There was no dearth of Bengalis who hated Rabindranath in the society of that time and tried to make him inferior in the eyes of the people. Tagore was humiliated and oppressed in several times by them.
At the reception in Amrakunj (Shantiniketan, Bolpur), the poet came in a dhoti Punjabi of Gardar, he was garlanded by President Jagdish Chandra Bose. The poet sat on the clay altar, on the lotus leaf. Hirendranath Dutta read the congratulatory letter drafted by the poet Satyendra Dutta on a silk cloth. Jagdishchandra gave a shy vine tree. After everyone's congratulations, it's the poet's turn.
He said ‘‘...আজ আপনারা আদর করে সম্মানের যে সুরাপাত্র আমার সম্মুখে ধরেছেন তা আমি ওষ্ঠের কাছে পর্যন্ত ঠেকাব, কিন্তু এ মদিরা আমি অন্তরে গ্রহণ করতে পারব না। এর মত্ততা থেকে আমার চিত্তকে আমি দূরে রাখতে চাই।’’(Today I will hold the cup of honor that you have lovingly held in front of me, but I will not be able to accept this wine in my heart. I want to keep my mind away from its intoxication)
