Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher shares his thoughts on whether using a "RefCam" is a good idea for football after the news that Jarred Gillett will be wearing a "RefCam" for tonight’s match between Crystal Palace and Manchester United as part of filming for a one-off programme promoting Match Officials.

We need RefMic not a Refcam like the XFL in real time so we know what discussion are the ref talking to the VAR.
How will anyone benefit from this? Who will benefit from this? It's like people at home flick between NBA NFL EPL and start complaining that EPL is the odd one out
@@TmcksnT It benefits the players, the coaches and everyone that is literally watching it because now instead of speculating that the ref are talking about what their betting odds were, we can actually hear what the VAR is talking regarding the call and how it conveys to the on-field. Instead of waiting a week or two after someone yell it out in public like Forest, Klopp or Arteta and may not get the video anyway on the Mic'd Up show with Howard, we can cut all that and just listen in on the audio in real time live.
@@Apocalypse21OG I dont want to go to my local league or any league and be hearing VAR, Ref mic with players arguing with him. I want to watch football. All this other stuff is so annoying. And it has unintentional consequences when the rules are changed this often
@@TmcksnT So you want people to complain after like Forest did and wait until they release the video on Mic'd up with them saying yeah its a penalty but it has been a week so what to do. Remember the Luiz diaz goal against spurs audio where they release after Liverpool and Klopp call for what were talking about and it shows that they made a huge error, if that audio was live, the players, the coach, the fans and the commentators would have heard that the var say it was onside, and we won't have the discussion every match, what did the ref and VAR say like we now have for every matchday week now.
@@Apocalypse21OG So if you know an error was made live what will be the outcome?Who is going to give the referee or VAR a red card in the match. The people in the stands?
We don’t want to see them call bullsh*t from a different angle. How about you give us audio instead. Let’s hear what they’re usually chatting about for ages & still screw up.
Why do you want to torture us with more incompetent decision making? We actually need a live VAR cam to hear what those clowns are saying.
That's for the people sitting on the toilet watching the match on the phone. What about the people that actually go and watch the matches. Whose needs are more important?
@@TmcksnT NFL have done it, they make the refs MIC audible for the audience to hear. Even reviews in Cricket are the same with the 3rd umpire analysing every point to come to a conclusion. Only match fixing incompetent VAR jokers in EPL are on mute.
@@maximumpotential3796 But those refs don't explain a decision to the crowd, they just call the decision. And in those sports players don't argue with the referee. I dont go to matches to hear arguments between Bruno Fernandez and ref. I go to see football. Who cares if twice in the season the ref gets a decision wrong for a team. It's not worth all this energy to try and fix it which risks creating more issues or changing the game unintentionally
@@TmcksnT it's not about explaining it to the crowd, it's about making it transparent. The process in which they come to a conclusion is made visible and audible, this goes a long way in strengthening their accountability. What's happening now is nothing, they are protected by pgmol who are basically like a cartel.
@@maximumpotential3796 1. The FA rules are available for all to read. Sometimes these TV pundits clearly havent read them. They make it seem like the rules are sooo ambiguous. 2. So they shouldnt explain or should explain to the crowd to show the process of how they go to the decision?
Only way this would have any benefit is if it showed VAR what the ref saw so it could determine if it can/should get the ref to view the monitor on an incident. Other then that only thing it will do is get fans/players/managers etc more annoyed at the decision being made by refs or not being made. And incidents VAR doesn’t get involved when it should.
Just get better referees and get rid of VAR.
Just get better refs. And then VAR can stay and operate how it’s intended to.
The issue is not what they say on the field, it’s what’s happening OFF the field and between games.
I think very often these conversations miss the point of the main issues . First they need to address what var can intervene. Var should be there to assist the ref with all areas of the pitch used as a tool not just certain aspects. The next thing needs to be the operators of var they should just be a designated var team not refs one week and var the next. Wordings of the rules also need to be looked at as clear an obvious is turning out to be subjective so things like offside being simplified it if a goal scoring body part is level it’s onside . But last the standard of officiating needs to be address and to give the ref a little bit of grace mic’d them up and giving them the chance to explain like in rugby would certainly give them more of a chance to at least explain a decision in the right moments.
We have hundreds of cameras around the stadium and stil making wrong decisions.. How wil this improve the situation
Something I need to point out. That name Jarred gave a faint bell in my memory, and then I found the video of him being mic'd up, along with the assistant refs and the VAR refs for his last A League game before he went to the prem.
So this guy clearly is guinea pigging these ideas.
Ok! Now what’s VARs excuse?
We haven’t needed a ref cam in well over 100 years of football before, not sure why we need it now
Because if we stayed as we were 100 years ago we wouldn't evolve
@sm7289 No that's not the answer lol
@@sm7289 that isn’t answering the question
Silly statement. For thousands of years humans didnt need cars because they had horses
@Bert-lw1ot Bert doesn't have a clue what day it is never mind anything about football
Who’s making these ridiculous decisions like seriously we need a mic on a ref to explain his decision making not a stupid video that can be doctored using ai
I think a VAR Cam would make more sense? Seeing how they are favouring certain teams
This is just getting silly. referees dont need more gadgets they need to be properly taught how to referee fairly and consistently. They need to stop trying to be something they are clearly not, celebrities, and concentrate on getting basic things right
Hope they wear the body cam on the head and not the body. So we can see where the ref is looking
Unless the technology being used tracks the eye movements of the referee then it’s completely pointless and proves nothing
Does it really matter anymore, honestly..?
The reality is, this sport is absolutely awful now and has been ruined by a corrupt cartel/mafia whatever you want to call them, just for financial gain. It's over. It's just a matter of time.
Dermot would need an "Egg cam"
Audio, not more video.
I think no matter what you do, people gonna complain that you help the others team and do not help his teams.
Refcam do not think gonna help what we need is open mic so all is more open, i do not know why is all so secretive on football when almos all other sport is more open
Live audio is what we want. Then the pgmol can't fudge it before we get to hear it
Dermot Gallagher just sticks up for his mates, not tell the truth about what really happens
isn't this what VAR is for?? what the hell are you doing to football🤷🏻♂️ who made these people who are destroying our beloved game everday faster than the day before it in charge?!!!! 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
now players will really have to watch their tongues..
If only is used right now problem
Refmic, refcam and var needed as referees still make tons of mistakes and the thing this thing later in the year will do is probably add more dislike to the refs
What we really need is non-English refs in the prem. Something like 70% of them are from Manchester too, but still "unbiased"
We all know you made that %age on the spot with no facts to back it up. One fact is there are no Ref's from the Greater London area.
Just get rid of the corrupt referees, Howard Webb and Dermot Gallagher
We need to sack all this technology and get back to football. Human error is always a factor, and let's face it no amount of tech is going to affect the natural subliminal bias towards the big teams anyway so WTF just go back to basics and put up with it
What happens if the Ref has a camera on his back then the player's are fooked they can't give the Ref the finger lmao 🤣 😆
Singapore League is going to implement ref-cam for next season … due to amount of abused aimed at the refs…. 😒
Yes it is
they still will get things wrong
That's a very useless idea! Somebody is bound to make money from selling those useless gadgets to the EPL! Rather make audio audible from those sitting in the VAR booth! We want to hear what they are discussing for so long and STILL make the wrong conclusions...on real time!
One day a referee will sweat too much and explode😂
I heard the refs don't want the ref cams. Because everyone will see a lot off money changing hands .😂💰💰💰🤑🤑🤑💳💷💵💶💵💷💳
What a waste of time. God I'm going off football game by game
Just leave football alone.
Is a "RefCam" a good idea for football? no it won't,,,,proper training for the worse referee's we have ever had in the premier league
This is crazy. Why do we need to Americanize football? It's like football rules are governed by people watching TV not people in the stands
What WE NEED is... Clear Rules and Properly trained referees. Oh and Accountability for poor decisions. LOL Look there goes a flying Pig
Just get rid of lot . Is this gonner improve the quality of referee definetly not . Its got worse since var like a lot of other things that technology has made worse . Who really wants to watch yhrough the eyes of a referee .
Ref cam you release your footage on what platform? You want millions of views for a ref cam to make more money. I dont want my contribution to Prem to go to development of refs. Hire better refs. Create competition within that area.
