Re-pot 9 month old Copiapoa lembckei cactus seedlings with me | It's too hot to do anything outside!

- It's officially oven season in Phoenix, AZ. All I see are 110F+ high temperatures in the foreseeable future as we wait for the monsoon storms to come in and cool the sizzle. It means it's too hot to do anything outside for extended periods of time due to safety concerns for both me and my camera. So let's hangout indoors together and re-pot some of those 9 month old Copiapoa seedlings that I keep complaining about being overcrowded.
Thank you @MariaSweets5 for the video suggestion!

Omg!! That’s me! Thank you so much for doing the seedling repotting video! I’m excited to see this 😁
Yay!!
Hi maria !
Thank you so much for the video suggestion, Maria! I finally finished re-potting all the 9 month old Lembckei's.... now the 7 month olds are screaming to be re-potted. It never ends!
@@cookiescacti lol good to hear you finished repotting those!
I am SO HAPPY to see a creator growing in perlite and potting mix. It’s such a refreshing thing to see within a community that heavily focuses on exotic media/gritty mix.
I grow mine in Pro-Mix HP and believe that good cultivation habits are more important than exotic growing media.
I don’t miss oven season. Former Ahwatukee guy here. Bless you 😅
Ahh you know the heat! This summer is pretty bad, but oh well! What part of the country/world are you at now?
I'm really glad that you appreciate the "easy" soil mix. I'm too lazy (and cost conscious) to do the fancy soils. Plus, with the number of seedlings I have to re-pot that would cost a fortune just in soil mixes! I am very curious about the difference between the two though. Maybe someday I'll buy a small amount of the fancy mixes and do an experiment to compare against what we can find at local stores/nurseries. That would be so interesting.
I've heard a lot of good things about Pro-Mix, many growers I know use it. Maybe I should try it myself too! For my adult plants I just use pumice and any cactus soil I can find.
My goodness-I can't even imagine those temperatures. I have lived my whole life where the temperatures reach -30/-40 in the winter and would much rather have that than +110 😮
This morning around 7 am it was 52 degrees-wonderful for walking. The cacti look so much more comfortable in their new pots. You and Cookie keep cool and hydrated 🌬💧
OMG I can't imagine -30/-40 temperatures! What part of the country/world are you at? It's 115F right now as I type... sigh... it will be 92F at 7am tomorrow... so ridiculous LOL.
Great to see how you do your repotting.
Thanks for sharing.
Good to see Cookie again ❤️
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video... and Cookie *meow*!
Love your videos.
I'm so glad you enjoy these videos! That really helps encourage me to keep posting.
Great idea and great video…really informative…thanks!
I'm so glad you liked this video, Patti! I hope these seedlings survive the transplant... we'll see...
First time iam seen your video, so helpful information thanks, take care ❤👍🖐
I'm so glad you found this video helpful! Let's hope I can keep these little guys alive.
@@cookiescacti thanks for replying 💝 👋 ⚘️
Very informative video. I like it.💚👍👍
In Germany we have 100.4 fahrenheit🥵🌞👍
Wow, that's hot! What humidity do you get? It's now 116F here, very low humidity. It feels like an oven broiler outside!
@@cookiescacti 87 prozent last week. it's terrible you have to drink so much🍺🤣.Not beer🤨water😉😎
Thanks for the great information ℹ am new at this have never grew any catus from seeds would love to try it
Give it a try! It doesn't take too much to get started and the rewards can be very great. Happy growing!
Thank you for the video Jenny, I really enjoy seeing other growers' techniques regarding all aspects of cacti growing. As for "to trim or not to trim roots" dilemma, I tried both over the years and I can tell you there's no consistent differences in growth afterwards. I generally avoid root trimming in very slow growing species, as they take more time to regrow fine rootlets but for the rest of the species it might be good practice to wash and trim roots as it'll give one the opportunity to examine roots for parasites.
Best regards,
Nino
what kind of root parasites do you find?
@@derris3989 Luckily I haven't had such case, but root mealybugs ( family Pseudococcidae) infestations are quite common in collections.
This is very interesting, Nino. Thank you for sharing. The only way to tell if one method is truly better than another for ourselves is to try it, especially given that everyone's climates and growing conditions are different so it really depends, etc. Do you consider Copiapoa fast, slow, or medium growers?
@@cookiescacti Growth rate of Copiapoas vary greatly within the genus, as you can see yourself. I have little first-hand experience, except with C. cinerea (which is fairly slow growing species) and C. lauii (which is even slower). Some of your seedlings, on the other hand, (e.g. C. lembckei, C. coquimbana, etc.) appear to be growing like bamboo.
Awesome, thanks for posting this Jenny! I was always wondering what you did in terms of soil for repotting if your cactus mix differs a lot from your seed starter mix (although my oldest guys are 3 months old so I'm a good way off from having to worry about that). Always makes me happy to see an update video about your plants.
Good advice about re-using seed starting mix too!
I still have no idea what I'm doing LOL. I keep wondering if they need to be transplanted into an "adult" soil mix at some point, aka cactus soil+pumice. I guess the only way to find out is to try transplanting some into the adult mix and see if they grow differently from the ones in the baby mix. So much more to learn...
love your seedling videos!!! hello cookie baby!!! 😽😽😽
"Meeooowwww" says Cooke. I'm so glad you enjoy these cactus-baby videos!
The outside temperature is too crazy! super hot! I'm curious if the copiapoa you planted indoors are still growing at these temperatures? Now the indoor temperature in Taiwan is about 86 degrees Fahrenheit, I think my copiapoa growth is stagnant. Will you turn on the air conditioner all day for them? Thanks Jenny for the video! I feel so relieved every time I watch it.
It is so hot! And the heat hasn't taken a break yet, we're making a new record with the number of consecutive days over 110F, it's terrible! The Copiapoa are all growing indoors where they get to enjoy air conditioning so they're doing fine. I did put a dozen seedlings outside in my shade house to see how they take the heat. So far so good. They're still alive but their color is definitely more yellow than the indoor seedlings. I'm so glad you enjoy these videos! Which species are you growing? I do find some of my older seedlings slowing down in growing, I wonder if there's something wrong if it's normal, only one way to find out!
It'd be interesting to try and select for a for a fast-growing cultivar of this species after a few generations of breeding.
That is a really interesting thought, definitely something I'll patiently wait for and try. It's so interesting seeing how some of the seedlings just grow so much faster than all the others.
lembecki🔥🔥🔥🌵
Lembecki!! My faves...
Hey Jenny, as usual, I like your video, so practical and your cat is adorable. I probably missed it but did you post a link to Amazon for the purple dibbler? Thanks.
Never mind, I found it, thanks anyway!
Ahh - so sorry it took me so long to get back to you! I have a link in the video description - it's one of the Amazon links, but sounds like you found it.
Yay!!!!
Woohoo!
When they have a tiny one stuck to the side I just keep them together
I debate on whether to separate them or not. Sometimes I have some seedlings that just won't come apart - those I'll keep together.
I would avoid giving out your birthday on the internet!
What a shameful world we live in, but I don't mind. I wish everyone well. I wouldn't think twice or you'll be constantly worrying living in a shell.
It's all good - it's kind of too late since I think the info showed up in a previous video too.
Nice clump of Copiapoa, they have grown to a good size. So nice to see your Cookie happy and meowing for everyone. My Cookie, the dog kind is on the start of my last video with some of my odd cacti th-cam.com/video/dW-5j_291bM/w-d-xo.html
