OpenBVE NYC Subway Special: R42 55th Anniversary Run to Essex Street on the RR Line!

  • Reviving a long gone era of the NYC subway using OpenBVE, a simple train simulator game...
Today marks the 55th Anniversary of the R-42 rolling stock, which entered service on May 9, 1969!
Retired in early 2020, these subway cars greatly served New York City for many years along with the R-32 which retired two years later!
To pay tribute to these great workhorses, let's go back in time to their early years with a sweet little run!
When fully delivered in 1970, the R-42s had different rollsign pieces depending on the lines they were assigned to, due to their size.
Like the R-40 cars that were originally assigned to the Queens Blvd lines only (E, EE, F, GG & N), the R-42 side rollsigns featured different routings for most lines they were assigned to.
Some were quite unusual, like the B & D lines to Second Avenue, and the KK line to Metropolitan Avenue, Rockaway Parkway or Crescent Street...
The one that caught my eye was on the RR line rollsigns: 95 Street to Essex Street!
Although the RR did use to run officialy via Nassau Street to/from Chambers Street during rush hours (known then as the "Bankers Special"), I ignore why they would have had it to Essex Street and if it ever happened. Perhaps there were plans to add special runs to the Essex Street Market?
Whatever it would have been, I found this route interesting enough to recreate and make this special run on, especially since most of the last R-42 cars in service were part of the group that were assigned to the RR line (4808-4851)! Thus for symbolic purposes, I could partly recreate the retirement run set with cars 4826, 4827, 4830 and 4831 in the consist!
Route and train model built by me.
Route might be released in the future.

The route and train are excellent. Reminds me of when I was a young kid riding the train with my mother. Thanks!

As a kid I remember being with an old friend walking from Bowery to Canal and hearing him hit his head on an electrical box. Will never forget those days. That line in that area has alot of nice history to it to explore in person. That was over 15 years ago though.

Very good production. When the dynamic brake came on all retardation of speed was accompanied by a mild rumble. And the sound of the friction brake mechanism that comes in just before stopping would be good to hear also. Late coming passengers would often yell 'hodeedoe'. I think that went out with the 10 cent payphone call. Hoods were called ghettos back then.

I wish you can do the complete 2,3,4 and 5 train lines from the 1960s, 1970s and the early 1980s.

Great video of the RR train back in 1969, going to Essex Street. I always thought in the rush hours that they only went to Chambers Street.

They did. In fact after they stopped at Chambers street, they would lay up on the tracks that formerly went to the Manhattan Bridge.

Lol don't expect miracles from them, they be making enough money off of the R1-9 runs, the rest is dust for them.
Can't believe they didn't at least put a blue stripe on at least 2 cars in addition of the OG rollsign replicas... And nothing excuses them because they repainted TWO whole R33WF cars in the WF colors. Oh, and we're not even gonna talk about the R40M/R42 pair that's left to rot because it's been sitting in Coney Island Yard for more than a decade. SMH
