Many years ago I heard him play at Leeds Town Hall (UK). How I wish I'd asked him to sign my programme! He was a great chap and greeted everyone who had the opportunity of speaking with him as though they were people he'd known for years. As others have said it's such a pity he's no longer with us but at least we can still listen to his playing thanks to TH-cam.

The guy pulling the stops is doing a great job. He must know the organ extremely well.

He sent me a text once it said “ New York New York” haha. That was a few days after we set up the original Allen computer organ on the stage at the Regal Edmonton, only 422 speakers and 6000 punch cards, 5000 watts of sound, it was the largest electronic organ in the world at the time, what a beast, Carlo played it for about 15 minutes and then declared the theatre had too much natural sound. It was left on the the stage for months before being taken away. What an amazing talent he had.

This is a truly amazing video. The sound of this organ is earth shattering. If you can't bring out the full resources then stay on the porch. Well done good and faithful servant!

A far too fussy a performance from the 'registrant' who must have played almost as many stops as Carlo did keys. His job was to be as unobtrusive as possible. This guy didn't realise that.

@@richardturpin8981 maybe Carlo told him what do . I'm a trained organist myself and I give very detailed instructions to my registrants when I have them

"Oh hear us when we cry to thee,
for those in peril on the sea."
Beautiful hymn played at many a seafaring funeral.
Carlo Curley plays a superb rendition of this to the tune"Melita".

Dear God, does anyone play like this anymore? With the death of Carlo, my old friend, it seems the present day concert artisits just play technically wonderfully, but no one plays with their soul. With all the great spiritual organists gone, or at least the ones I had the pleasure of knowing, I'm alone..and fill so alone. I guess I can comfort myself with their recordings and loving memories. Thank you God for the privilage on knowing them, especially Carlo. Amen.

Carlo was one of Virgil Fox's students and so was Doug Marshall of Marshall and Ogletree organs. They have a youtube channel here called organpower.

Thom Lewis You obviously didn’t hear many artists if you think Carlo the charlatin was the only one that “played with a soul.”

It's delightful to see Carlo playing in his home country. I was fortunate to see him play with Dr. Thalben Ball in Alexander Palace, North London, England. I was amazed at both his talent and the 5 kilowatts of power delivered through a carefully arranged set of 350 speakers. The Great Hall at Alexander Palace was cathedral-like in dimensions and reputed to have a 7 second reverberation time. Wonderful memories of a characterful man with huge talent. RIM Carlo (M for Music, I sure you guessed ;) )

+clydesight It was originally built by Aeolian. They were noted for building organs for the grand houses of the rich and famous. Few were built for churches - that was Skinner's domain. In the middle of the depression both companies were saved by merging and an infusion of $$. G. Donald Harrison was brought in to work with Skinner, changed the tonal architecture of the A-S organs ans lost the richness of the Skinners while adding the clarity of the Diapasons, mutations and Mixtures as a complete and cohesive chorus. Then he went baroque and A-s went broke.

i met him only once with my grandfather here in scotland when he was on tour, a lovely generous man who invited my grandfather to take me along to see him rehearse in one of our local cathedrals before seeing his show in the evening, a wonderful kind man who will be missed and same goes for my grandfather too RIP

I still find it hard to believe that Carlo departed us this year. Funny thing about his passing is within 2-3 days of 8/11, I discovered a long-lost Allen Organ cassette tape he made in the 80's. It turned up out of nowhere. I thought it had been lost long ago.
Well, as VF would say on hearing of someone's passing "Have a wonderful trip!"

Annoying? How exactly? Your ignorance is actually more annoying. Have you never heard of a console assistant, sometimes called a registrant? You need to get out more if no, and maybe you should refrain from being so opinionated until you acquire a bit more nous.

    • @anb740
      @anb740 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

With an organ of this size, a registrant is definitely helpful! Peter Conte and others employ their help all the time on the Wanamaker. Otherwise, the organist would spend hours trying to register all the pistons needed for the multitude of changes.
