By far, one of the most interesting 🤗 talks that I've had the pleasure to hear in a long time. Easily top 5 material. And that is quite an accomplishment, considering that Nick's TED talk about the risk of AI from years ago is also part of that same top 5. I actually listened to this episode twice 😊. To the extent that a solved world involves having all the answers to all the questions, I don't believe that is possible. To the extent we can have a solved world so we don't have to be in a state of tension with finding our basic happiness needs, I believe that is just around the corner for humanity. It is a blessing that all the answers to all the questions will never happen. It will give us something to do for all of eternity.
Not only is it is possible, but it is highly likely with ASI being our benevolent Digital Guardian. Solved world means all resourcing is solved. Unlimited energy, unlimited food, only limitation is physical living spaces. But then some can live in orbiting space habitats and habitats on the Moon and Mars and Titan etc.
But our basic human needs as biological beings with constrained free-will and emotional complexity still exist and needs to be dealt with. The Utopia is unimaginable now but will be overall 1000X better than it will ever be for humanity. *Note: The meaning of life will still be the same as it ever was, just that most of our intentions are much much easier to achieve. That does not mean being handed to us!. We still have to work for them. To exist as a human in any physical location is to expend some effort doing it. This is what I meant by work.

The problem with life is not that it's harsh but that it is TOO harsh. The need to feel better about life is what matters, not the hope to feel a permanent utopia as real.
Is it true that life is too harsh? I like to think of it as having infinite adversities and dukkha but also infinite ways to find gratitude and awe.
1) If the Universe is going to end in heat death, then how can there possibly be Utopia one of the central features of is its lasting forever? 2) If the Universe is expanding at a rate faster than the speed of light then how can it possibly become completely sentient and conscious? 3) If human beings most care about and love other human beings why should a Digital Utopia be a paradise for us? 4) If so many of the steps on the way to Utopia are only possible and not really probable why should we take the whole process as so important? Doesn't the whole description of arriving to a fifth stage sound more like a game-move than a true analysis? 5) Both supremely intelligent partners in this conversation are extremely pleasurable and informative to listen to, but I am not sure they bring us here closer to truth.

Interesting enough, because Dirk Bogarde took a risk, when he got rolling again, the movies he made, roles he acted were more significant and gained more critical acclaim than those he'd done before. Thanks for such an entertaining and informative look at this movie. I had just seen it and it stayed with me.
I bought the e-book Deep Utopia, but currently it is only available in English. I think that before we worry about reaching utopia, we should at least know how to sell books translated into other languages, and perhaps make an audiobook version.

A future 'utopia' can't be realized when there's disagreement on the terms. Mandatory compliance transforms utopia into distopia.

I think recursive improvement is only coherent as a word game. A lot of his stuff seems to work like that.
You know the problem growing up in India. The dystopias looked materially better because we had a poverty problem. I agree with Nick that deep utopia may address some proper utopian thought on material possibilities without a political narrative ❤🎉

We must ask ourselves, "What will happen when AI has taken 85% of jobs present in 2020? What will we do? How will we eat and survive without incomes from jobs or other means?" What is disturbing is that while AI is taking these jobs, the gov't and the corporations have not done ANYTHING to prepare us for an AI'ed civilization. They have not said anything about major retraining of an entire economy to something else, and they have not followed up on a discussion of universal basic income. This is supposedly supported by a lack of information in the latest government budgets submitted and approved as reported by some TH-cam videos.
It appears that the US gov't and the corporations intend to kill off the majority of Americans passively, through starvation from lack of income to buy food. (check and see if farming production is declining or will start to decline ahead of the "starvation phase") (also check to see if the "makeup" of robot equipment allocation would change to reflect a trend away from retail and services for the masses, possibly indicating an extinction of the American public - this means taking a robot from Chipotle and repurposing it for some other job not related to the public, or scrapping affected robots to be remade for some other purpose that has nothing to do with the public) It appears that the decline of farming has already started with the state of Maine buying farm land under the pretext that there are "forever chemicals" present at around 20 parts per TRILLION (safe level is said to be only 4 parts per TRILLION), which does not make sense, BUT this would rope in a LOT of land across the US. Other states may follow suit in addition to the ten states that have similar laws in place.
This way, there are only enough people alive to get some things done, and the rest is done by AI, and the survivors who planned this can claim the whole country for themselves. Imagine having an estate mansion half the size of a mall on several dozen thousand acres of land, and robots would be used to maintain and clean the estates and do the farming FOR THE ESTATE OWNERS. The White Man's wet dream of civilization. What will the Native Americans south of the US border do when they see this coming, especially when they can buy firearms legally now? Hopi prophecy...
It feels like he took all his work for this book from late Jacque Fresco from the Venus project. Like all of this sounds exactly similar to his research.

Young philosophers take note... the way to make a name for yourself is to push a possible view to its conceivable extreme and assess its coherence, explanatory power, implications for surrounding ideas from there. Nick's simulation possibility & now solved world, Robert Nozick's Experience Machine, Hobbes' super selfishness, Mill's super altruism, Singer's super egalitarianism... I guess materialism's eliminative reduction & idealism's radical skepticism generally are examples, and the Great Chain of Being's plenum too.
what is the difference between good and bad in relation to artificial intelligence... because what is good for one user might not be in favor of another... what if two ai agents come to a conflict of interest 🤔

A.I gurus have been saying "it's happening!!" for 50 years. Now that BonziBuddy can search the internet & has been given a calculator function the gurus think the Matrix is underway. This is what they do.
I think the concept of bring value in after the problems are solved is fundamentally wrong. Value should be the most important criteria in how we are able to frame problems then ultimately solve them. Interesting though.

What is missing from the most advanced AI systems and programs is the presence of a self-aware *"I Am-ness"* with a *"personal interest"* in the task it is performing. I would even go so far as to suggest that the alleged ability to "understand" what it is doing (something of which certain people attribute to AI) is nothing more than the blind and mindless interactions taking place at the quantum (or "non-local") level of reality between superpositioned (entangled) fields of information. I'm talking about fields of information that seem to exist in a state of interpenetrating *"oneness"* like the information that underpins a laser hologram.
This, in turn, could explain why the results of AI's searches and processes seem to be *"instantaneous"* .
And if it wasn't for the fact that actual conscious entities (humans) are present to observe (make a measurement/collapse the wavefunction) of the AI and its findings, then whatever a non-conscious AI is (or produces) would forever exist as a field of superpositioned information.

Unfortunately, in most cases in which this term is used, particularly outside India, it tacitly or implicitly refers to ideas and ideologies that are quite far-removed from genuine wisdom. For instance, the typical academic philosopher, especially in the Western tradition, is not a lover of actual wisdom, but a believer in, or at least a practitioner of, adharma, which is the ANTITHESIS of genuine wisdom. Many Western academic (so-called) “philosophers” are notorious for using laborious sophistry, abstruse semantics, gobbledygook, and pseudo-intellectual word-play, in an attempt to justify their blatantly-immoral ideologies and practices, and in many cases, fooling the ignorant layman into accepting the most horrendous crimes as not only normal and natural, but holy and righteous!
An ideal philosopher, on the other hand, is one who is sufficiently intelligent to understand that morality is, of necessity, based on the law of non-violence (“ahiṃsā”, in Sanskrit), and sufficiently wise to live his or her life in such a harmless manner. Cf. “dharma”.
One of the greatest misconceptions of modern times is the belief that philosophers (and psychologists, especially) are, effectively, the substitutes for the priesthood of old. It is perhaps understandable that this misconception has taken place, because the typical priest/monk/rabbi/mullah seems to be an uneducated buffoon compared with those highly-educated gentlemen who have attained doctorates in philosophy, psychology and psychiatry. However, as mentioned in more than a few places in this book, it is imperative to understand that only an infinitesimal percentage of all those who claim to be spiritual teachers are ACTUAL “brāhmaṇa” (as defined in Chapter 20). Therefore, the wisest philosophers of the present age are still those exceptionally rare members of the Holy Priesthood!
At the very moment these words of mine are being typed on my laptop computer, there are probably hundreds of essay papers, as well as books and articles, being composed by professional philosophers and theologians, both within and without academia. None of these papers, and almost none of the papers written in the past, will have any noticeable impact on human society, at least not in the realm of morals and ethics, which is obviously the most vital component of civilization. And, as mentioned in a previous paragraph, since such “lovers-of-wisdom” are almost exclusively adharmic (irreligious and corrupt) it is indeed FORTUITOUS that this is the case. The only (so-called) philosophers who seem to have any perceptible influence in the public arena are “pop” or “armchair” philosophers, such as Mrs. Alisa “Alice” O’Connor (known more popularly by her pen name, Ayn Rand), almost definitely due to the fact that they have published well-liked books and/or promulgate their ideas in the mass media, especially on the World Wide Web.

I am not sure to which extent listening to Nick, or reading his books, is informative. He just seems to speak words. I am genuinely surprised how a super-bright and super-qualified guy like he can say basically nothing.
I know Nick has made some comments in the past that proved very controversial to say the least, i think he shouldn't be given to much light on the public scene; he might have had some very racial views over the human biology. You should have inquire this subject also, doctor! With diplomacy, but you should have done it.

We have no obligation to investigate someone’s history based on some random’s baseless accusations or suspicions, especially when the accuser qualifies said accusations as speculative (“maybe, “might”, etc.) and especially when the accuser advocates limiting the public’s access to information based on the accuser’s personal views, biases, and subjective moral/ethical beliefs, and especially when those beliefs of the accuser do not account for the foolishness and the dangers of doing so paired with an ignorant compulsion to advocate doing so.

I really don’t see what the point of talking to this guy is any longer. He has some interesting theories, but nothing revolutionary. And if you can’t get an opinion, out of him what good Is he?
This man clearly has never heard of politics & knows either less than nothing about history, or basic facts about industrialization so far. The technology to provide ample nutrition to all has been around since the 1850s-70s. The technology & resources to do much more has been around for a while. Yet 46% of humans as of '24 lack clean water or public sanitation or both. Technology has not & will never bring about prosperity for a giant % of humans because people & the machines people control will ensure that it does not.
