series, they seem to forget this and MG2: Solid Snake, and it is really fucking sad and stupid. MG2: Solid Snake could almost be as good, maybe even better than MGS1, yet ignorant fans say it is the best game of the series and original (even though it copied MG2). This and MG2 are probably my favorite 8bit games.
Fans usually say MGS4 is the best game ever as far as I've seen.. Their least favourite is usually MGS2.. I do like Metal Gear 1 and 2, though. I never played through them, but I love watching my friend play through them. I played through the MGS series, but I don't hate or exclude Metal Gear. That's why I always refer to the franchise itself as Metal Gear, unless I'm specifically talking about MGS.
In terms of gameplay MG1 is probably the most purely entertaining in the series. Sure, there is no story. THE GAME WAS MADE IN 1987! WTF do you expect?! Back in those days it was more about PLAYING the games instead of watching them (MGS4). All the story you needed was in the manual. It seems like Kojima is ashamed of the first two games and keeps making retcons to cover up his perceived mistakes. Notice after MGS1 the events of MG1 and 2 are never mentioned, despite them being defining moments in Snake's character arc. He even retconned the event of Big Boss' death. In MGS1 Snake said Big Boss revealed to him that he was his father in his dying moments in MG2 but in the actual game, Big Boss simply swore revenge before dying. There was no "I am your father" moment. These days, Kojima seems obsessed with fleshing out Big Boss' past instead of giving fans what they really wanted, more adventures with Solid Snake! From the very beginning, Big Boss was hailed as a legendary war hero but the circumstances about how he established this reputation was unclear. This actually was for the best as it made Big Boss seem like a larger than life figure and a perfect adversary for the young Solid Snake. But in Snake Eater they fubbed it. They portrayed Big Boss as vulnerable and at the end he even sheds tears. This weakened his character. I wish Kojima would stop all this Big Boss shit. If it continues, the first two games will be retconned out of existence.
im talking about now, people who didnt grow up with them will generally find them boring compared to the games of today, i mean they lack immersive graphics, music, proper faces, there's only so much emotion you can convey through 8 bit games
and also 'Back in those days it was more about PLAYING the games instead of watching them' wtf dude you're turning into one of those old people that go on about how their generation is better than the one after, do you want to become that?
Venom snake gets killed in this gsme, hes big boss' "phantom" (double) .. its quite sad because he sacrifices himself so that the real big boss can build outer heavn in zanzibar.. It all makes sense at the end of mgs5, i think if you knew that then your review would have been better.
***** He didnt actually. Venom Snake stepped in out of loyalty and Big Boss believed that he can beat Solid Snake. Remember how Big Boss tried to feed Solid Snake false informations and end him up in a trap?
+collingwood117 holy fucking spoilers. seriously dude, edit the comment and put a bunch of spaces before you start typing. start the comment with "SPOILERS SPOILERS"
dude, i have both, i have metal gear 1 and 2 (the proper sequel not tha cash in version that hideo had *nothing* to do with) for the MSX on an MSX emulator on my laptop, and i also have a P2 emulator on my laptop so i can play thhem both thru MGS subsistence (just i cant find it for my actual console) and i love both versions, the msx cuz of the funny bad translation, and the ps2 for the awesome retranslation that makes sense. and the gameplay rocks, remeber gameplay kids? no? shame that.
In case you haven't gone around to them. If you want to play MGS1, it's better if you emulate Twin Snakes on the GameCube. MGS2 is playable on PC, you absolutely need a controller. And some lights/shadows/reflections are busted on PC. Not that you would know if you didn't play the PS2/Xbox versions side by side. You can as well emulate the PS2 port of MGS2 for the genuine experience.
I have to admit playing this game on the legacy collection totally turned me off from playing metal gear 2 solid snake, cuz I thought it will be the same old shit with running around finding key cards n being lost in the maps. But seeing how people love the sequel way more, I'm giving it a shot.

You don't have to play it, but at a least read a Wiki that describes the story of the game before MGS5.
this video was just great. what an enjoyable 16 minutes. thank you!
+F Shah your frustration and commentary are funny.
+F Shah fuuuuuuuuck lol
Konami needs to remake MG and MG2 into one whole game. Bring the series full circle!
also I like the gameplay mechanics that MGS2 implemented and were ported over to the twin snakes edition of the game.
I love your comparison to Star Wars. For YEARS I have been saying that Kojima is the George Lucas of gaming.
ProTip NO SPOILERS
after the final boss, clear the 6 secret main ops missions that will instantly appear some time after beating the game(dont worry about trying to unlock them) , then go to extra ops 01 and look around, trust me
The Metal Gear series is one of my favorite, and this is looking like it's going to be a fun and interesting series. :)
The main ones are the only ones that should be played, Metal Gear 1-2 ,and Peace Walker. Those cell games and pretty much anything that Hideo didn't help make isn't worth it.
***** I heard, and sadly never played them.
Gotta love the intro
I need to know where that clip of "where do I go, where do I do?" Came from, I just need to watch the original
The wasteland video.
The auto closed captioning for this is surprisingly good.
Games like Destiny and Borderlands that find that golden balance between narrative and gameplay, where gameplay
stingers in sting position 10:35
IMHO, if the original Metal Gear was left untouched by ULTRA other than a good English translation for the NES, this game might have been one of the best and memorable NES game for its stealth gameplay mechanics.
Castle Wolfestien gave you the option to either use stealth or shoot down your enemies. Metal Gear was the 1st game where stealth was mandatory.
Maybe someone already said this but:
1.The game story and dialogues it was totally straight ahead because there was no enough memory back then (And this explains the next point)
2.They couldn't record the dialogues. So you had to read it. Can you imagine read a dialogue of the latest MGS? It will be tedious.
3.The game was a complete different experience and they couldn't put intricate histories, As if everyone knew the characters, So they had to make a typical '80 action movie story like Rambo, Because the real thing was the gameplay
AND THAT'S MY OPINION
the enemies have different colors in the msx version ?? after all this time I am still getting surprised by IT !!
they started naming them "solid" when they went 3d my friend
"Then something like this will happen..." I get an ad
I totally think that the Blast Suit is the Battle Dress from MGS Peace Walker and MGSV The Phantom Pain.
14: 38 PHANTOM PAINLESSLY there I'm good.
I can’t believe it has been 9 years
I hate when people talk about Metal Gear series, they seem to forget this and MG2: Solid Snake, and it is really fucking sad and stupid. MG2: Solid Snake could almost be as good, maybe even better than MGS1, yet ignorant fans say it is the best game of the series and original (even though it copied MG2). This and MG2 are probably my favorite 8bit games.
Gameplay wise they suck
If it continues, the first two games will be retconned out of existence.
im talking about now, people who didnt grow up with them will generally find them boring compared to the games of today, i mean they lack immersive graphics, music, proper faces, there's only so much emotion you can convey through 8 bit games
and also 'Back in those days it was more about PLAYING the games instead of watching them'
wtf dude you're turning into one of those old people that go on about how their generation is better than the one after, do you want to become that?
yeah I may want to buy the twin snakes because of the things that I was used to in MGS2.
SPOILERS
After 20 plus years, we finally learn that the "Big Boss" Solid Snake fought in outer heaven is a doppelgänger.
MGS4 iirc
+Joe Sedgh I don't want to make you sad...
But he learned that from MGSV
Joe Sedgh Ahhh, K.
I just beat chapter 1.
Is the second any good?
+NikodemVanKenobi No. It's garbage. Then you do it again a couple times to make 100 hours and that apparently triggers the real ending. It sucks.
John Peterson I already beat the game...
I got the real ending after 60 hrs of gameplay, right after 43.
Right now i'm going for the disarnament
Lol I have the NES version in my house in a shelf next to the NES version of metal gear 2
Glad I played the game on the MSX when I was young (I had the cart).... much later I played MG2 (on the PC with one of the first MSX emulators)
and are yoy ready to play the remake?
what remake?
The remake, that i'm making, "Outer Heaven".
+CynicalReviews Of course :)
@@Bokerjkm are you still making it
Your first run is the exact same as mine, accidentally killed a hostage and thus didn't have the ammo to killed Metal Gear.
Me too, I wrote it off as 'played' and moved on to MG2
Venom snake gets killed in this gsme, hes big boss' "phantom" (double) .. its quite sad because he sacrifices himself so that the real big boss can build outer heavn in zanzibar.. It all makes sense at the end of mgs5, i think if you knew that then your review would have been better.
+collingwood117 Well he made this video in 2012 so...
+collingwood117 I dont think he actually sacrificed. It is more like they were working together to create outer heaven in South Africa.
***** He didnt actually. Venom Snake stepped in out of loyalty and Big Boss believed that he can beat Solid Snake. Remember how Big Boss tried to feed Solid Snake false informations and end him up in a trap?
+collingwood117 holy fucking spoilers. seriously dude, edit the comment and put a bunch of spaces before you start typing. start the comment with "SPOILERS SPOILERS"
were you inspired by RLM? great videos btw...
Just a Reminder that Shotmaker was once Shoot Gunner
do you plan on doing a critical close-up of metal gear solid 4 and peace walker
dude, i have both, i have metal gear 1 and 2 (the proper sequel not tha cash in version that hideo had *nothing* to do with) for the MSX on an MSX emulator on my laptop, and i also have a P2 emulator on my laptop so i can play thhem both thru MGS subsistence (just i cant find it for my actual console) and i love both versions, the msx cuz of the funny bad translation, and the ps2 for the awesome retranslation that makes sense. and the gameplay rocks, remeber gameplay kids? no? shame that.
wait what? MGS 1 and 2 are on PC?!
FUCK! i need it!
They even have the Battle Armor from Metal Gear Solid 1.
I have to admit playing this game on the legacy collection totally turned me off from playing metal gear 2 solid snake, cuz I thought it will be the same old shit with running around finding key cards n being lost in the maps. But seeing how people love the sequel way more, I'm giving it a shot.
7:56 Vermon Kinda sounds like *venom*
I really like your guy's videos. Really entertaining stuff. You should really review Syphon Filter, that would be interesting =)
